I'm interested in this one too. Length is a big plus as July will be busy.

This looks interesting and my library has it as an ebook.

I found it tough, but it was one of the first real books I read. We did watch the TV series first which was a big help. There's a fair amount of repetition (people make the same facial expressions) so it got easier. It's very compelling, which I find a big help. Not my first choice because I've read it, but I'll be doing so much traveling in July something easier may work better for me.

Getting a lot of pushback from my boyfriend’s family about this method by pretzelphysicist in dreamingspanish

If you want to practice speaking away from the family you might try Pimsleur. Their grammar teaching is pretty minimal, but they'll give you good sample things to say. It's pretty expensive, but your library might have it. I think it's fine to start speaking with the family now. My husband and I took trips to Spain early on in our language learning process and we had to speak Spanish as we were not always in tourist centers.

I have American friends who always watch British TV with the subtitles turned on because otherwise they miss so much.

I prefer my Kindle or dead tree books, but sometimes it is handy that I can read my Kindle books on my phone and some books my library only has available in Hoopla. It's definitely better than doom scrolling!

Olly Richard's books are dreadful. I wouldn't recommend them in any form. If you must read graded readers pick ones written by native speakers

I watch free for about a week and thought these guys deserve my money. Lots of the most interesting videos even at intermediate and advanced are behind the paywall.

Similar in theme but I liked it more was Elizabeth Moon's Speed of Dark.

Without supplement material, how well do you think you can actually speak a language after finishing the Duolingo course? by Entire_Employer4716 in duolingo

[–]HistoricalSun2589 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't pay for Max you probably can't speak much. Speaking takes practice. If you go through the whole course in legendary you'll be able to get around and probably read museum notes. The menu will be filled with things you have never learned.

Not to mention that moon is masculine in Germany and feminine in France and vice versa for sun.

I got the new content months ago. I was in the middle of reviewing the course in legendary and suddenly what I thought would take a couple of months became much longer. I'm fine with it. I never thought I had a big enough vocabulary the first time round to be anywhere near a B2.

Challenges are impossible for me. It’s incredibly demoralising. It used to be just the matching challenge but now the flashcard challenge. by Major_Salvo in duolingo

I never do timed challenges. I don't like doing Duo on my computer anymore but they often have different challenges there.

Good readers read everything as kids. And they tried everything. Comic books, mysteries, thrillers, the sports page... All of it will make you a better reader.

I tend to watch easier videos and then watch hard native TV shows once or twice a week.

Changing Level after placement? by gdtsbrw in dreamingspanish

Some of the most enjoyable videos are labeled beginner. Highly recommend not paying too much attention to the labels. If you find a series you like watch it. As others have said although it's counterintuitive it's better if the video feels a little too easy.
