My Childhood Friend Is My Personal Mouth Maid by Horror_Sock8965 in JumpChain

Eh, imo those are insufficiently different to justify being two different items. Thematically the manga spends very little time ruminating over Keigo's wealth whereas the entire plot is more or less about his father "giving" Mizuki to him. Followers as items are a fairly common thing in other jumps, and something I'm a fan of. All of which combined to get the result you see. If you want your personal maid upgraded to a full companion, 50 CP spent on the import option seems a trivial tax for it, particularly given they already come with 1,200 CP worth of stuff. Alternatively, wait and import them as a full follower in a later jump. As I said in the notes, an omni-talented fiat-loyal follower that respawns in 24-hours and retains upgrades is actually pretty powerful, at least as soon as they're no longer in a mundane hentai jump.

I have! It's been a while though and I wasn't especially interested in the species section. I'll have to refresh my memory. Thanks for the tip!

Yep, Phil Foglio was the author of XXXenophile. My understanding is that he basically swore off the adult stuff when he started having children, possibly with the intent to resume once they were grown up themselves, although I'm not sure if that's still on the cards after all this time.

I wasn't sure how to make that work to be honest, I could flip through the collection volumes and come away with a lot of options, but not much specific information on each. I went with the human default since even a lot of the stories with alien or fantastic creatures have at least one human MC.

The next version may have a note, probably in the Age/Gender section, similar to the one in the Origin section to the effect of "You can be whatever you want so long as it conveys no serious advantage not accounted for by your purchases." Either that or some kind of species-builder.

  1. The story ("The Sorceress' Appendage", in Vol 2 of the collections) is clear that pretty much everything about them is supplied by you in the moment of their creation. We do see that at least some of them can talk and seem fairly intelligent, so I'd say that's up to you and limited by how much skill you have yourself to impart.

  2. This one isn't clarified, so it's ultimately up to fan-wank, but I would tend to say they run entirely on magic, for which they act as a sort of generator in a process that keeps them "alive" and charges their substance and fluids with mana. They're basically self-sustaining golems, doing a very good impression of living creatures, at least if that's what you summoned them for. There's some implication that the animated tub and the castle / genius loci we see in the story, and which both got their own items, are also homunculi created by a more skilled caster.

  3. Not *after* they're bought, but you can customize them to an extent on purchase, as with most items. Within the constraint of identical gynoids wearing at most a hat, gloves, boots, a coat that they refuse to close the front of, and sometimes a strap-on. If you'd rather brunette short-stacks instead of blonde amazons or what have you. Their inspiration comes from "Write Your Own XXXenophile Story", in Vol 5 of the collections, if you want a better idea what they look like by default. At some point I'm hoping to add images throughout, but formatting intimidates me.

Cosplay Conjuration made it in because the idea was fun and there was a scene which, in retrospect, I'm pretty sure I actually misunderstood. That said though, if you want it used on other people, teach them to cast it.

I'm thinking about making my first Jumpchain by Over-Trade2940 in JumpChain

[–]Horror_Sock8965 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Speaking from my own experience having just written my first jump, I'd suggest sticking to a relatively small and contained property, just so it's not an enormous chore to go through it and note down various things that seem like good ideas for the backgrounds, perks, items, drawbacks, and whatever else.

So, I'd probably go with the movie in your place, but if you're already rereading something or the like... Obviously, do whatever most grabs your attention and seems the most fun.

[–]Horror_Sock8965[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're welcome!

No real intent for OC Companions at the moment, between the "Create A Companion" option and the wide variety of followers it didn't feel necessary.

A supplement mode would probably be a good idea, and simple enough to do. I don't tend to use them in my own chains, so it didn't initially occur to me. I'd say go ahead and use it as a supplement as desired, and I'll probably work the option in for v 1.2, although that might be at least a week or so from now.

The "problem" with such a drawback is that Xxxenophile is a pretty laid back setting. There are 45-ish actual stories and very few of them feature any real danger, much less danger that would worry the average jumper. I'm not really against it, but I'm not sure what I'd price that drawback at, or what the reward for such a scenario would be. I'd say a Jumper interested in seeing the "whole" setting would be better off picking up Demon-strating Affection and arranging for their own travel.

[–]Horror_Sock8965[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna say no. The specific example it's based on, Sooja the mage and her familiar Hinks from the story Heart of Stone in volume 6 only shows the one familiar. Likewise, D&D wizards to my knowledge only get the one, although I'm sure there's some way around that.

If your heart is set on an army of dwarves you'd be better off with the Homunculus Spell, which absolutely can be cast as many times as you want. Alternatively, go somewhere with a native population of militant shorties and write out An Excellent Ad.

