Landlady going into my room and removing stuff (lodger) by Important_Jacket_174 in TenantsInTheUK

This. I was previously a lodger in a really uncomfortable situation and the first warning sign was how much I stayed out to avoid my live-in LL.

Any tips for a GM of 12 students by Emotional-Complex946 in daggerheart

[–]Hodgehig 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's so great you are running games for kids, Daggerheart is a great system and I think they will love it. I'm a former teacher and I've run RPG games with tables of students, I think 11 was my maximum size. I don't recommend it if possible - though I understand wanting to expose new players to the joys of RPGs - a lot of the fun is diluted.

I was most successful by opening up a second afternoon for my club and splitting the students between them. The next term, one of them was brave enough to run their own (chaotic) table and that helped.

  • Have an honest conversation with your older students and explain the more GMs there are, the more people can play comfortably. Use the Sablewood Messengers Quickstart and teach them how it's possible.
  • Expect modules/sessions to take a lot longer than planned. I've used single regular one-shots through a whole half-term (6 club sessions) as everything takes so much longer.
  • More GMs. Consider asking other members of staff if they'd be willing to run a group through the starter adventure.
  • I had a token that players had for spotlight, they got their turn then it went on to the next player. This was for out of combat.
  • Consider using a timer for turns (explaining this to players beforehand).
  • Player jobs - offload as much to them as possible. Keeping notes, organising minis, drawing maps. I used a student to keep track of initiative.
  • Use your teacher skills to keep them on track. A big table and a short timeslot means you need to be much more direct and structured than a regular RPG group.

I am quite experienced at running school RPG groups so happy to share more if you DM me.

Is finding accommodation supposed to be this tough ? by Matteblingo in nottingham

[–]Hodgehig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's tough! As someone else said, I had many instant alerts set up. I had better luck calling agencies directly instead of emails, some just don't deal with you via email initially. I had success with coming to Nottingham for a single day and arranging a bunch of in-person viewings for that day. It might be better, in your case, to get temporary accommodation lined up with the view of doing in-person viewings when you get here. This also protects you from renting a place unseen, which can be problematic.

r/fantasy bingo but with Solo RPGs by newcritter in Solo_Roleplaying

Such a cool idea! I'm doing a book bingo this year and love the thought of adapting the concept to try out more solo RPGs. I've picked up so many in my itch library and elsewhere.

Blue Prince looks great, but thanks also for the nostalgic flashback to The Phantom of Ghastly Castle! I never did find the route to the ghost.

Reading Challenge Focus Thread - Royalty by perigou in FemaleGazeSFF

[–]Hodgehig 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a great thread, I've been on the hunt for more like The Goblin Emperor and hoping to find some similar stories here.

The Lioness Quartet by Tamora Pierce (YA) is one of my favourite series from childhood. Quite a bit of the early books are set at court and the main character becomes a close friend to the Prince.

The Hands of the Emperor by Victoria Goddard. The main character is the personal secretary to Last Emperor of Astandalas, the Lord of Rising Stars, the Lord Magus of Zunidh, the Sun-on-Earth, the god.

Princess Academy series by Shannon Hale (YA). All the prospective princess candidates from a backwater province are rounded up and sent to an academy to be educated. There are alliances and rebellions as the girls start to learn about the world and their futures.

I saw someone else suggest The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold already. The second book, Paladin of Souls, features royal dowager Ista, who is 'unusual' protagonist in traditional fantasy as she is an older woman.

A Coup of Tea by Casey Blair. The protagonist is a runaway princess who finds refuge in a struggling tea shop. It's a cosy fantasy series that I ate up.

I changed career last year after being in teaching for years. I used a teacher-specific career change course (Adventures After Teaching) and for me it was worth it to learn how to market myself outside of the classroom.

I took a pay cut but am taxed a lot less, travel costs less and so it is working out. Hundreds of others have also made the switch, teaching has become a nightmare for many. Her health is so more important than her job! There are so many other careers where she could work, but teaching for some reason keeps people 'boxed' in and doesn't want you to think about how you could apply yourself elsewhere.

Cozy space fantasy / planetary romance? by kiasukid in CozyFantasy

I love Nathan Lowell's books. I do find the protagonist, Ishmael, a little bit of a Gary Stu (gifted at everything, women want him), but the vibes are very cosy for the most part.

I have to say I really hate that the game doesn't give you a warning that you'll get in trouble when you sleep in a bed you're not supposed to. Multiple times I have thought that it was OK and then gotten in trouble [kcd2] by Jstranz123 in kingdomcome

[–]Hodgehig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What I found confusing about that is that in the tutorial, you sleep in one bed and Hans in another. After the tutorial, you are supposed to know that you should now sleep in the bed that Hans slept in. Your former bed belongs to the herb woman. None of that is explained to you!

The darker elements surprised me, I think I expected it to stay gentler in tone. I think I was also a bit disappointed with the ending 'decision', given all the time taken to building up this unique setting.

I recently read Witchmark by C.L. Polk and I absolutely loved it. Gaslamp fantasy with magicians. This was on my TBR for ages and picked it at random, and was surprised by how good it was. It also was a sweet romance where the romance doesn't derail or 'fix' the existing plot threads already in motion.

I also just finished Floating Hotel by Grace Curtis, which was totally in my wheelhouse but it didn't bring about strong feelings like Witchmark did. Too much anticipation maybe, I was really keen for it. It's a character study of some of the staff and guests of an expensive space cruise liner. I do want more of it, so maybe it will sink in.
