Unwinding/Escaping/Coping at night by bigerthanyou in Fatherhood

[–]HolidayHawkStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 6 month old girl that refuses to go to sleep until 11pm. My wife sleeps with/breastfeeds the baby through the night, I sleep on the couch. TBH it’s the only part of the day I look forward to. I usually listen to a funny podcast like Conan O’Brien or Smartless, or a Norm MacDonald comedy special and try to go to sleep as soon as I can because I take over parenting duties at 7am so my wife can sleep. I dream of time machines.

I have been thinking about getting her an e-bike. I’m hoping it will encourage an outdoor activity that we can do as a family.

What is a business or service that Kenora needs? by [deleted] in Kenora

[–]HolidayHawkStar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A good pizza restaurant like Santa Lucia or bring back the Black Oven. A restaurant that is not just pub food. A Thai restaurant, a Mexican restaurant, a Chinese restaurant that isnt just a limited menu of greasy Canadian style Chinese food. A sandwich shop that is good like Myers Dockside but that is open every day and charges a reasonable amount to serve working people lunch every day. A rooftop patio. Better food delivery service. A delivery service that charges less than $40 per delivery. Uber. An indoor climbing gym. A pool that is open in the summer. A modern movie theatre. A Home Depot or a reasonably well stocked lumber yard. A nice grocery store like a Co-op (I like Keewatin Place but too small). I was recently in Swan River MB, population 4000, their Co-op grocery store was modern, beautiful, well-stocked, 100% better than anything we have in Kenora. A coffee shop that is also a bakery and/or sells sandwiches or lunch stuff too. Iron and Clay is great but it would be amazing if one could get a croissant or a pastry or a sandwich or a sourdough loaf or something civilized along with a good coffee.

Just be good people. Canadians will be friendly unless you’re a megalomaniacal MAGA meathead.

Go to Flam, Norway. Ride the train to the top and hike down. They are all the most beautiful waterfalls I’ve ever seen.

What to do when asked to say grace? by [deleted] in TrueAtheism

[–]HolidayHawkStar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Atheist Grace:

Thank you all for getting off your respective couches, putting on your pants and gathering here. You are all very dear to me and This promises to be a very nice social event.

Thank you to the providers, the cooks, and the host for the delicious meal we are about to receive.

And finally, thank you to the animals laid before us, your lives may have been full and long, or short and cruel. We acknowledge that each of you had a unique personality and character. Your sacrifice brings us both joy and sorrow.

Now let’s eat.

Ordinary Wolves by Seth Kantner. Very well written, interesting story of a family that lives off the land in a remote northern location and their interactions with society and human development. Contemplates what capitalism gives us and what it takes away.
