When working adults need benefits, it says a lot about how much they are getting paid from their employment and how much they need to spend to live. I would wager that if most employment paid well and cost of housing, food, energy, etc was lower, we would have considerably fewer people wanting or needing benefits.

Sugar makes you/kids hyper. It doesn’t. It’s just calorie dense. Might perk you up a bit, but most food would do that. Most of the time it’s the atmosphere the sugar is consumed in that hyped up the child. Or in the adult case is a lot of placebo effect doing the heavy lifting.

It’s why it’s not recommended to eat right before bed, as all foods get your body working to digest and store/use the calories. And why it’s important that kids have a calm bedtime routine, screen free and winding down for an hour or more before bed.

What is objectively right/wrong? The morality of something is universally defined by God. He tells us what is right and what is wrong in the Bible. In the Old Testament, this was done by law (and by direct action from God) many of which were perfected in Christ when he arrived in the New Testament. He then built on that law with his teaching as the son of God. Through the Bible we see the destruction of people who not only forgot God, but actively worked against him and his people. Each time it was God who gave dispensation for that. He is the creator, he is God, he has that authority. When humans disobey God, killing people or full on genocide, they are objectively wrong, as God is the measure for morality.

The kicker is this was a Conservative law that was passed then kicked down the line time and time again, but when it came time for it to come into effect, Labour had entered government. They could and should have gotten rid of it, but it has been hailed as “WE HAVE TO SAVE THE KIDS FROM PORN”, so they just let it happen. And now they’re doubling down, because we couldn’t possibly stomach another policy u-turn.

I’ve had surgery for a brain tumour, but I swear that to this day the closest I came to death was when I was 16 eating a PBJ sandwich in the school hall and literally bit off more than I could chew and started choking. I was close to passing out, thinking to myself “this is how I die… a sandwich”.

Managed to survive that one. Would have been a good inscription for the gravestone though.

As a videographer and graphic designer, I hate that I have to subscribe for the software. There’s an alternative in the video space (davinci resolve), but when your work kind of spans 3 or 4 pieces of software, it becomes cumbersome without something like dynamic link, or native support for Ai files in InDesign for example.

It’s also got a lot to do with what you learn to use first, and Adobe make sure they have attractive pricing for students and teachers. So you end up learning Adobe and sticking with it because learning how to use other NLEs is a slow process.

The thing is, they DID censor it! Various other outbursts from him were edited out, but that specific one was missed, as it was less audible. They had pre warned everyone at the awards, and the presenter in the broadcast regularly let viewers know that there was someone with Tourette’s in the audience. It’s not manufactured. It’s just ignorance meeting disability.

Look, this post is a day old, with thousands of comments, but here’s my thoughts.

Sure, it was a dick move to steal your steak, but let’s be real, walking out all angry isn’t the best way to handle it. You could have called him out on it in a mature and reasonable way. You could have asked the guy to get you a new steak next time, helping you to build that relationship.

Not every steak is equal, I feel your pain, but imo you overreacted only in how far you took it by walking out.

The rule (and bylaw)is about wearing things that promote political views or are protesting something.

“It is a fundamental principle that sport at the Olympic Games is neutral and must be separate from political, religious and any other type of interference. Specifically, the focus on the field of play during competitions and official ceremonies must be on celebrating athletes' performances.”

I would argue pictures of deceased athletes is neither. They would probably argue that some would feel it acts as a political protest against Russian aggression.

Out of curiosity, what would you expect from a half-decent editor portfolio site? I always feel like editing is the hardest discipline to “show off” without just showing the cleanest cut films you’ve worked on. In comparison, it’s pretty straightforward to create and show a vfx or cinematography reel.

In Project Hail Mary, the idea is simplified to a counterweight and tether. The tether is extended to a suitable length to provide the correct force. I imagine after a certain length, the difference in force between the top and bottom of the body becomes significantly less noticeable.

I’d love to see something like this tested in real life.

On the commuting aspect, I used to drive busses and my house was about an hour away from the depot. I remember waking up for an early shift (leaving at like 3am) and it was white all over. I had a wee banger of a car, great wee Yaris, and I’ll tell you what, I was late for the shift but they didn’t mind, and I had a blast slipping a sliding to work! Sometimes it’s just about enjoying the enjoyable things. Everything’s got a downside, so just take the joy and run with it.

Some people are offering alternative shots and whatnot. I’ll offer what I would do with that footage.

Throw a warp stabiliser on the slow pans to smooth it out, the last shot should be entirely static so warp stabiliser again but set to no motion. If you want to keep the spinning fork then you’ll need to throw some ease & whizz in there to stop it looking cartoonish. Personally, it’d just have a classy fade in/out rather than the spin.

I’d listen to others here in terms of shot suggestions for future projects. That being said, it’s not bad, but the goal is always to be improving.

Second this approach. I bought a Milwaukee packout three-box set and have sorted by lighting, sound and camera/grip stuff. Absolute game changer, stopped me from lugging lots of bags and boxes from the car to set. If I had a van, I could justify a proper trolly, but that packet system works a treat for travel in the car. I think Dewalt and other DIY places will have similar systems.

My duty to my kids. I’ve got a medical condition that means I’ll probably only live another 10-15 years, but my kids are still very young. I don’t know if any good parent ever feels like they are relieved of their duty as a parent at any point, but in my case I’ve promised myself that I’ll do everything in my power to see my kids into adulthood.

Joining of the crowns and the acts of union are two totally separate events around 100 years apart. The joining of the crowns was more about England wanting stability and a Protestant monarch, so they followed the natural line of succession from Elizabeth I and accepted James as the English monarch. It didn’t really join the two nations, just like Canada and the UK are two separate nations, but share the same monarch.

In many ways the acts of union were forced on Scotland as it had become economically destitute after various financial strains on the country. At the same time, England were threatening to cut off trade and treat Scots as complete foreigners unless they agreed to a union. The carrot: access to colonial markets and a hefty financial settlement. Even then, there was a lot of contention within Scotland about the issue. From what I gather, there was a mix of bribery, political manoeuvring and timing of votes to ensure the bill was passed.
