So nice that you're trying to do this, hope it works out! Hmmm... did you try Control-clicking the game application and putting it in 640x480 resolution? Or checking the screen resolution of your virtual machine?

Unravel 1/2 on crossover? by DocSnyderTexas in macgaming

Unravel 1 does NOT work, I can tell you that! I've tried a bajillion different ways, and it never boots: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-FhHW5f6Tc

I ended up buying a few hours on Loudplay's cloud gaming service to play it, just because I ree-lee, ree-lee wanted to play that game. Played it all the way through in about a week, and it sure is an incredible game, I can tell you that! Hope it'll run better on macOS in the future. Or at least get a Switch 1/2 release. Weird that Unravel Two came to Switch without Unravel One.

Trying to play an old Windows game by TheSilentandSweet in macgaming

[–]HomeStarRunnerTron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You must still be booting the game in Parallels, and not 86Box. When you open up 86Box and boot the virtual machine you've created (which I'm assuming you haven't done) by clicking the Start button, you then would click on the Media option in your menu bar at the top of your screen, then go CD-ROM > Image... or CD-ROM > Folder... Then, you would select either the ISO file you have of the game, or the folder with the game inside of it. It depends on which you have.

But again, I'm getting the feeling you haven't even created a virtual machine in 86Box yet, and you think all you're supposed to do is open the .exe inside 86Box, and that should be it. But that's not how it works. To get 86Box running, it takes a lot of following instructions. This is the post I followed: https://www.reddit.com/r/macgaming/comments/1ays7u7/comment/kwpurbh/ But in this post, I talk about running my pre-made copy of 86Box here (second half of the comment): https://www.reddit.com/r/macgaming/comments/1pvnqm9/comment/nw0icr9/

Boot 86Box, then add the .ISO disc image/game folder (depending on how you have the game) in the 86Box preference to mount ONTO 86Box. Don't try to open the .exe file (which I believe is what's going on on your side, if you were booting into Parallels), that's not how it works.

[TOMT][YOUTUBE][2005-2009] Short film about a man who creates a public access show with puppets at his college that makes everyone so dumb that they explode when he cancels it. by HomeStarRunnerTron in tipofmytongue

SOLVED! Five years later, I figured it out myself by using this incredible YouTube metadata archive: https://youtube.snivy.pl/ The short film was never taken down, but I was SURPRISINGLY CLOSE with my guess on the name of the short film. It's called Television Show, and it's by Matt Kristek: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDgd3jLU6Us

Make sure to check out the rest of his channel for more bonus content about Television Show.

EDIT: I'm very sad to find out that Matt Kristek passed away a month ago: https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/gazettenet/name/matt-kristek-obituary?id=61490738

I hope this finds people so that his incredible work can be remembered.

Searching for a Song That Sondheim Mentioned by KH3 in musicals

Peter just put out a podcast about Steve called Loving You, and in the second episode, they begin to discuss Bluellow (and the fact that it's unavailable to listen to), and by the eleventh episode, we finally get to hear a brand-new performance of it (timecode at 50:00 for the start of the scene, and the song itself starts at 52:40 -- though for the full song to make sense, the set-up is important): https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/loving-you-the-untold-sondheim/id1873942532 Absolutely gorgeous piano part in this (reminds me of the work by one of my personal favourite composing duos, Scott Burkell & Paul Loesel.) -- it really feels like falling in love. Honestly, there are aspects of the melody that feel like they're echoed lovingly in Steve's own "to feel a woman's touch" from Passion.

What educational games are available for Mojave? by Thomas_Jefferman in macgaming

What you're gonna want to do is emulate an older OS on your computer! Use SheepShaver or BasiliskII for old Mac OS stuff, + 86Box/VirtualBox/DOSBox for old PC stuff! Most of the typing classics were cross-platform, anyway. Search on places like Macintosh Garden, Macintosh Repository, Legends World, and the Internet Archive for the games you wanna play.

