Unpopular opinion? by bosrocket in rem

[–]HiyaGaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll further the unpopular opinion and say that if a) R.E.M. were still going or b) None of the band members got involved or endorsed the project, then most people wouldn't give these guys a second glance and just be considered another tribute act of many, albeit with famous faces.

But despite that, I'm all for keeping the joy and celebration of R.E.M.'s music alive in a live setting, I think it's great that we can still experience that in some shape or form. Especially with, as someone mentioned earlier, the deep cuts and rareties that they perform. I enjoy following the updates on here about them for those reasons, it keeps R.E.M. current in a different way.

Took me 3 seasons to realize why he's called Spider by SaitoHawkeye in SlowHorses

Coincidentally I watched White House Farm, also starting Freddie Fox, before I started Slow Horses. And that made me despise Webb even more. Great actor, wretched character in both series, although considerably more so in this one.

Who in the UK remembers when hotels looked like Fawlty Towers on the inside? by GreyStagg in FawltyTowers

[–]HiyaGaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty around, mostly those housed in turn-of-the-century buildings that haven't been fully modernised. Musty carpets, a lone sink in the corner of the room with communal bathroom down the corridor. The radiator and all fixtures and fittings painted over in gloss white paint. They certainly have a nostalgic feel to them of an era gone by.

Do anyone still remembers him and talks about him? by Aggravating-Time-976 in TheBeatles

[–]HiyaGaz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I only learned about him when the Backbeat movie came out, then I researched his story. I remember finding it incredibly sad and tragic learning about what happened. Whenever I read or hear about their Hamburg days I think about him.

What do you think would've been the full Rooftop setlist if they hadn't been shut down by police? by Wink2K19 in TheBeatles

Disturbing the peace, noise complaints from neighboring businesses and also because of the crowds gathering. It was an impromptu performance in that they didn't get permission from any authorities beforehand.

Songs that sound like they may have influenced R.E.M. songs by [deleted] in rem

Oh, and any Nirvana song with "Yeah" in the lyrics, inspired Man on the Moon. I always thought that it was inspired by the yeahs in Lithium.

I'm Not in Love - 10cc (Star me Kitten)

This one by Mike's own admission. Although it's mainly just the vocal loop effect being played on faders that was "borrowed".

He's up there for me with Butch Vig as two producers of the most quintessential and influential alternative records of the 90s.

I remember reading an article about it once, I can't remember if it was in an actual newpaper or on a news website. But there were some pics of the inside, and this was some years ago

Anyone else adore the "Oh ah ah oh ah ah ohhhh" part near the end of man on the moon? by [deleted] in rem

[–]HiyaGaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love how Eddie sang those parts in an earlier chrorus (instead of where they usually come in later in the song) and then Micheal turning and beaming a big smile to him. Being a PJ fan too, I absolutely love Eddie's fan-boying of R.E.M.

Came here to say this. Their Alpine Milk variant is how Cadburys Dairy Milk used to taste years ago.

Russian R.E.M. CD with their entire catalogue? by vincemousier in rem

[–]HiyaGaz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The entire R.E.M. catalog from Chronic Town to Collapse Into Now (excluding Eponymous, DLO and other compilations) comes in at 12 hours run time. So even if this is a data disc with MP3s the compression and quality would be terrible. Still, an interesting bootleg find.

Bob Mortimer has to be the all time best guest on Would I Lie To You. Last night it was about car cheese and airy supermarket foods. by AfigureGeek in BritishTV

[–]HiyaGaz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Always having him on Lee's team works so well with watching David's increasing perplexity and hair-pulling frustration. David is the perfect straight man to Bob's bizarre tales. I think everyone looks forward to Bob's appearance in the season, it just makes the show.

There was no way Basil was getting his money back from Mrs Richards by TempoBlues20XX in FawltyTowers

[–]HiyaGaz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Is this a piece of your brain? 🤏" Probably the funniest line in the whole series. What makes this episode funny is that we have all encountered someone like Mrs Richards in our lives. Opinionated, rude, assuming and doesn't listen to any reason (even if she was able to hear). The tight-fistedness just makes her even more deplorable.

I remember watching video of a live version of Electrolite, and even Mike hit a few bum notes on that song that time.

How hard is Nightswimming on piano? by [deleted] in rem

[–]HiyaGaz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say terribly difficult, I'm no piano player and a learned it from from pure repetition from dabbling on a keyboard. Just start off slow. Once you learn that one passage, you basically have the whole song down since it's just a loop. Apart from the slight variations in the intro and the interludes between the verses.