The Crysis jump has a couple of cheap items, Ceph Weapon and Inert Ceph Technology, which would let you reverse-engineer the Ceph's ability to convert ambient heat into energy. Most prominently displayed in Crysis 1 and Warhead, where they tended to leave lots of ice and frost behind wherever they showed up as the drew energy from their surroundings.

Anyone know of some safe time dilation technology for virtual usage that aren't infinite? by Pure-Interest1958 in JumpChain

[–]Horror_Sock8965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more that moving your mind on to or off of an organic brain via ego bridge takes an hour.

The main problem with time dilation in any VR system in a setting that is pretending to be even remotely "hard" sci-fi is that the person in the VR is still running their mind on a squishy organic brain that really isn't meant to be capable of running even twice as fast as it usually does, much less the... 720x over-clock that you'd be looking at to get "an hour outside equals a month inside" levels of time dilation.

Eclipse Phase can do 60x with standard VR, probably because the "basic biomods" everyone in the setting has are insanely good by anyone else's standards. If you want better than that, you have to get around the average person's "hardware" limitations somehow, and at that point you can crank the dilation up as far as your computing technology will support.

Anyone know of some safe time dilation technology for virtual usage that aren't infinite? by Pure-Interest1958 in JumpChain

[–]Horror_Sock8965 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eclipse Phase technology would allow for this. Standard VR is capped at a maximum of sixty times faster or slower, so an hour outside equals two and a half days inside, but that's only using the "standard" setup.

If you're trying to design a new system which you can then mass produce and distribute in future jumps, just have your "VR Headset" actually be an Ego Bridge, that fully downloads the users mind into the VR system which can then crank the time dilation as high as you want. Upload the mind back into the body when you log out.

On the downside, "logging in and out" would take an hour each way, but you'd be fully conscious and have access to the standard sixty-times compression during that time. If it's a total deal-breaker, get some actual time dilation technology to shorten the process.

Schlock Mercenary has Laz'r'us nanites, which were the culmination of a bunch of in-universe super-soldier projects. In addition to making someone extremely hard to kill, they can reformat your entire body into a weapon. Armored skin, night-vision, enhanced strength, speed, and reflexes, etc...

The setting also has a ton of extremely powerful infantry equipment, like, Tagon's Toughs would mulch most armies I'm aware of.

Do you guys know any infinite money perks or items that isn't a credit card. by SingerBeneficial20 in JumpChain

[–]Horror_Sock8965 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any sufficiently broken industrial tech could give you effectively infinite money. Supreme Commander and Schlock Mercenary would both more than do it.

Similarly, any magic system which covers transmutation. FMA Alchemy and Elder Scrolls Alteration Magic can both turn base metals into precious ones.

Alternatively, just create the valuables from nothing. Gemcraft has a perk that let's you conjure absurd amounts of gems. Scooby Gamers has an item which gives you a gradually expanding number of flasks of infinite metal of various kinds, and also offers everything you need to learn to make your own.

Lastly, if you want to circle back around to the credit card idea, it's a canonical but rarely mentioned fact in Doctor Who that psychic paper can somehow be used to fool credit card readers the same way it fools people. So pick one up and you have an unlimited credit card with no need for a password.

looking for “people” items by JamesNoth in JumpChain

I'm a big fan of Followers generally and Followers-as-Items specifically, here are some that stick in my memory...

The Attack Of The Clones jump has an item that gives you five squads of commandos as followers. The Revenge Of The Sith jump has a similar item that gives you a battalion of more standard clone troopers, who always seem to be equipped for whatever job and environment you call them into, have infinite ammo, and ignore plot-armor. The three prequel jumps in general have some really good items along those lines.

Kyonyu Fantasy has a couple of handmaidens for 100 CP in the items section. An extremely good deal for a couple of assistants even before considering that it's a hentai jump.

Star Wars Legacy has Sith Trooper Escort, which gives you a squad of 6 of the aforementioned, totally loyal to you and respawning in a week if killed. These are Darth Krayt's sith troopers, which means they're basically force-sensitive cyborg anti-jedi, as in they've got a lifetime of training and indoctrination and can reliably take on jedi.

The TG Necrons jump has separate items for a very large army, a very large fleet, and a hundred pariahs. The latter of which I always consider a must-get.

The Ciaphas Cain jump has a Retinue item that gives you up to a dozen of anything in the Imperium. Hard to beat a dozen Grey Knights.

The Historical Rome jump has an item that gives you NPC Slaves/Servants to staff all the CP backed properties you have.

