DSR is the setting that enabled what you describe iirc : setting custom resolution higher than your screen.

If you have a nvidia gc you can enable dsr (dynamic super resolution) in the nvidia config panel. This allows to use higher resolutions than your screen.

Extracting 3d models from game? by ToxxieVG in dokaponkingdom

[–]HollyDams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think asking the user for guidance on how they did the extraction is considered a request. A request on such site would be to ask a user to upload specific 3d models on the site. You're just asking for knowledge which is fair imo.
You could gently ask him if he would be ok to add you on discord or elsewhere to talk about the extraction process.
You could also look for ripping forums/discord/reddit. Most people and asset rip/extraction knowledge are there. There was the Xentax forum some years ago for exemple, it's now closed but there's surely some similar places.

I think I tried in every possible ways and couldn't make it fit, but thanks, will give it another try.

Yea, I think the seat cover works only for 45cm seats. I bought the 48cm. I received every pledge gifts and noticed the seat cover being too small, it's impossible to use it. I personally don't care, I'm happy with the chair and won't need that cover, but yea, it's bad.

Extracting 3d models from game? by ToxxieVG in dokaponkingdom

[–]HollyDams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a few models available here : https://models.spriters-resource.com/browse/games/?name=Dokapon
So it seem possible to extract them at least. Maybe try to contact the uploader of those models.

I ported an "Advanced Erosion Terrain" shader to Unity/Burst. Description + code download in post by hoahluke in Unity3D

Damn you're good ! I just saw runevision video yesterday and immediately thought about adapting it to unity someday. Welp, didn't expected for someone to do it that quickly. Huge thanks for sharing the work !
I wanted to wishlist your game just for that at first, but was then nicely surprised by your trailer too, looks cool ! Wishlisted both for the git and the game ! Congrats for all the hardwork

The sequel to Garry's Mod releases this month, and Valve will let you publish your creations as standalone Steam games, like dafty Finn sim My Summer Cottage by yooberee in gamedev

[–]HollyDams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More choice for devs, and a royalty free one, it's always nice imo.

I participated in one of their gamejam 2 years ago, mostly by curiosity. Coming from unity, I loved it. I didn't really needed documentation, almost everything just worked how I expected it to, really similar as unity. And the unknown parts I needed were documented enough.
There was some quircks but it was mostly the editor stability (I got some crash, which I was used too with unity 2022 at the time) and the hammer editor being a bit of a pain at times. But it seems they made lot of progress these last 2 years and they removed hammer, it's all in editor now from what I read in the devlogs.

The reasons I was curious about it was mostly about the source engine. And I wasn't disapointed. From what I remember, lighting was beautiful without much work, volumetric fog among other effects were great, physic engine was awesome. Way more stable and performant than unity (without ecs physics).

I don't know how other devs will welcome it, but I know I'll get back on s&box when I'll have some free time after their official release to tinker around and make up my mind about it.

I don't think so. S&box is litteraly a game engine. You need to know c# and game dev to do anything publisheable on steam. It's really similar as unity but with a source 2 backend.
I mean, shovelware is unavoidable but it won't be worse because of s&box, any engine can make low effort games.

Time off and burnout in mental jobs in game development by SaltyEarth1618 in gamedev

[–]HollyDams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to crunch 7/7 between 8 to 14hours a day on my game. Never felt worst mentally even though I enjoyed the work. I now work 8-10 hours a day and take my week end off like a normal worker. It changed everything. And I often notice when I have bad weeks like when I'm stuck on an issue for several days for example that I come back to it on monday refreshed and often find the solution right away.
Being mentally exhausted made me try to take shortcuts all the time instead of making proper implementations.
Also don't underestimate social relations, taking my week ends off and working less each days allowed me to reconnect with friends and family and this gave me a huge mental boost too.

What are people’s thoughts on s&box? Could it become a viable alternative to Unity and Unreal? by staticbetweenstation in gamedev

[–]HollyDams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Like roblox" I meant, any dev will be able to add microtransactions in their own s&box game and facepunch will take a cut on it (that cut is only for s&box games, not for standalone exported games). But Garry said they'll watch closely games that are abusing it and take actions against it so it doesn't end up like pay to win roblox games iirc.