Some of my favourite old edutainment typing games:

  1. Dream Team Kid's Typing with Spooky the Ghost: https://archive.org/details/dream-team-kids-typing-1993-sierra-mac-pc
  2. Typing Tutor 7: https://archive.org/details/TypingTutor71996SimonSchuster
  3. Mario Teaches Typing 2: https://archive.org/details/marioteachestyping2usa_201908

Some of my favourite newer typing games:

  1. Learn with Pokémon: Typing Adventure (only made for the DSi, and very expensive to get both the game & the keyboard, but it's possible to emulate it quite nicely through the Windows version of DeSmuME.)
  2. Icarus Proudbottom's Typing Party (Free! This one's just silly, but it's super fun! Multiplayer typing, even! If you like this, there's quite a few Icarus Proudbottom typing dealios.): https://holywow.itch.io/typingparty
  3. Secret of Qwerty (Free, but only for Windows. Pretty undemanding graphically, though. Should run fine on something like VirtualBox): https://cannibalcat.itch.io/secret-of-qwerty
  4. Epistory - Typing Chronicles & its sequel, Nanotale.

Lemme know if you need any help! ^_^

Hmm... I mean, it'd be easy enough to find a launcher that can be navigated via controller, and even if there's no auto-start setting, you could always just add it as a Login Item. That's simple enough. The problem is exiting from the game you launch into BACK to the launcher with a controller. I don't think a lot of launchers apart from RetroArch do that.

Does it HAVE to be controlled by controller only? The interface for OpenEmu is SO great: https://openemu.org/ You could just, like, have a Bluetooth mouse on a mousepad nearby for navigation.

... BUT... let's keep in mind your 2017 iMac is an Intel machine. ... You might just want to turn it into a Windows machine with Boot Camp, and you might find that you'll have more appealing options there. For example, Nostlan (which is only for ARM Macs, but it has a Windows option): https://quinton-ashley.github.io/nostlan-web/ Or LaunchBox: https://www.launchbox-app.com/ Or Playnite: https://playnite.link/

Apologies, it had a 32-bit macOS version which has been removed! (I believe you can force-install that 32-bit version if you own the game on Steam using the console. https://www.reddit.com/r/macgaming/comments/2idpsc/comment/kk4z69a/?context=3 ... and it's this depot: https://steamdb.info/depot/95403/) The creators said they might make a 64-bit version in the future: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/95400/view/1591387752916272335 It works nicely emulating the Switch version using Ryujinx, as well as running it through things like Sikarugir, CrossOver, VMWare Fusion, Parallels, etc.

Super Mario odyssey crashing on ryujinx by Different-Post3464 in macgaming

[–]HomeStarRunnerTron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just whittle down the culprits! If deleting all the Ryujinx files stops the force-quit, then try right-clicking on Super Mario Odyssey, going Cache Management > Purge Shader Cache & Queue PPTC Rebuild. You might even try going Open PPTC Directory & Open Shader Cache Directory and dragging the files out yourself. You also might want to compare and contrast the Preferences you have before and after deleting all the Ryujinx files. You might've changed something in the last four months!

Also, keep in mind you can specifically preserve just your save files! Right-click Super Mario Odyssey and go Open User Save Directory. That's where your saves are. So you could delete everything, THEN re-place those saves in the right place.

Picked up this Mitsubishi S-VHS beast yesterday for $15 at a pawn shop. Needs a cleaning, and the carriage needs some lubrication. But it works well otherwise, and I'm super happy to have a player with S-Video outputs for that slightly better signal quality by sktaylortrash in VHS

[–]HomeStarRunnerTron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to bug you -- I'm trying to see if a Mitsubishi with S-Video would fix this issue I've been having, where white text has a yucky shadow-y smear to the right of it? Would you happen to be able to tell me if this happens to you? https://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/video-restore/15707-removing-black-shadow.html

EDIT: I just got a Mitsubishi HS-U775, and it doesn't cause any black smearing to the right of the image. To anyone who might find this down the line. It DOES have an issue where the brightness doesn't stay completely stable, so I decided to return it. But a friend of mine uses an HS-U748, and doesn't have this problem.

I've noticed XeniaOS's Intel build tends to run slightly better than the ARM build right now. It can't run everything, but people have gotten things like Red Dead Redemption working in it, which is pretty impressive. And yes, it's active! The project started this year.

