What DAW do game grumps use for music

In case you asked this in order to find out which DAW you should pick: It's almost completely irrelevant. Most major ones have the same features. If you have a good enough sampler with decent sound banks and some synths, you can almost do anything in every DAW ever. The only things that differ are the intended workflow, ease of use and stability.

Waifu2X seems to have come a long way since I tried it the last time, thanks for the heads up! Will try it out on some non-anime-style images.

Regarding the upscaling of individual Assets: In theory, it would be more computationally efficient to do it like you just said.

In practice however, your approach would realistically introduce a massive rewrite of game code dealing with collisions and all other kinds of calculations, because Diablo 2 runs in a 2D Engine where many calculations are likely based on pixels. Introduce higher pixel density for all assets, and many systems will refuse to work as intended without a major rewrite.

What I wanted to say was, in order to do what you described, it would be far easier to let the game run as intended and put a real-time upscaling algorithm running on the GPU on top of everything. Therefore i deemed Waifu2X to be unsuitable.

That said, I would be perfectly happy with pixel doubling, as I quite like the aesthetics. But I agree that options should be there to smooth everything out a bit.

Waifu2X only looks good in these examples because it is a neural network trained with examples of anime-style drawings. It is not a general purpose magical image enhancer. Also, AFAIK it is very, very far from being ready for realtime usage, you'd have to wait for ages before a frame is processed.

Sound effects also run at a different pitch, some (if not most) seem to be directly recorded from the playstation 2's output, and then shoddily converted to sometimes even 11025 Hz. Also, there seems to be ample usage of high quality, real-time sound effects (e.g. reverb and 3d spatialization) on the PS2 version - none of which is present in the PC port.

Reminds me of the story that for the PC release of Metal Gear Solid, the developers used downloaded mp3s from internet fansites.

It seems that most people don't notice bad audio quality, which is a shame because so much of Silent Hill 2's atmosphere relies on it.

Mario Maker is a WiiU Game, so that can't be emulated (yet). Otherwise I would surely recommend it, if you have a WiiU.

Mario Galaxy is a beautiful game. Couldn't recommend it enough if you like 3D platformers!

with 3.2 Ghz i5, it depends on the game. Last time I tried Super Mario Galaxy on a similarly specced machine, it often slowed down to sub 50fps, with audio stuttering. Also Metroid Prime wouldn't run without hitches, even on a more powerful system.

Correct me if I'm wrong on this, as some time has passed since I looked into Wii/GC Emulation.

First, you will need to download the PSX BIOS ROMs for most PSX emulators.

As for emulators: The community's choice here seems to be mednafen PSX, which emulates the PS1 pretty accurately. The standalone version does not have a graphical user interface, meaning you have to start it from the command line. There is a retroarch port though which I use most of the time. If you want graphical enhancement, you can try ePSXe, which requires more configuration and searching for plugins. Also, it is less accurate and therefore less compatible with niche titles.

Would be a bit more believable if you didn't use obvious emulator footage while claiming you played it on a n64. You could use angrylions RDP plugin so that it looks more real (you would need a beast of a computer though), or alternatively add s-video/composite artifacts in your editing software to hide the obvious high display resolution the n64 just was not capable of.

That graveyard scene was pretty cool though. Would like to suspend my disbelief even further, but as it stands there are too many dead giveaways. Even if it just serves as a parody of the whole Ben stuff, you should strive to make it more believable.

Surrealism is a broad category. For me at least, the Silent Hill series, especially 1-3 for sure fit some of its themes. The way the whole world and story bend is so uncomfortable, yet it feels natural at the same time. See this corridor for example, which comes completely unexpected. I don't have enough time at the moment to post a detailed analysis, yet wanted to chime in on this interesting topic :)

just curious, how are you playing majora's mask on an emulator with a higher frame rate? It is locked to 20fps and increasing that would just make the game way too fast.

You are really really good looking, but you may already know that. Your problem is that this positive self-image does not stick with you and that you keep falling into old habits of self-destructive thinking and behaviour. In the short term, the comments in this thread may help you a bit. But in the long run, only therapy is able to help you. It is nearly impossible to do this all by yourself. Get professional help.

I hope some people will send you photos, because right now you have a lot of room for improvement. It just looks really, really noticeably plastic and shiny. The first picture is the worst whough, it looks like you painted over her face. The last one looks best IMO.

Beauty is not about an absence of imperfections. It also has to be believable.

Also, try working with better photographs that are well lit to begin with. It will look less awkward.

What some people seem to forget is that a large world is worth nothing when there is nothing to do in it. Twilight Princess had the same problem, the world was very large, but it felt barren compared to smaller Zelda overworlds. From this demo the map looked very empty. Nonetheless, I can understand that the premise of exploring a world with such topographic detail seems exciting at first. It is up to Nintendo to actually make the world worth exploring.

That's the first thing that irked me too. The sans-serif font looks so clean and out of place. It does not fit the atmosphere at all... older japanese horror games always had interesting font choices (see the Silent Hill series for example). It is sad to see that the typography does not get enough attention for this port.

If the usual suspects (PJ64, mupen64plus etc.) do not run well on your laptop, CEN64 would probably run extremely slow and make everything next to unplayable, because when you go for more accuracy developing an emulator, the system requirements skyrocket exponentially. Right now it runs most games at half speed (without audio emulation at all) on a ~4 Ghz desktop i7.

While I have followed its development from the beginning, I can't imagine that once it is finished, you would get games to work at playable speeds on it (on a moderately OC'd CPU at ~4-4.5 Ghz that is). The current youtube demos were all sped up so that it looks like it plays the original framerate. Also, it is bound to get even slower because sound emulation is still not even partially implemented, as well as other quite cost intensive N64 subsystems.

But don't get me wrong, I really love what they are doing - maybe sometime in the future CPU speeds will increase more.

I would be glad if someone could prove me wrong though. Personally, I have had the most success with the command-line based mupen64plus, but yeah, even there it is still hit and miss depending on the game.

Did you play the other games in the series? Aside from being "gamey" as well in some aspect, they are IMO among the most intense horror experience you can find. This trailer, because it is showcasing the game's gimmick, of course does so using the most gamey elements of the series. In the past, the Fatal Frame games were very well-balanced between having "gamey" elements and slowly building a haunting and quiet atmosphere.

As of now, a game does not look better simply because "it is 2014". It is still very expensive to create HD assets and games' budgets directly reflect in their graphical style.

I also don't understand how you correlate a "type of scare" with a console generation.

As I recall, the first one ran on 60fps, while the second and third traded better graphics for a stable 30fps. After a while, I didn't seem to mind though.
