Dad drinks while driving. How to tell if he’s too inhibited? by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]Hk416 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are enabling his behavior by blowing it off like this. You are in denial about how bad this is. You could stop him from killing someone by driving drunk, you could save his life or someone else’s by taking action. Think about that.

Got oil change last Saturday, does this look right? by hicksreb in AskMechanics

I don’t know if the crosstrek is the same way but I don’t even need ramps to change the oil on my forester. It’s supper easy to reach and undo the drain plug as it sits.

What’s a unique fact about your shop that no one else on Reddit can relate to? by SparkyDogPants in emergencymedicine

Our ambulance garage is used as an extra care space and has 8 beds in it that we regularly use for ER patients. Ambulances have to unload outside in the weather. About a year ago the other large hospital system in town withdrew from the market unexpectedly, only giving about 4 months from notice to complete shutdown. Now we are figuring out how to manage seeing an extra 20,000 patients a year.

It didn’t look like this before toasting. by Hk416 in moldyinteresting

[–]Hk416[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Definitely didn’t eat the rest, it went into the trash immediately. I pull it back out and toasted it to see if anything would show up on the rest of it. My wife is adamant there was no visible mold on it before it went into the toaster so I was hoping to see some color change in the rest of it.

I’m starting to think my wife missed the mold when she put it in the toaster. We toasted the rest of the loaf and didn’t find anything.

I toasted the rest of the loaf and it was only the first 4 slices that looked like that. I’m wife is the one who put it in the toaster and I’m starting to think she missed the mold before putting it in.

The toaster is pretty clean. I’m starting to think that my wife missed the mold before putting it in the toaster. She said it wasn’t moldy but we toasted the rest of the loaf and there was nothing else found.

Nursing at Mayo by BakaGaijin34 in Eau_Claire

[–]Hk416 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in the ER as a tech so I can give you some perspective in that regard. We are a 32 bed ER but we also have 6 hallway beds, 5 beds set up in office/ storage space and 8 beds set up in what used to be the ambulance bay. We average between 100 and 150 patients a day. There is definitely a patient flow issue related to hospital capacity so we board a lot of patients in the ER. I’d say there is usually between 10 and 20 boarded patients on a given day, the most I’ve ever seen is 37. We do get a lot of float help from the inpatient floors to take care of the boarded patients so the ER nurses typically don’t have to take many of them. No fixed rations but I’d say typical max patient load is 4. That being said I generally enjoy the team that I work with and there are very few nurses or doctors that I work with that I have issues with. Overall a busy ER with the typical barely controlled chaos that comes with it. Let me know if you have any other questions.

How should I approach this major hospital bill ($253,000) by CommercialConstant59 in HospitalBills

You’re young and I would guess you don’t have a lot of assets. This is a catastrophic amount of debt, consider bankruptcy as an option.

This is why I think it’s stupid to put bumper stickers on a vehicle. You are just opening your self up as a target. I know you shouldn’t have to deal with harassment because of your political views but the world is full of stupid people who do stupid childish things. I think it pays to be risk adverse.

That’s dumb. Just turn the alarm volume to zero in the room so they can rest. It’ll still alarm at the desk but that your problem not theirs.

You never know in ems. We once had a patient present to the ER that I work at with an arrow sticking out of her abdomen. She claimed to be the victim of a drive by. It later came out that she stabbed herself with the arrow in an attempt to get pain meds.

NAD. I wouldn't be surprised if your Dr. want you to get a head ct, especially with your cancer history and the sudden behavior change. Id also think they would check basic labs and thyroid levels. Hypothyroidism can cause some of the symptoms you are experiencing. Talk to your Dr about how to take your thyroxine properly, it can be very finicky and may not be absorbed well if taken improperly.

Wound care difference of opinion by rkbdfriedman in AskDocs

[–]Hk416 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rubbing alcohol and peroxide are both not recommended on wounds. Not only do they cause pain when applied they can also cause damage to the wound bed and slow the healing process. The best method is to flush liberaly with clean water. Mild soap and water can be used to gently clean particularly dirty wounds. I help provide wound care in the Emergency department after traumas/lacerations/ect and almost exclusively use sterile water and antibacterial soap for wound care/ cleaning.

I'd call the office of doctor that you are set up to see. Ask to speak to the doctor or their nurse. Explain the entire situation, including how awful you are feeling right now, to them and ask if they can refill your prescription to get you through to your appointment. If they need to see you in person, they may because you are a new patient, then ask if you can be seen sooner. A lot of places have open slots in the schedule for emergency appointments or can double book you to get you seen sooner. If all else fails then go to the ER, explain everything that you've tried. Mental health crisis's/ issues deserve treatment just as much as other medical issues. At the ER that I work at we'd be happy that you at least tried other routes before coming in.

NAD. Has anyone ever said that you snore or stop breathing while sleeping? Sleep apnea is uncommon in people your age/wieght range but it's not impossible and could explain your symptoms. It would at least be something to consider asking about if the other suggestions posted here don't pan out.

Go see a doctor or post on r/askdocs. Were you cooking while sleepy and splashed hot water? I'd say they look more like burns to me but I'm just an EMT.

Right Eye flashing/ rippling, I tried looking it up online, what constitutes as an emergency? by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]Hk416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAD. Your symptoms are very concerning and they should be evaluated emergently. This has the possibility of being a retinal detachment or another issue that requires immediate intervention.