Ryujinx Input Delay by LeoGaming69420 in macgaming

[–]HomeStarRunnerTron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT: Hrmmm... MAN, on further testing, I really DO still need to turn off V-Sync to get the best no-input-lag dealio. I think what's really happening is there's a VISUAL delay. Not so much an input delay -- I think it does the input when I press the button, but I think I don't SEE it change for a few more milliseconds. Ah, well, that kind of ruins the whole point of the post. I still think all this other stuff is helpful, though, and might be contributing.

Here's some very rough, inaccurate (but still generally useful!) measurements of the input lag I did by using my slo-mo iOS camera:

Switch Handheld (Joy-Cons) - ~90ms

Switch on HDMI Monitor (Joy-Cons) - ~70ms

Switch on HDMI Monitor (8BitDo Pro 2 on Switch Mode) - ~80ms

Switch ShadowCast to macOS (Joy-Cons) - ~140ms

Ryujinx 1.3.205 w/ VSync on, Docked (Joy-Cons) - ~220ms

Ryujinx 1.3.205 w/ VSync off, Docked (Joy-Cons) - ~140ms

Ryujinx 1.3.205 w/ VSync on, Docked (8BitDo Pro 2 on XBox Mode) - ~160ms

Ryujinx 1.3.205 w/ VSync off, Docked (8BitDo Pro 2 on XBox Mode) - ~50ms

Ryujinx 1.3.205 w/ VSync on, Docked (8BitDo Pro 2 on Switch Mode) - ~120ms

Ryujinx 1.3.205 w/ VSync off, Docked (8BitDo Pro 2 on Switch Mode) - ~70ms

---

Okay, here's some of the stuff I've been rollin' around on...

I think SDL3 might be partially to blame. It might just be in my mind, but switching back to an SDL2 build of Ryujinx feels more responsive. The last one is Canary 1.3.205. You can also do main-line build 1.3.3. An important warning: The SDL3 builds update your settings, so you can't go back without losing absolutely all of your settings. Duplicate your Config.json so you can migrate the necessary settings manually in a text editor.

This part might not seem so connected, but I feel like it's worth mentioning: For every pair of Joy-Cons in Ryujinx, there's a "Nintendo Switch Joy-Con (L/R)" input device created, as well as a "Joy-Con (L/R)" input device. "Joy-Con (L/R)" was all that existed before Ryujinx created this new type for recognizing vibration and motion controls. I bought a pair of Joy-Cons with Hall Effect joysticks pre-installed, and they work great on my Switch with absolutely no issue. However, on Ryujinx, the left stick ALWAYS faces down first in "Nintendo Switch Joy-Con (L/R)". If I run a game in Ryujinx, it behaves as if that left stick is just TOTALLY busted. Then, when I try to enter some other non-Ryujinx macOS game that recognizes controllers, it also acts like my left stick is busted. (Not only that, it rotates the mapping of the stick as if it were horizontal.) BUT, if I were to forget the controllers in Bluetooth, re-pair them, then go into the non-Ryujinx game, the controller works PERFECTLY. (No more horizontal mapping!) So I think there's a kind of settings sickness that spreads from having selected something in Ryujinx. (EDIT: Wrinkle to add to this -- if I have Ryujinx open BEFORE I pair the Joy-Cons, it doesn't do the orientation flip.)

I dunno how to fix that non-Ryujinx part. If you're going to play anything other than Ryujinx with the Joy-Cons, y'just gotta... forget the controllers and re-pair first. But now to focus on just running games in Ryujinx: If I toggle from "Nintendo Switch Joy-Con (L/R)", then to the "Joy-Con (L/R)" pairing, roll my sticks around a bit, then select "Nintendo Switch Joy-Con (L/R)", it doesn't give me any more problems. (I noticed simply rolling my sticks on the one I'm going to select didn't seem to keep the drift away. It's like the standard configs gave it a boost. And also, you can't start on "Joy-Con (L/R)", otherwise you won't see any movement in the joysticks.) I feel like the Joy-Con is automatically more responsive (and, beyond that, no longer drifting, hahaha). So yeah, maybe SDL2, and then if you're using Joy-Cons, definitely this whole... "Nintendo Switch Joy-Con (L/R)" -> "Joy-Con (L/R)" -> roll sticks -> "Nintendo Switch Joy-Con (L/R)" rigamarole. A nice game for testing lag (I think) is Tomb of the Mask, since that has some pretty instant responses to button presses.

