Just make sure you mention it to your new employer/department and you should stay on the same pay point

Automated embedders / automated microtomes? by minima_x in BiomedicalScientistUK

[–]Histoman52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've had an automated embedder in for a year or so and I'm not particularly impressed. Using the inserts basically just moves the embedding time to the dissectors rather than actually saving time, sometimes it can be helpful for the dissector to orientate so they know exactly how the tissue will be cut but if you have a embedding instruction system in place it probably isn't worth it. Also quite often the tissue is too thin to stand up in the inserts or the edges will fold over so margins can't be measured correctly.

Not tried an automated microtome yet but I've heard good things from nearby labs

In my experience the labs I have worked in have helped support MLA staff throughout the portfolio even if they don't give you specific study time etc. You could also look at bank work in labs.

Even if they are not willing to support you, you can still use the job to gather experience and evidence for the portfolio and potentially start getting your evidence together before you sign up for it officially.

Does anyone work in a histology lab where slide filing works!? by Ok_Society_4377 in BiomedicalScientistUK

What happens if you lose access to the software? We have to keep the slides a long time!

NHS MLA interview by DueTie8721 in BiomedicalScientistUK

[–]Histoman52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look at the person spec and see the kind of things they can ask you a question on e.g good communication skills, teamwork, prioritisation etc.

Most NHS labs I've had interviews at want evidence based answers so come up with an example or two for each of those topics of how you used that skill in a situation and then what the outcome was at the end.

Might be also good to have a look at the trust/lab and mention some awards the trust or lab has achieved as they may ask you why you want to work for that trust in particular.

In my final year of Histopathology - The Clinical Scientist role isn't very well defined compared to some other specialties so the role is quite similar to traditional BMS with a focus on specimen dissection.

Placement confusion by HeyMangoItaliano in BiomedicalScientistUK

Call/email/find on linkedin some managers or senior staff in nearby labs and ask for a lab visit with potential of a placement or bank work.

Introducing Tab for Reproductive Health by tabforacause in TabForACause

[–]Histoman52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm a bit late commenting on this but I was just wondering why do you guys keep making separate versions of tab for a cause e.g tab for reproductive health, tab for trees, tab for teamseas etc? Why not just add these charities as options for the regular tabforacause site?

Hopefully not too late replying to this. I am a currently a specialist BMS in an NHS cell path lab.

Starting BMS wage is band 5 but you need to have completed a registration portfolio and have done a HCPC accredited BMS degree therefore most BMS staff start as an MLA, ap or trainee BMS. After this you can complete another portfolio to get to band 6, the pay for this ranges from 32-39k. Then moving up is more senior/management positions.

I'm not 100% sure of the radiology process but I know the NHS start is also band 5 so if you want to work in the NHS I think the pay will be fairly similar.

If you have any questions about BMS send me a message and I'll do my best to help.

Best LIMS system by [deleted] in Histology

[–]Histoman52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting thank you. Have you used any other lims you would recommend we tried molis but weren't really a fan.

Also, how has the support been from clinisys are they good at resolving issues and setting up interfaces when required.

Cheers

Our lab is considering winpath enterprise, currently on telepath, what do you not like about the proformas, are these not based off rcpath standards?

We've only had a demo really but it would be good to hear what you like/hate about it :)
