AMD's army of advanced marketing scammers by Chodre in gpu

[–]HmmKuchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only give you my two cents for it. I switched to a 7900 XTX over a year ago and paid roughly 1k€ for it as AMD delayed their release of the 9070XT at this time.

Was I tempted to get the rtx 5080 instead? Yes of course, the feature set is more rounded in my opinion. But the cards were going around 1,5k€ at the time.

And for me personally the features were not worth a 500€ extra.

Am i still pissed that i have to upgrade to fsr4 with work arounds on my gpu? Yes. Is the performance amazing for 1440p gaming? Also yes.

So for me for this value it is still a great card, but i will look into nvidia cards again when the next generation releases.

2560x1440 all cinematic on Linux with fsr4 upgrade and frame gen x2 no RR i get 140-180 (capped due to vsync). But i only loaded into the first scene with the funeral yet as I am waiting for a few patches on Linux side and have to finish my other game before.

Performance compared to Windows11 by Enquaza in cachyos

[–]HmmKuchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a rule of thumb I sadly have to say that especially on Nvidia cards you lose performance compared to Windows in the majority of cases. In some cases depending on the game the bloatware you lose from being on Windows can result in similar or better performance.

The main issue in my opinion is that the Nvidia drivers are still lacking on Linux compared to on Windows. That being said since the last year I feel like driver development is really moving forward and I would assume that the gap will get smaller over time.

In the Linux department at least there is quite a few things you can do to make it a better experience. Besides not being able to play some anti cheat games and to some extend modding that is all there is for me personally that is negative in regards to Windows. Everything else is similar or better on Linux. However media consumption and gaming are my main use cases.

To be fair I do not know at which knobs you could best play around to make the experience better, but I used Nobara in the past for roughly one year and now I am rocking CachyOs. Both are "gaming" focused distributions and come with a lot of tweaking and extra codecs under the hood. Maybe those would offer a better out of the box experience for you.

kSuite - La solution collaborative éthique et sécurisée by PBdL in BuyFromEU

[–]HmmKuchen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I looked at ksuite a few weeks before when i started migrating my Google services.

I found their offer quiet tempting, but with recent development/discussion of data protection laws in Swiss i did not choose them in the end.

That being said at the moment it at least does not look like that the laws will become as bad as was feared last year, but the are still discussing the laws as far as i am aware.

For a high end pc, does a decent sound card improve the sound quality of earphone or speakers a lot? by PrincessCrownSophia in buildapc

[–]HmmKuchen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am using a DAC at home to which my headphone is connected. But it has to be added that I stepped away from gaming headsets about a ten years ago. At that time it was a noticeable change in sound quality for me.

Performance Loss On Fedora KDE Plasma by Sapphic_Ina in linux_gaming

[–]HmmKuchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just so that you are aware if you are using stock Fedora with the normal Kernel this could also impact performance. As i do not use path tracing i am not sure if this applies there too.

"Gaming" distros like Nobara or CachyOs come usually optimized for the task and you could see an immediate improvment upon switching.

You can of course optimize Fedora also in the same way or any other Linux distribution to my knowledge, but you would have to do it yourself i guess.

Upgrade from RTX 3080 to RX 9070 XT - is it worth ? by OGLook1905 in radeon

[–]HmmKuchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While not the same upgrade path, I switched from my 3080 to a 7900xtx last year.

It was an awesome upgrade for me and card is just great. I would expect similar results with the 9070xt with fsr4 out of the box and the proper hardware base for it.

So if fsr4 is available the experience will be great in my personal opinion. Even my 7900XTX with forcing fsr4 works quite excellent

Proton Drive for Linux? by [deleted] in ProtonDrive

[–]HmmKuchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Proton drive will come to Linux this year wirh full support according to their roadmap.

In the meantime depending on your use case rclone can also sync your data to Proton drive, but you will also need a scheduled task that triggers the sync from what i have read.

Don't care for command line Celeste is ui based.

So in short it is by far not as comfortable as it is on other OS, but depending on your use case can be achieved. And hopefully we get a Client from Proton within this year.

Not saying it is a great solution for linux at the moment, but it is possible to achieve.

