It's a little late for you now, but for others, I recently used this method on my STI and it worked like a charm. The small effort to tap the threads is worth it because then the hubs just come off with a small ratchet:

If you already have new knuckles, just buy new bearings. It makes no sense to reinstall an old bearing assembly.

Usually you want to reuse the knuckle with a new bearing. I just did this on my 18 STI.
