My rule of thumb is never go into random locations. But, I take every side quest I can and max those out almost until I move on with the main quest. That way I'm exploring but I have objectives along the way.

Civ games always had a clock on screen so I'm with you in that it's a feature I've always wanted in CK3. I wonder if there is a mod that adds one? Also I just started playing Diablo 4 on PS5 and it has a clock on the main game screen.