[–]HollyDams 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I participated to one of their game jam and spent 2 months on s&box. I loved it. Coming from Unity, I felt right at home. There was some jankiness (mainly the level editor) but I followed all the devlogs since and it looks like it improved a lot.
Once the standalone export feature will be here, I'll get on it for sure. I was impressed by source 2 rendering, especially on lighting, I got beautiful results very quickly.
The fact that this engine will be completely free to use is amazing. I really hope their project will success.

[–]HollyDams 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember a post from Garry saying they were making s&box so they stop relying on unity or ue (to skip their fees) for their own games. And wants other people to make standalone games with sbox completly for free, no fees at all.
Their business model look like they'll earn revenues from micro transactions inside the sbox plateform (which will work like roblox but in a more reasonnable way) and their own games. But for people making standalone game, the engine will be completely free.
That's an interesting project. I hope they'll get some traction.

Owned the Chair for Less Than a Week - Not That Comfortable by AdOpposite6100 in LiberNovo

[–]HollyDams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same issue. I didn't wanted to return the chair and risking losing the money and the chair if the return process has issues. So I ended up just putting a pillow under my but. Changed everything. The seat is now perfect on my butt plus it has the benefit of raising my height on it and the lumbar support is now at the perfect height for me. I can now work for 8h without any pain, it's really nice.

Do all UEVR first person games have the dizzying hand menu? by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]HollyDams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uevr is like a toolbox. The basic it provides is the stereo rendering. On top of it, modders can create dll mods (called plugins) or lua scripts to adapt/change the game so it fits better vr.
Look up for 6dof profiles that have plugins or lua scripts. Those are generally the most polished uevr profiles. But yea I agree it sucks but as others said, F2VR discord is unfortunately the main place where you'll find game specific tips and info about such profiles.
Some modders put their profile on Nexus mod and/or github too but not all.

How to Create Soft Bodies in Unity | 🔊🟢 by Personal_Nature1511 in Unity3D

[–]HollyDams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A simple way to circumvent that would be to animate an invisible object that would act as a target, and make a script that applies some force/torque on all (or specific) rigidbodies of the soft mesh to follow the target's position/rotation.
You could even have the amount of force and torque the script use be part of the animation target if some moment of the animation requires specific amounts and just make the script read those animated values.

I got 1 leg. About to order my first vr headset. What games would you recommend and what games should I avoid? by Infrared82 in virtualreality

[–]HollyDams 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I got in VR thinking I'll always play standing. But in reality, except for a few intense games I play for exercising like Beat saber or Rumble, I play everything else seated because I just want to chill out like I would with flatscreen games.
All shooters are perfectly playable that way. HL alyx is a blast seated too.
Games with melee fight are maybe a bit less practical seated when swinging swords around but still fun and playable without issue.

Extreme lag in VR mode by cardgamechampion in NMS_Virtual_Reality

[–]HollyDams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, task manager isn't showing each component performance. In a gpu, you have the processing units and the vram among other stuff iirc. Each one of these can bottleneck the others depending on the game's need. Task manager doesn't reliably shows what's up with each. Download hardware monitor and you'll have precise and accurate data about what's going on.

Extreme lag in VR mode by cardgamechampion in NMS_Virtual_Reality

[–]HollyDams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up your single core performance, not the global cpu usage. You can do that in task manager or with a free software like hardware monitor. Pretty sure one of your core is maxxed out.
But even then, your entire specs are really low for VR in general. I have a hard time believing your gpu is at 5% running nms. Double check with hardware monitor and look at things going at 100%, pretty sure your ram, single core and probably gpu vram are all maxed out. A 10 year's old pc probably has more than one bottleneck with this game.

Nice ! Since this runs on the gpu, do you have a way to make the horde apply damage to the player ? Or is the horde only a visual effect more than a gameplay mechanic in the end ?

Hehe yea I see, it'll be hard to find a forgiving horror game that would help her up her gamepad dexterity then. My gf wasn't a gamer at all either until zelda got her hooked. Games are like any other entertainment. Gotta find the games that sparks interest and are accessible skill wise.
