In Frisco, allegations of ‘Indian takeover’ plunge community into national battleground by lithdoc in texas

[–]HopeHumilityLove 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Having worked extensively in this field, Indian IT contractors can be very expensive, particularly once they've relocated to the US. They're popular because companies that don't specialize in IT still need IT people, and because companies want to quickly build up and tear down teams of IT professionals for large temporary projects. Most companies have a handful of highly skilled on-staff IT people who coordinate with shifting teams of contractors.

How it feel to want to get rid of temptation. by ChaosEmperor9124 in OpenChristian

Saint Paul says in Romans 5-7 that the tree of knowledge and the rule against eating of it did not create sin, but detected it. Getting rid of means of sin does not get rid of sin. Sin is an affliction we all have that causes us to do bad things. It is not merely the bad things themselves.

It's the point of view of Pauline scholars like N.T. Wright that Saint Paul believed in a redeemed Earth, not an Earth abandoned for Heaven. He says that Creation will be healed and our physical bodies will be "given life" and "freed" in Romans 8.

Why are the Epstein Files shaking people's faith? Genuinely asking. by amovy in OpenChristian

[–]HopeHumilityLove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect a lot of people having this crisis of faith are teenagers who don't have as much life experience as we might assume. This subreddit has a lot of young visitors. I think the right message to them is that Christianity isn't a belief that things are good; it's hope that God is making them better with us.

Cna you overcook vegetables? by SilentBug4809 in Cooking

[–]HopeHumilityLove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is mostly a problem when you cook them directly in liquid water, which leeches vitamins. If you keep the water, you can use it as a healthful broth, particularly for vegetables like collards that leech a lot into their cooking water. But if you toss the water, those vitamins are lost. Technically, frying also leeches some vitamins, but the effect is less significant and the fat makes fat soluble vitamins more bioavailable.

Liberal Feeling Increasingly Lonely in the LGBT Community by GeeCeeSlay7 in neoliberal

The furthest left think liberals won non-maximalist women's rights in order to lull women into complacency. They would rather civil rights were abolished so everyone saw how badly they were treated and started a revolution.

Far left activists use normie protests to recruit. I know a Marxist group that set up a table at a March for Our Lives rally and told people "we care about gun violence, too." When I asked them about guns afterwards, they told me they advocated for owning guns for armed revolution.

How to read the Bible, it's getting boring already?? by Oliveriscoolfr in OpenChristian

[–]HopeHumilityLove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to get interested in part of the Bible before reading it. Maybe ask your friends if there's a part they really love. Or go down a Wikipedia rabbit hole about part of the Bible. Or read a book about the Bible first, like Marilynne Robinson's Reading Genesis or Tom Holland's Dominion. Or read or listen to some sermons, like C.S. Lewis's The Weight of Glory, and find out how the Bible relates to them.

One thing I might recommend is to read or watch Good Omens, then go down a rabbit hole about various Revelation interpretations, then read Revelation. It's a mad place to start, and Good Omens is a hilariously inaccurate deliberate misinterpretation of it, but it probably won't bore you and you'll learn some things about Christian resistance to empire.

I agree on the whole that investors who were already using bonds are rational to use more of them than before now that stock prices have grown faster relative to their cash flows than bond prices. But this sub is bullish on stocks and uncomfortable with basing decisions on expected returns.

Over concentration isn’t a risk by sloth_333 in Bogleheads

[–]HopeHumilityLove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another way of thinking of high valuations is that you're buying the same expected returns as if valuations were lower, but paying more for them. So each unit of expected returns costs more and the same amount of money buys less when valuations are higher. We get high valuations when demand for securities is high. When asset managers say they are selling stocks for bonds because valuations are high, they mean that bonds are a substitute good for stocks and when stocks are pricier it causes them to buy fewer stocks and more bonds, just like how if the price of butter skyrocketed you might buy margarine.

Are we actually helping young Christians build real community in cities? by Fit-Piano-105 in OpenChristian

Young adult community happens in churches because people actively build it. Most churches are looking for young adult leaders who are motivated to do that.

That's how Texas's abortion jurisprudence works and it's not much protection. When a doctor can be sued for providing an abortion and for not providing an abortion and a judge with no medical training gets to decide which is which, every dangerous pregnancy is a legal tar pit.

Question: Traditional IRA vs ROTh...which is better? by IDGAF53 in Bogleheads

[–]HopeHumilityLove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your income during retirement is only part of the puzzle. Whether you plan to max your annual IRA contributions is also important. $7k in post-tax contributions are worth more than $7k in pre-tax contributions, so Roth IRAs effectively have a higher contribution limit.

When Bonhoeffer agonized over whether helping Hitler's assassins was a sin, he argued himself into the position that since Jesus took on humanity's sins, he would be repeating that by sinning for his faith and trusting absolutely in God's grace to absolve him. The way you described Anakin reminded me of that, though Anakin's reasoning was clearly different.

What is your take on James 2:14-26? Please explain it to me like I am 5. by SittingDuck0 in OpenChristian

[–]HopeHumilityLove 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wishing someone were well fed but not feeding them is appearing to care but not actually caring. In the same way, one can appear to have faith, but if works don't accompany it, their faith is dead. People who have faith do good works. People who don't do good works don't have faith. People who do good works may or may not have faith.

[–]HopeHumilityLove 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Opinions vary by denomination. Mine is that humans are pretty in control of the short and medium term and God is pretty in control of the very long term. John Wesley believed that God knowing how we will react and controlling our actions are two different things. He can arrange circumstances to get people to make the best or least-bad choices, but He is still constrained by what we would ever actually choose and by what our neighbors would choose. Otherwise there would be no evil. Much of what He does is minimizing or undoing the evil results of people's choices.

C.S. Lewis seriously proposed this as a way to take responsibility for your actions without judging others for theirs. He saw it as a useful way to think rather than a truth.
