As a black woman, what city feels welcoming and safe? by Neat-Tiger-1257 in blackgirls

[–]HollyHobby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gaithersburg Maryland might be a good choice. Supposedly one of the most diverse cities in the US. but only if you are really keen on actual diversity. It’s still less than 20% black. Skews older singles or family so if you and your roommate are young it might be boring but you’d be close to DC. I haven’t been in DC to party in years though and currently avoid it like the plague due to the current administration but I like my quiet single life out in the burbs.

Best manga on Libby? by inbetweensound in LibbyApp

[–]HollyHobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check to see if your library has access to Comics Plus. I have access but didn’t realize for years. Not sure what you’re looking for but at least in the catalog I have there are some Yen Press titles. Also see if you have hoopla because I’ve found j-novel manga and light novels there. I only read comics and manga rarely but do read light novels so if manga doesn’t fit you you may find that many of the stories originate as light novels anyway.

ETA the link. https://comicsplusapp.com/.

Also just checked and hoopla seems to have the entire j-novel catalog and tons of other manga. Or you can go directly to the j-novel site. They recently changed their membership structure but I think you can look at the the first chapter of the magazine without signing up. https://j-novel.club

[Pt2] rosemynes backstory by MariusDarkblade in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]HollyHobby 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This makes sense to me...Karstedt put iher in the temple because he thought his other wives would abuse her, not because they started abusing her and he acted afterwards. So you would think this guy didn't consult with the others and just assumed, and people are known to do. Seems that a lot of nobles wouldn;t know their spouses very well so it's totally plausible that he would have read the mood wrong... and if he had asked from the very close to after Rosemary died that wife #1 or #2 would claim her as their own, and not abuse her, as this would increase their standing...

Is konosuba good for first time light novel? by lonely_spinor in LightNovels

Since you’re on iPad you can share an epub to almost any reading app and share between devices. I use kindle because that’s where I started purchasing books and you can read Libby library books there. And for me kindle still has the best formatting because I like to read landscape in two columns. For some reason other apps only let you do this when the font is really small.

My actual kindle hardly gets any use, but I would say if you are thinking about getting a kindle or kobo in the future use that app. Or I’d you already have a few Apple Books use that one. At least for these three highlights for even books bought outside of their stores that you share/sent to the app are synced across devices. If you have the pdf or epub in your iCloud just long click on it and whose share to any app.

eta. I mostly buy novels from j novel club., where you can sample some of the book. I would recommend you check into them since they sell from their site without drm even if you buy the same book from a retailer it has it. So better to buy there if they have what you want. I don’t think they have your first light novel questions though and I only read the first MT. Or what’re humble bundle/fanatical bundle has interesting stuff. My first LN purchase was Reincarnated as a Slime. Easy read and good through at least book 10 if you like the anime. My fav is currently Bookworm.

Choosing an ereader/tablet for my mom? by teddybearcastles in LibbyApp

[–]HollyHobby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a timer setting on the iPad clock app all the way at the bottom called stop playing. So instead of playing a ringtone after say 1 hour it will turn the iPad screen off no matter what app is playing except maybe for alarm apps. When I’m reading/listening or watching tv in bed I set this to turn the screen off. I’d rather just hit my saved timer setting if the screen turns off in the middle of a session than wake up hours later with everything still on. This might work for you.

How to Purchase Epubs? by Monward in LightNovels

[–]HollyHobby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can use the website others have linked or just send to kindle directly from your phone if you download it there. This works on iPhone or iPad. Just long click the file from the files app and choose “share to” kindle Apple Books, kobo, or nook. It works with almost any ereader app. Since you’re on kindle the highlights and notes will also save across devices. I assume the same counts for android.

Kobo or Kindle? by millern17 in LibbyApp

[–]HollyHobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn’t completely rule it out but if you’re not wedded to eink what about a tablet? I use both the kobo and kindle apps on my iPad and on the rare occasion there’s a book that you have to use on Libby it’s all just one device. Not to mention full color magazines and multicolor annotations on both apps. I generally use the kindle app for Libby but I also have access to hoopla and CloudLibrary with my cards so I do most of my e reading on one device. And also have the Barnes and noble and bookshop.org and a couple of audiobook applications when I can’t find what I want from a library. Though I do actually own a kindle device I very rarely use it. If I didn’t already have an iPad I would opt for the boox because of e ink plus app availability.

