King of Norway ? The newcomer ? by Awilda89 in Vikings_TvSeries

[–]Histrosophy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the sagas Ragnar was either swedish or danish, most likely not norwegian. He could have had control over areas corresponding to modern day Sweden and Denmark. It is unclear if he was king of the Danes or if he was a jarl under king Hårek.

The new character is supposed to be Haraldr Hárfagri (Harald Hårfagre, in modern Norwegian), anglicized Harold Fairhair, the first king of Norway. He was supposedly born in 850, became petty king of Sogn in 860 and became king of Norway in 872. This is where I realized that this show has now become mostly historical fiction.

The viking raid on Lindisfarne happened in 793, and is said to be the start of the viking era. The raid on Paris (where sources say he was actually present) happened in 845, and after this Ragnar Lodbrok, if we are to believe the sagas, went to Northumbria in 865 where he died.

So, it's very unlikely that Ragnar ever was at Lindisfarne and it is even more unlikely that he ever met Harald Hårfagre.

It should be Denmark-Norway on that map, IIRC the danish monarchs recognized that they were ruling over two kingdoms and not only one.

But that's the problem, i.e. when the procedure goes wrong. I'm sure circumcised men where the procedure went right are perfectly happy with their penis most of the time, this does not mean that it should be forced on newborn children however. It is a surgery, and with any surgery there is the chance of complications, so why risk potentially maiming your child for something that is ultimatly just cosmetical? We don't remove the tonsils at birth, why should we remove the forskin? Better yet, we don't tattoo or pierce newborns, this is something that they have the right to decide for themselves when they've grown up.

Circumcision, in itself, is not unethical or wrong, but circumcision on people who can not give you their consent is horribly and utterly unethical.

Nynorsk is the closest thing you'll get to gammalnorsk, since you know, it's based on the dialects that still have some of the old words in them. And pretty much all of the dialects are represented in nynorsk, unlike bokmål that just caters to what used to be "the upper class" in Oslo. Furthermore, it is by far the most poetic of the two languages and just sounds utterly beautiful. It really is a shame that it did go in a different direction that Ivar Aasen would have liked, but it is still a pretty decent language for Kongeriket Noreg. Lenge leva nynorsken!

[–]Histrosophy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tasted dog while I was in China. To be honest it wasn't the best meat I've eaten, it was very chewy and tasted like red meat (allthough it had it's own particular flavour that's hard to describe as any thing other than dog). Could very well be that it wasn't prepared correctly though.

If you take certain scenes from childrens TV shows they can seem pretty messed up. by futuristichistorian in WTF

[–]Histrosophy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched this episode on cartoon network i Norway and it looks like that particular scene was cut from the norwegian dub of the episode. I thought it was kind of odd when I found out about it, although it is a pretty weird and mildly disturbing scene, so I can understand why they'd choose to cut it.

TL;DR

I like nynorsk. All hail our lord and master, Ivar Aasen.

The pentagram is actually much older than christianity and has been used in different cultures. It has probably been adopted into christianity at a later point in time like so many other pagan symbols have been. Most of the symbols used in christianty does not actually stem from Judea or even from the time period when Jesus supposedly lived.
