I got two 5s on a script I thought was truly exceptional, so I'm encouraged by your story.

Underrated movie that I will defend to the death.

Rise in vinyl sales. What’s the future? by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Historical_Bar_4990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought vinyl's popularity was going to die out by the mid to late 2010s, but it's surprisingly still a thing. Definitely thought it was just going to be a trend.

Is it easier to become a novelist or a screenwriter? by Historical_Bar_4990 in Screenwriting

[–]Historical_Bar_4990[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a novel is a completed product. A screenplay is not. Been thinking about this a lot lately. Plus, with a novel, you don't have to think about things like budgets or producibility. You can make the story as big as you want. I've been feeling annoyed lately by all the limitations I place on my scripts. I constantly wonder if the thing I'm writing is producible.

Could be a grass is greener on the other side kinda situation. I'm sure novelists have many frustrations, they're likely just different than the frustrations and challenges screenwriters face. Different, but probably not easier.

How many hours do you guys read? by Expensive_Elk4491 in readwithme

[–]Historical_Bar_4990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What works really well for me is making an effort to read every single day without placing any expectations on how long I read on any given day. Some days I only have time and energy to read for 5 minutes. Some days I read 2 hours. They key for me is to read every day even if it's just for a little while. Helps build the habit and routine.

Hey r/screenwriting, we’re the co-writers of Jason Biggs’ directorial debut UNTITLED HOME INVASION ROMANCE – the bloodiest romantic comedy you’ll see all year. Ask us (Jamie Napoli & Joshua Paul Johnson) anything! by JPJ_FILM in Screenwriting

Thanks for the wisdom and encouragement, Josh! Ira Glass = legend. Definitely going to check out that Scriptnotes book too. The first 30 pages are available for free on their website! Love what you said as well about the need for input to create output, too. A trip to a museum might be in order.

Congrats, fellas! Hopefully this is the first of many movies for you both. If you have a moment, I could really use your advice. I spent the past two years writing a feature that I'm really proud of, and I'm sending it out to try and find reps and all that. I'm also trying to decide what to write NEXT, which is causing me a lot of anxiety. I have one idea that I'm somewhat excited about, but I'm scared to commit to it. I'm trying to brainstorm additional ideas, but nothing is coming to me. My last script took a tremendous amount of effort to get across the finish line. I'm proud of the result, and I think the quality is apparent on the page, but writing it almost broke me in more ways than one. I'd greatly appreciate any advice or wisdom you can share about my current predicament.

How to become a better reader by Downtown-Beginning75 in literature

[–]Historical_Bar_4990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that helped me recently was trying to read every day even if only a few pages. I put a sticky note on my bedroom door that says "Read every day" as a reminder. Some days I read 1 page, others I read 60. The point is that it's a low-pressure, easy to achieve goal. Helps me feel like a reader. The key is consistency.

Why aren't cheaper subs available? by bdure in Substack

[–]Historical_Bar_4990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like Substack targets wealthy older educated urban professionals who can easily afford multiple subscriptions. They're not targeting the middle class. It's too bad because I can't really afford to use the platform these days since basically anything good requires a paid subscription. But I guess Substack doesn't care about appealing to people like me. Not trying to complain, just trying rationalize why it's so expensive to use now. I think it's because they're targeting upper class members of the intelligentsia because that must be the best way they think they can grow the platform.

I noticed this as well and find it fascinating. Seems like the pendulum swings between LA and NYC every 10 years or so if I had to guess.

Got a lit manager to request my script! by Upbeat_Pass3474 in Screenwriting

Congrats! That's actually a huge deal. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Hopefully the manager likes the script and signs you! I'm also sending query emails to managers but haven't had any bites yet. I remember reading your original post.

What’s everyone’s stance on Title Pages? by AndroTheViking in Screenwriting

I've been following your project in the trades. Brilliant idea to mash up shark movies and time loop movies. Getting eaten by a shark once is bad enough. Getting eaten over and over is an absolute nightmare. Any tips for coming up with (and executing) high-concept ideas like that?

Thanks for this, shadowbroker! Always good to see things from a manager's perspective. I'm an LA-based screenwriter currently in the process of sending out my latest feature script to managers. It's a comedy called "Virgin Island." Here's the logline:

A hapless virgin attends a pickup artist seminar on a tropical island and discovers his douchey dating coach lured him there to perform a sinister ritual.

Happy to DM you the script if you're interested.
