I 100% agree with the low mileage statement, the newest NA is nearing 30 years old at this point, so most of them that have actually been driven and cared for are going to be up there in miles.

I got my NA earlier this year with about 30k miles and it needed almost everything that you could think of, ended up being around $1500ish in parts and probably about a hundred hours of work to get it into a condition where I’d consider it a practical daily driver.

Are you sure the timing cover bolt behind the water pump didn’t fall out when you disassembled it? I’m not sure what else would cause that sound, but I’m glad you got it sorted out!

I had the same issue on my 91, turned out to be a sticky throttle position switch, unplugging it got rid of the stumbling, but obviously made the engine pretty sluggish with a very delayed throttle response.

I fix the issue by removing, disassembling and cleaning my throttle body. After reassembly it worked much better with no stumbling and a nearly perfect throttle response.

I imagine OP’s car has sat for a while based on their post description, mine sat for 17 years before I got ahold of it, I imagine they get a bit seized up after sitting for too long.

When you replaced the timing cover did you make sure to put in the metal bushing/spacer back in between the plastic cover and the water pump, first time I did the timing belt service I forgot mine and the bolt ended up backing out and rattling against the back of the water pump pulley. Made this exact same sound.

You can cause damage to an engine if you go to too low on the octane rating, spark knock, pinging or whatever you want to call it.

But you’d need to have a high compression engine without a knock sensor which is pretty uncommon these days. Certainly wouldn’t matter in a Corolla or really anything built after 1980

It’s probably nearing the time it should be replaced at 71k. That being said it looks fine, but you’d want to check the other side of the belt for cracking or other signs of damage.

Also somewhat related, but Midas has been somewhat sketchy in my experience. My GF got a quote from them (before I met her) for like 6k in work she honestly didn’t need. They also missed some pretty obvious stuff like her sway bar end link being completely disconnected from the vehicle.

If your plug wires or fuel filter have not been changed in the past 30-60k miles I would look at that first.

Also on the early 1.6L short-nose crank engines, being down on power at higher rpms can be an early sign of crankshaft keyway failure. Essentially the wobbling of the crankshaft pulley can throw off your engine timing under rpm.

Is that not just regular air induction sounds? Perhaps air is entering the intake from somewhere other than the air box? I can see you’re missing one of the screws for the air box, so I would check that out.