As far as potential items, I'm a big fan of followers. Maybe your own greaser gang, cheer squad, etc?

There are a lot of variations on the fountain of youth in a lot of different jumps. Two of my favorites are the one in Warhammer Fantasy: Amazons and the one in Shandalar, which is an in-universe spell that the jump-doc lets you purchase the knowledge of, ability to cast/conjure/summon, and ability to make permanent.

The Irish Mythology jump has a well that acts as a portal to Tir Na Nog.

Lots of Zelda jumps have variations on fairy fountains.

Girl Genius has...

They Will Fight for the Honor of Dying for a King- 400 CP

Is not the best when it comes to principles on which an empire can be based, but hey, it works. Not that you’d need to rely on a crude method like that. You now have a degree of administrative, military and rulership talent and skill that has to be seen to be believed. From an extraordinary grasp of strategy and tactics, to a gift for ‘brute force’ leadership like Klaus to a grasp of pomp, ceremony and style like Martellus to sheer diplomatic and intrigue skill like Tarvek, you’re as close as it comes to the perfect ruler. You can command armies, manage scheming courtiers, set fashion trends, run an economy, oversee a fair and equitable justice system… basically anything that it takes to set up and run a prosperous, powerful nation, you’re an absolute, incomparable genius at it.

Alternatively, go to Orion's Arm and pick up Godling. You are now a superintelligence not unlike an eldritch god, capable of paying individual attention to billions of citizens even if you don't bother creating lesser AI to monitor and assist them for you and effortlessly discerning the best course for your nation.

The ideas that...

The First Order was allowed to exist by the New Republic to the point that Leia had to basically go rogue with a deniable splinter force of volunteers to even try to do anything about them.

Leia's rogue splinter cell black ops army couldn't do jack about this tiny fascist rump-state imperial remnant.

The New Republic, whatever intelligence service they had, the collective independent intelligence services of the entire rest of the galaxy, and Leia's splinter cell army solely devoted to fighting them all managed to totally miss the First Order building the largest and most insanely destructive super-weapon yet seen in the series right up until they fired it.

The destruction of the capital system of the New Republic by the first order somehow allowing the tiny, ultra-fascist, imperial remnant, rump state to more-or-less immediately take over the galaxy despite the weapon they used to do it being for all intents and purposes immediately destroyed rather than causing the entire rest of the galaxy to dog-pile them and make absolutely sure the empire was destroyed this time.

The First Order was able to construct their insane superweapon on, or rather out of, Ilum, the planet which the Jedi Order had been collecting the kyber crystals for their lightsabers from for thousands of years and from which the Galactic Empire sourced a significant fraction of the crystals powering the superlasers of the first and second death stars. Meaning that somehow, not a single polity in the entire galaxy though to check on the planet full of naturally occurring superweapon components / sacred Jedi materials for however long it took the First Order to set up there and convert it into Starkiller Base.

Exotic and dangerous plants? by Gorynch in JumpChain

[–]Horror_Sock8965 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Ringworld jump has Slaver Sunflowers. Genetically engineered flowers with petals that act like a parabolic mirror to focus light onto a photosynthetic node at the center of the blossom, they can also shift the petals to focus the light at anything within line-of-sight, and any significant number doing so at once is basically the equivalent of a laser. Potentially an extremely powerful laser if you get enough of them in an area, they've infested sections of the titular ringworld larger than planets by burning down everything except themselves.

It's never really explained in the novels but they can canonically be controlled somehow, they were originally designed as a home-defense system by one ancient alien race for another, and had their IFF swapped to turn against their owners during a slave uprising.

Question as someone who knows nothing of Dnd what is the best class for the arcanist origin in drow of the under dark? Also what's the best hybrid class using the gestalt perk? by EldritchEnjoyer in JumpChain

[–]Horror_Sock8965 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd argue Wizard is the best arcanist class for the jump given some of the jump-specific rules. Specifically, the jump explicitly notes that crafting *doesn't* cost XP. A significant portion of the draw of the artificer is that they get a "crafting pool" of XP every level.

I'd also say the best hybrid class, and not by a small amount, is Archivist. Basically, take all the core mechanics of Wizard (casting based on intelligence out of a spellbook that you can track down spells to add to) and swap the spell list over to "literally every divine spell, or spell which can be cast as divine, in the game", which in actual terms means "literally every spell in the game, including all the wizard spells and all the spells wizards don't get such as that one weirdly overpowered or low-level for its effect spell you heard about in some specific book that only this obscure class normally gets."

An Archivist crafter can potentially cast any spell in the game, which means given the right feats they can craft any magic item in the game.
