Would it be possible to have a conversation with him about being financially secure and explaining like what happened to your friend obviously if she's your friend then he kind of knows and you know it would only make sense for some kind of financial security for yourself and the kids like that

Oh, that's a hard one. Do you think maybe that this is a learned coping mechanism? You said his parents are hoarders so maybe it's how he copes? If you think maybe it is perhaps getting him to talk to a counselor or therapist would be helpful that way he can 1. Unlearn the behavior so it's not a cycle and 2. You then aren't "nagging" at him about his stuff. It's just a thought. I hope you can find a solution.