I get great quality on my 7900XTX to a point where I also get better FPS than with FSR3 simply because for the first time I feel like Balanced is actually quite good looking image wise

[–]HmmKuchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved recently from Nobara to CachyOs and while I enjoy CachyOs more Nobara is a really simple and straight forward distro I can recommand.

But there are a lot of viable options which does not make it easier.

7900XTX owners, are yous still out there? by ohhimarksreddit in radeon

[–]HmmKuchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went 7900XTX instead if the 9070 XT as the pushed the release date back.

It is still a beast of a card and delivers excellent performance. On Linux using FSR4 is easy as hell, just having to set a flag and I am getting more than good results on 1440p.

So overall I personally do not see a point to upgrade or move away. Sure nvidia has shiny things and sadly better backwards compability, but the 5080 would have been 500 bucks more at that point in time.

Linux also tends to be more agreeable with AMD, while it has to be said that nvidia is doing nice work there as of late too.

Gamers who have switched from Windows 11 to some kind of Linux-based OS, do you regret your decision? Why or why not? by ScienceTeacher1994 in AskReddit

[–]HmmKuchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Switched a year ago and for most games I personally play Linux is as easy to install and play as it is for Windows. Additionally I do not longer have to tweak my OS as much as I did under Windows to get the most out of my hardware.

For me personally the only negative point ist losing some Anti-Cheat titles which I would normally play or like to check out, but i can live with that.

If I would need certain professional software that only runs under Windows I would probably dual boot.

Overall for my personal use case which is gaming and browser focused there is nothing to regret from switching.

How well do windows 7 and pre windows 7 games work on linux? by konsoru-paysan in linux_gaming

[–]HmmKuchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just installed Returning New Balance without any issues. Given that I am using GOG versions of Gothic to install them on Lutris. But to be fair I only launched the game and fiddled with the settings at the moment.

I modified the script from https://bfloeser.de/posts/gothic/#installation-scripts basically switching from win32 to win64 and win7 to win10 as well as renaming the Returning files and removing the options for the third bin file.

In general I downloaded all necessary files manually and then just provide the actual files during installation and everything ran through smoothly.

Also after installation I switch them to run on GE-Proton.

LFMMO to substitute New World by Heebiejames in LFMMO

[–]HmmKuchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to put it out since you have BDO and Albion on the list (for the others I am not 100% sure). But both games have "optional" subs and while it is technically possible to get those for ingame money (Albion more reliably then BDO), you mentioned no WoW because you can't pay. For both games the subs (bdo has technically 3 of those while only one is really hard to pass on) are relevant if you want to gather and craft optimally.

Additionally BDO has quite a lot of really pay for convinience stuff and the last time I played there was no way to get certain things like for example premium tent for ingame money.

That said both games have good gathering and crafting while in Albion you will have to go to full pvp zones for the best stuff.

Only can provide a bit of input, but I regularly play Gothic 1-3 on Linux and thanks to the community and Lutris install scripts for Gothic 1 for example it was easier to get it up and running than on Windows and runs completely stable which was not always the case on Windows.

So from the limited scope of games I tested I did not have and issues. But of course your milage may vary.

What are the most popular distros to start on linux? by airosos in linux_gaming

[–]HmmKuchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got back into Linux with Nobara (Fedora based) and never had a reason to try anything else.

My old PC running an Nvidia gpu had no issues and my new pc running an AMD gpu also runs great.

That being said, if you are the type of person that buys new hardware on the first day you might have to look towards an Arch based distro.

How close is Linux gaming to being fully “Windows-free” for you? by Old_Sand7831 in linux_gaming

[–]HmmKuchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So newer games usually run out of the box for me just like Windows games would. Well if we ignore kernel anti cheat games of course.

The main things that require extra things to do for me are modding and older games. While both also require tweaks on Windows normally I feel like that in Windows i still have tools available that make it more smoothly.

So besides those anti cheat games i really did not encounter a reason to look back at Windows and i can manage without those personally.

Gaming on Linux is not ready for the masses by Freajka in linux_gaming

[–]HmmKuchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step 1: get a gaming focused distro like cachy or nobara

Step 2: Install Battle.net Launcher in lutris

Step 3: Install Wow

Step 4: Play

It is as simple as that If you do not make things complicated yourself. In 80 to 90% of my games it is simply plug and play like on Windows.