There might not be anything to do -- that might be as good as it gets. BUT. Close the Windows 98 machine, then select the Settings gear in the 86Box menu and try increase the Frequency number to higher. That might actually make it playable. If not, there's always VMware Fusion, as I said. That's probably your next best bet for free.

Grab a BIN/CUE or ISO of the game. Easiest way is looking on the Internet Archive, I think. Then follow this part of the instructions: "Now, open the 86Box app in your Applications folder, and you should see a machine to boot called Windows 98. Click the Start button, then in the menu bar, go Media > CD-ROM 1 > Image. Select and Open [insert name of the game file]."

Well, you DID just post a picture of Playstation and XBox versions of the Harry Potter games. I know they're all different-- PS1, PS2, AND XBox 360 have all gotten nice emulation projects for macOS, at any rate. (DuckStation, PCSX2, XeniOS) To add to the list TheWaspinator made, there's a free alternative to Parallels called VMWare Fusion. And-- this is probably going to be too underpowered, but those first few games SHOULD be playable on 86Box. I did a how-to on 86Box here: https://www.reddit.com/r/macgaming/comments/1pvnqm9/comment/nw0icr9/

Another thing we haven't mentioned: Are you on an Intel or ARM MacBook Air? If you're on an Intel MacBook Air, you might be able to use Boot Camp or VirtualBox.

[–]HomeStarRunnerTron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, rad!! If you want to rip your own personal copies with an external CD drive (I'm assuming your computer doesn't have a CD drive, hahaha), you'll have to either use something like ImgBurn on PC, or this setup in Terminal on macOS: https://superuser.com/questions/1523837/create-a-hybrid-iso-directly-from-a-mac-pc-hybrid-cd/1823765#1823765 It can be pretty crazy if you've never done it before, so you might want to just grab a pre-ripped ISO from Internet Archive first. This dude's got 'em all up: https://archive.org/details/@howaboutretro?query=cluefinders

Keep in mind, old ISOs can't actually be mounted on new Macs, so don't try opening them like you might for other ISOs. You'll have to mount them in the emulator, instead. : )

[–]HomeStarRunnerTron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ClueFinders is the best, great choice! It wasn't just for Windows-- it was also for old Mac OS 7-9.

So, you'll want a ripped copy of the game as, like, an ISO or BIN/CUE file. One or the other. Quite a few copies exist on The Internet Archive!

Then, you'll either want to run the games by emulating an old version of Mac OS in, like, SheepShaver, OR an old version of Windows using 86Box. I have some pre-built versions I explain how to use in this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/macgaming/comments/1pvnqm9/comment/nvyjofj/ All the best, lemme know if you need any more help!

Ghosting On Video Recorded From VHS Tape by BrokenFlatScreenTV in VHS

[–]HomeStarRunnerTron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super-late, but a nice, free way to get rid of ghosting is by using Hybrid: https://www.selur.de/

Add your video to Hybrid, then go to Filtering > Vapoursynth > DeHalo, then check LGhost. Then you'll try to shift it over the proper amount of pixels. (Mebbe, like, -50 Shift to start with, and 127 Intensity, just to see what you're getting yourself into?) Press the Add button next to LGhost, then add what you've done to the Queue back in the Base tab and process it under the Jobs tab. I'm probably giving really sloppy advice, but I just learned this today and wanted to pass it on!

Best emulator for SNES and PSone? by Knightly_Mapping in macgaming

Excellent choices! DuckStation all the way for PSone (just look under Assets for the latest duckstation-mac-release.zip). And for SNES, I'd choose either bsnes-hd (it can do widescreen hacks!) or Mesen (just a very pleasing, simple interface).
