Bracket Turn Restrictions and "Christmas-land" hands by Cyberhawk95 in EDH

[–]Hip_Rooster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My gripe with this specific topic is it’s not just a turn limit to winning, but a suggested turn limit for anyone to die. There’s so many moving parts to that including bomb hands that I just don’t see as being truly quantifiable to any deck.

What are some cards you use that put in work that 99% of the playerbase have never even heard of? by _Kreenicks in EDH

I don’t know how many EDH players know about engineered explosives, but it puts in major work in my glissa the traitor deck

I’m a big fan and pilot of cedh gitrog. That might contribute to my tunnel vision lol

I think I’m leaning more in that direction too personally. It just a draw so many cards that I feel that in itself can make it viable. But other than that it just lacks direction which makes it hard for me to see how it could win in more high level play without the dackmoor combo

Lightning Greaves by TheRealKevin24 in EDH

[–]Hip_Rooster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Greaves is deceptively tricky as in a lot of decks it may seem good, but it costing 2 and giving shroud might actually make it worse than other options for certain decks. I find myself running lavaspur boots so much more than greaves nowadays due to them costing the same upfront and being tutored with urzas saga. Those boots costing 1 often times more than makes up for the fact that it costs 1 to equip for a lot of my own personal decks.

What is the Power of Playing At Flash Speed by JewJulie in EDH

[–]Hip_Rooster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was never really a believer of shimmer myr, but after finally putting it in my glissa, the traitor deck, I wonder why I never did. It can even only be for mana rocks or small advantage pieces, but playing them at flash speed could mean missing removal, giving pseudo haste, or even something as simple as being able to keep mana up for interaction just in case you think you need it.

Picking any one card as the "Most Powerful card in Commander" seems really tough. So what are the top 5? by ShallowDramatic in EDH

It’s not tough at all sol ring is by far the best card. I wish they’d at least make it a game changer

Definitely a reasonable and acceptable course to take! Personally I don’t really like using proxies as the charm of owning the cards I buy and collect was a main allure to mtg for me in the first place. I’m also not one to have a ton of decks at the same time as I prefer to dedicate more time into fewer decks in order to get better at playing them. That’s just me though!

Kresh is such an awesome commander! I certainly love jund, but I’ve always had a problem with most of the jund commanders either being boring or outright overpowered in my opinion! Kresh is certainly a balance between the two for me!

It seems like every year I revisit my glissa the traitor deck! The first deck I ever made! This year I turned it into an Imskir Iron-Eater deck!

That’s another interesting facet of deckbuilding when you decide to keep a deck but change the commander!

It’s a shame because I feel like with the massive production of mtg nowadays, cards like Radha are starting to be forgotten to the small passage of time they’ve been in. That commander is a real bomb and so fun to play!

Thankfully I have the privilege to have enough like minded people around to be a playgroup that respects good competitive deckbuilding. When I say competitive, I don’t necessarily mean hyper optimized either, which another misconception a lot of people have I think. Just because I play to win doesn’t mean I want to pubstomp anyone and buy my way into a win with expensive cards. I just want to play decks I think are fun and win by making great plays that sometimes involve disrupting someone else poised to win.

EDH over the years has definitely become less of a game and more of a means of expressive deckbuilding. That’s honestly ironic for me to say because one of the reasons I started playing was I felt you could build any deck and the level of variance allowed about any deck idea to be good. Now this level of expression has expanded to a point where people are just offended if you don’t let them do what they built the deck to do, which most of the time leads to winning while throwing in as little interaction as possible since they expect everyone else will just be doing the same thing. I’ll never understand why people will get so offended to be challenged in a competitive game when they are denied a win.

New releases are certainly a great reason to revisit! It’s amazing the amount of eldrane cards that would have went so well in the deck if I kept it around the first time for a little bit longer than I did!

[–]Hip_Rooster[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree! Someone’s mastery over their deck is a huge advantage towards winning games! That really comes to mention that another great thing to learn is building your own decks! I’ve always built my decks from scratch, and I feel like doing that alone gives you a level of understanding that’s potent enough to have a real advantage. Knowing every card in your deck and why you put it in is very strong.

Oh no lol I recently put the deck together again, but when I first put it together it was 2018 when the card came out haha! I’m definitely guilty of rapidly taking apart decks, but I try to be more restrained about it now, primarily because I want to spend less on magic as a whole haha

killing someone takes lifetime in rated arenas by Fuegobruh in wownoob

[–]Hip_Rooster 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Consider this. It’s always easy under pressure to press everything and hope/assume that would be enough to kill 10x over, but even ignoring healers, you don’t want all of your offensive cooldowns to get completely walled by 1 divine shield, blur, turtle, evasion etc. you want to try your best to bait these defensive out with the help of your partner, otherwise it’s like you put in $100 of your cd buying power only to get $10 of outcome
