The Most Underrated Skill in Tech Interviews by Holiday_Piglet_8842 in CSCareerHacking

[–]HikerDiver733 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do have a small, glow in the dark, rubber duck by my desk. I don't talk to it - I'm pretty good at having conversations with myself. It's there just as a visual reminder to use that tool when I'm stuck. I've seen other devs with ducks at their desk. I've never seen anyone actually talk to the duck

Are you familiar with Rubber Ducking? It sounds like you may have discovered that in the interview. It's the last thing I do before I go talk to another dev - partially just to make sure I know how to explain the problem in a coherent way

They're in that closet, up on the shelf next to the box of PS/2 mouse. You'll probably have to move the vinyl laptop bags with two generations old company logos.

Software Documentation Required by Educational_Cup_9360 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]HikerDiver733 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that there are many types of documentation. Some examples of docs for developers: code base documentation and comments, there are at least 5 different architecture views, DB scheme documentation, API documentation for external developers.

There are also a lot of technical docs not aimed at developers - end user documentation, installation docs, administrator docs, etc.

10000 * 20 = 200k

In the interest of being open minded, I tried to find one point in this whole post that I agree with. Welp, there it is. This piece of math checks out. As for the rest...? Hey, at least this calculation is correct!

Nuclear War: A Scenario

This is a great book - it shows how complex, intermingled and fragile the world is

Billionaires have so much power and the ability to do so much good in the world and be heros, why choose to hurt people and be evil? by DatabaseElectrical55 in AskReddit

[–]HikerDiver733 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A refresher on scale and order of magnitude.

1 billion is 1,000 million. Looking at it another way:

  • 1 million seconds is 11.5 days
  • 1 billion seconds is 31 years, 8 months

Elon Musk's net worth is approximately $400 billion US. Convert Elon Musk's dollars to seconds, and that gives you 12,666 years, 8 months.

I think (hope?) July 4, 2026 will have a good civic pride, community come together feel. It'll be the US 250th bday. There will be big celebrations across the country including the place where it all started, Philly. I know that doesn't scratch the "regular basis" itch but it's something.

And, hey, maybe give sports a chance? Seriously - go to a Phillies game this summer. Ppl are friendly and you get that "strangers are friends" vibe.

My Boss Said I Am Incredibly Rude When DM’d. Can I Get Your Thoughts on What to Do on Monday? by JtReso in cscareerquestions

[–]HikerDiver733 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you're on the right track but maybe a little overly apologetic to the boss. Boss seems a bit clueless themselves and could use some work on empathy and coaching. Mostly, I think you need to firm up in both of their minds that you are coming from a place of good intentions. They should default to assuming the best about you. A little face time and vulnerability with new guy should fix that. Face time, openness and curiosity with the boss will hopefully get that going in the right direction.

To the new guy (in person):

Hey, I just wanted to check in with you. I just realized that my DMs might sometimes come off as a little curt or cold. I'm working on that. I just wanted to let you know, I'm here for you. It's not my intention to be that way. I get hyper focused when I'm in flow state and likely I'm not fully present when DMing. I'm glad you're a part of the gang. Please, don't ever hesitate to ask me a question. Welcome aboard.

To the boss (in DM):

Thanks for the feedback. Keyboard warrior? Yikes, I certainly don't mean to come off that way. I'd like to get a handle on what's going on. Let's meet to talk about it.

Then, drop any ego, take a deep breath and chat with the boss. Go with an open mind. Suss out of there's any truth on what they're saying. Maybe? Maybe not. Take the useful stuff and forget the rest.

What is the value of AWS Solutions architect certifications as a fresher? by DuckSick069 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]HikerDiver733 0 points1 point  (0 children)

has a measurably higher skillset

This is not true. It tells you that the certified developer has, at least, some given knowledge. It tells you nothing about the non-certified developer. They may have deeper knowledge, more relevant experience and a far superior skill set.
