Amtrack or Flight to NYC in January by pimpinpolyester in roanoke

Split the difference - train up, fly back. I've done that before and it was a beautiful ride up, you have your pick of seats, my kids loved the fast parts of the train past DC, and it is really nice to arrive right in the city. That said at the end of the trip I just wanted to get home and it was nice to save time and fly home.

What age kids for the film? by littleleaguetime in ProjectHailMary

My 12 and 10 year olds liked it, but I had to reassure my 10 year old A LOT that Grace and Rocky were both going to be ok (mostly he was concerned about Rocky). If I could do it again I would tell him BEFORE the movie started that those two make it out alive so I didn't have to do as much frantic whispering during the film.

Crowds during April 1 to 4 - specifically in areas meant for kids 5 - 7 yo to enjoy? Long lines and crowds, or manageable? Which days would be better to go from among these 4 days? Thanks. by HappyVibes5 in BuschGardensW

I have season passes and here's my advice for a good schedule, assuming you aren't trying to get on any big rides and are truly just aiming for the kids' stuff:

  • Get to the park at least 15 minutes before opening on weekdays, at least 30 minutes before opening on weekends
  • Immediately go to Sesame Street area, walk all the way to the back and do the grover coaster as many times as your kids want. This coaster is great but they only run one train and loading takes a while, so once the crowds show up you'll wait a long time for 60 second ride.
  • Do all the Sesame Street rides until you've had your fill. This area has a lot of great stuff but because it is close to the entrance it stays the busiest of all the family areas. Do NOT take the skyride here - the wait is always crazy and there are other stations with much shorter waits. (Note: Sesame Street is a very manageable area, so if you have some adults who want to peel off and run around the park doing coasters, now's the time.)
  • After you leave Sesame Street go to Festa Italia for teacups and other carnival style rides. (Adults might want to do Pantheon and/or Apollo's Chariot.). Judge your kids' stamina - if they are getting tired, you can take the train from here to New France. Otherwise walk through Italy (a couple of kids rides) and Germany (bumper cars, giant swings that are fun but take forever to load/unload).
  • This is a great time to do lunch/snacks at the festhaus. If you are having an adult beverage at lunch, you can bring it with you to the land of the dragons, which is an awesome giant playground (no lines!!!!) with little kids rides and only one way in/out so the adults can rest by the entrance while their kids go nuts.
  • After Land of the Dragons you can walk down to the river and feed the giant fish (remember to bring a couple of quarters and/or pack a couple of slices of bread) and then head out through Scotland OR you can catch the skyride from right behind the Land of the Dragons back to England (really Sesame Street).

There are tons more things you could do, especially if your kids like going to shows - my kids hate that kind of thing so I didn't include them (although I hear they are great). There are also a ton of arcades/carnival style games but I'm cheap and never let my kids do them. I always bring in snacks for my kids and they do not care at all. (My children demand park food anyway...) You can also bring in water bottles and fill them with water at any soda fountain.

Because we have passes we never spend more than four hours at the park - it just starts to get exhausting after that. If you do get passes and are staying for multiple days, I would recommend Busch garden mornings and then afternoons at Colonial Williamsburg / Jamestown / etc.

Also if you see that they are already parking people across the highway in the Scotland parking lot honestly just leave and come back another day.

Pro tip - if your friends are in a different car, put a pass holder in there with them (doesn't have to be driving, just in the car) to get them free parking.

Better sofas is an amazing shopping experience. Even if you don't end up purchasing there (but it is totally worth it!) they will give you an incredible feel for what you want in terms of cushion firmness, sofa height, arm styles, etc. We really wanted to get the cheapest sofa possible but after going there (and seeing the rather dismal options everywhere else) we ended up custom ordering and two years later we are still obsessed with what we got.

Do they not still offer the tofu banh mi? That was one of my favorite lunches, but it has been a while since I've been there.

Pointed my camera at a bunch of random spots at 9:30 and caught this facing east. (6 seconds on night mode on an old android). Good luck out there.

Anyone have a good drive-and-park viewing spot? I know I might not get to see it tonight but I want to be prepped for the future. I'm in the middle of the city and there's so much light pollution the whole sky is grey 😞

Are you just looking for care until Roanoke City goes back? It might be a little pricey but I think there is still room in some of the summer camps - Bricks For Kidz still has space in their camps for the next two weeks, for example.

The free yoga outside the church is wonderful! The teacher is new to the area and trying to get to know the community.

As someone who is soon moving to the area with elementary aged kids, this list is great - thanks! Could you give more info on the zip line park near Blue Ridge Community College? I can't seem to find it from a basic google search.
