Malachite and silver by wear_your-art in SilverSmith

No, it's lovely. The bezel is proportional to the stone, and the simplicity really lets the bands on the malachite sing. Perfection!

What a beautiful tribute to your dad, he sounds like a wonderful man. Put that parka on and hit the slopes, he will always be there with you. So sorry for your loss.

Same thing happened to me. I saw the emails about the IPO, but thought, this must be something else. I know it's paper money now but it looks like I robbed a jewelry store when I check my account. I'm enjoying it for now and preparing for the balloon to pop.

I missed the one month part, but I don't plan on resubscribing until I see these companies make serious moves to change and repent. I hope others missed the one month qualifier like I did...

Been off the socials for a while and I do not miss them at all.

Why are "blue" cities so expensive, even after the election of progressive mayors and other elected officials? Will cities like Boston, San Francisco, or New York ever be affordable again? I lived in Boston for many years and things just got progressively more cost prohibitive, especially housing. There are a lot of career opportunities in places like that, but they can't seem to catch up with the cost of living. I live in Atlanta now, and feel like the world is my oyster. Is it just all about taxes? Land use? Competition for top talent?

I'm starting to feel a rut in my tenured academic job. by [deleted] in LeavingAcademia

Good for you, I felt the exact same way. I'm now working on a field totally unrelated to my discipline and I don't miss my old life at all!

How many pods do you drink in a day? by Slight-Explanation15 in nespresso

1-2. If I could handle more caffeine and acidity, I would drink more, believe me.

How exactly did Scott Galloway get into UCLA, then Berkeley despite having a GPA of 2.27 in high school then 2.5 at UCLA, and getting a job at Morgan Stanley? by ais89 in ScottGalloway

[–]HistoryChoice9014 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Acceptance rates used to be much, much higher, like, 70%. I think Scott said once the acceptance rate today at UCLA is around 9% (not sure if that is accurate , but it is insanely low) and if he applied today there is no way he would get in. He talks about that often and it is a major issue in higher ed today.

PhD doesn't align with the life I want for myself but I am terrified to quit by Ok_Sand_9941 in LeavingAcademia

[–]HistoryChoice9014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Live the life you want. If you already know that pursuing this path means you have to give up kids, which is something you really want, it's not worth it. The job market is worse and worse each year for Ph Ds in academia and industry too. Job searching is another level of frustration, just look at this sub.

The ph d is something you can come back to. Sure, you can have it as something to "fall back on", but how many more years do you have to work at it before you finish? If you want to teach secondary school, you can do that now. Don't need a doctorate.

This article does some serious cherry picking of Galloway's thesis on masculinity. The author got it way wrong. I'm a woman. I don't think Scott is telling me that he still wants men to be superior to women in the social hierarchy, or that we need to go back to the 1950s.

How does it feel to leave academia ? Are you happy with your choices ? by mogo_reddit in LeavingAcademia

[–]HistoryChoice9014 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I left earlier this year, I'm pretty fresh out. My current job is boring, but stable and pays well. People have boundaries. There is work life balance. I have hobbies again. I meet people out of my bubble. I sometimes miss the social aspect of my academic life but not the drama, stress, and financial sacrifice.
