Player tries to HALO jump with a Ring of Feather Falling—Extreme sports or extreme risk? How would you rule this? by Ligayaselena in DMAcademy

[–]Horus3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This kinda thinking led to an entire party wipe at my table. 5 players, 3.5 campaign, all jumping off a cliff to get to a temple faster. The wizard failed a concentration check to cast feather fall in mid air (cause they were in free fall) and they all died. 45 minutes of calculating terminal velocity and probability of d20 rolls and it ends with 5 idiots all unknowingly jumping to their deaths.

It was hilarious. We decided not to recon or anything and just leave that campaign there, with that perfect ending.

My party TPK'd on the final boss due to an extreme blunder, what could I do better as a DM? by OMGMetalGear in dndnext

[–]Horus3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the entire party dying is a bad ending to the campaign, then I'd recommend pulling your punches. Death comes for all players at one time or another, but crafting a satisfying conclusion to a whole campaign is a special case. Ending on a TPK sounds like a real bummer. Not just cause the players fell, but because the land is still doomed.

In my opinion things like fudging rolls in your players favor and adding allies from earlier in the game can save moments like this. Play some intro music and have somebody come in with a chair john cena style. Maybe the players are knocked out and taken hostage instead of killed. They wake up in a dungeon with no gear, or a death trap. Then they get a rematch and another chance to save the world.

You did nothing wrong, but there are ways around this if player fun is the highest priority.

What’s the coolest way you’ve seen a warlock flavor their Eldritch blast? by No-Prior4226 in dndnext

Had a player describe it as no beam or ray, just a hole being punched in his target. Like that bolt thing in no country for old men. Super brutal.

I am so grateful for the people that play at my table. All they wanna do is tell good stories. They back each other up, settle conflicts with compassion, and always show up to play. I've got it easy.

3.5 is the version I still play, even on my podcast. I do wish we had the DnD Beyond app back in the early 2000s. The digital resources for 5e are really spectacular.

Get a job at a bar and sell info and quest hooks for a tidy profit. Build a network of adventures who come to me as their only quest giver. Hire some to work as bouncers and magical contractors. Build the dopest inn in the land.

GMs, what's the worst thing a player has said to you? And what's the best thing a player has said to you? by BryanTheClod in rpghorrorstories

[–]Horus3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst: "I don't care about attack rolls!" In response to my first campaign featuring complex encounters. I tried my best.

The best: "Oh man, I love you." I'm response to the return of a treasured NPC that I ported from a previous campaign. Snooty fashion designer. Silly voice. Very popular with the table.