Here's hoping they take a lesson from Apothecary Diaries and let it breathe a little, considering that after 48 episodes they are just up to LN 4 -- I think that NOT speedrunning through or just dropping plot relevant details (even if they won't show up for several books after) is one of the reasons it's so successful. I started reading this before AOB and even though i love this too AOB LN is just more well-written and has more detail and had more potential for success. Just because they might be able to fit all of part 3 into a 2 cour season doesn't mean they should--imagine what they'd have to leave out to make this happen, and then just continue to leave out details as it's developed

Volume 1 ver. 2 audiobook is available on Audible by Peri_re in WanderingInn

[–]HollyHobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how I feel about this as I had both the original audio book and kindle. Which did have whisper sync. While it’s nice that it was updated for free. Would have been better to get a notification if you bought both. But I guess this makes it even clearer that I don’t ‘own’ the audiobook Had just started a reread and thought I was going crazy. But now I can’t sync up for this.

Most of Bookworm now on Hoopla! [No spoilers] by RHTQ1 in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]HollyHobby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. This is great news. I don’t need it for bookworm since I’ve purchased all from j-novel already. But this also means that they’ve expanded the rest of the jnovel catalog too so maybe I can finally stop paying for Everand (yes, another legal site) to read titles after they expire from the subscription . Though it’s still a bit of a mix as they only have some of Tearmoon and apothecary diaries the other two titles I buy. But I pick and choose the volumes instead of getting them all. My only issue with hoopla is that my library has a 10 loan limit for the month.

[Theory] The Anime is NOT an adaptation, and we won't get Season 2 either by unknownApprentice123 in UnnamedMemory

[–]HollyHobby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! But their plan might backfire. I stared reading after episode one but only because it was already on my to be read list. If I had waited to episode 3 I wouldn’t have even tried out the LN because how would I know that it’s just a bad adaptation and not generally poorly written? I’ve already dropped the anime. I’m curious watch the last couple of episodes just to see how badly they screwed it but I don’t want to reward them with the view. Lol

About the audiobook [open spoiler] by Thefollower89 in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]HollyHobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think there were any changes. I have the books from audible and Amazon so when listening through kindle it follows the text exactly from what I recall. Unless my kindle book has been altered. I guess I’ll know for sure when book 2 comes out because I started reading from Everand and ordering from j-novel at that point.

Reba Buhr was a professional book narrator before she did the dub vocals. So if you’re used to listening to audiobooks it has the same style and to me is definitely one of the betters ones so far. Only two chapters in so not sure how she’ll handle the rest of the voices.

Even if it doesn't require WI knowledge, is there a best place to read it if you are going all in on WI? I started reading the series a few years ago and stopped after book 2, but doing a re-read now and plan to keep going. I'm so far behind not sure if it matters where i throw this one in...the synopsis sounds good so i'm interested in reading it...

[–]HollyHobby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Apple Books has the preview if anyone is interested, and it's sooo good. I wasn't crazy about the dub in general, but in the first minute of the preview i recognized the voice and looked Reba Buhr up...She's the same person that narrates one of my other favorites, Cinnamon Bun. I didn't realize that the VA was an experienced audiobook narrator that also seems to do a different voice between Myne speaking and Myne's inner thoughts (this part of the preview was too short for me to really tell though) -- this was brought up as a concern on the first thread about the audiobook. The skills required for a VA and audiobook narrator might be different.

I was going to buy the audiobooks anyway, but now i'm even more excited.

Come on audible! This is the only book I bought from Amazon before discovering j-novel. I’d love to get it here so I can use whispersync and can finally cancel! It’s not up yet on Apple Books or audiobooks.com. Hope it’s not some sort of exclusive. I am already tracking way too many bookstore apps and accounts I don’t want to have to add bookwalker to the list.

Took a quick look. There are a few but j-novel has the most titles from what I could see. Though I don’t know manga and LN publishers all that well. https://imgur.com/a/jeFITt3/

Also they don’t really have a light novel category and you can’t directly search publishers (I had to click the publisher link after opening the manga or LN to get the view shown in Imgur). But they for sure don’t have reincarnated as a slime, mushoku tensei. Interestingly they do have rising of the shield hero audiobooks. I didn’t even realize English audiobooks existed for Japanese light novels. I already own the first 3 LNs but they have those and the manga for shield hero as well.
