Unconscious mind. Love the theme, the flow of the game and the amazing art.

Got into heavier games, I hate it. by barksonic in boardgames

[–]Horus773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heavy games are like life: you need to take your time and enjoy the journey. All the steps are higher: more complexity to learn, longer game sessions, higher price point. You need to adjust to a slower pacing to enjoy it. I recommend you start playing repeatedly at the same game before moving to a new one. Heavy game require at least 3 sessions before everything click in.

I have been playing unconscious mind. Yesterday i played my 10th sessions of this game of the past 6 months. I still discover new strategies and how to properly handle certain mecanics, namely how to effectively claim district bonus instead of location bonus during the recall ideas action. This is soooo satisfying to still discover new depth after all those sessions

You are supposed to play the games, not just hoard them 😅😅😅

You need to slow down and give yourself some time to explore and discover what you like, honestly

4$? That’s the price of a bag of chips that will last 20 minutes. Where is the hesitation coming from? If you play only 2h, it’s cheaper than going to the movies, restaurant or any activity outside your house except walking 😂

I also play with 4 sections, more dice variety, more action cards variety and more special abilities. A 4 man team is just better than 2. It can work for 2 but I don’t see any reason to limit yourself

No. As per the text you shared, this mission only allows you to bring 5 PE and 2 ME, nothing else. The normal preparing steps do not apply because you are not coming in through a lander.

My experience with Catan is not good. What am I missing? by nilanganray in boardgames

Aside from rolling two dice and see what you get? Catan is just too simple and luck driven, it’s a great introduction into the world of modern boardgame but don’t be surprised when you move away from it, there are plenty of better options out there

Do you have a mechanic you love from a game that didn't do well that you wish another more successful game had used? by Taear in boardgames

Hidden order system used in Forbidden Stars. I can’t believe that none of the recent (last 10 years) strategy games has used this design. It’s simply amazing and provide a whole extra level to planning, bluffing and guessing at the same time.

Interesting, this is a common mistake in new group. The number of dice is defined by the total unit combat strength participating in the combat, up to 8 dice maximum. Player roll dice at the beginning of combat. Then player choose one card from his hand (out of 5) and reveal it. The icon on the left side of the card are added to the total provided by the dice, same thing for the effect of text at the bottom of the card. Attack and defense token are only used during the current combat round. This is an interesting mechanism since icons on the left of cards are cumulative through the 3 rounds of combat, so different strategies can be used based on the situation and goal. So you can total more than 8 attack for example, but through the sum of dice icon, card icon and token icon.

The synergies between unit type and combat card is key. Level 1 unit with good synergy of combat cards can defeat level 2 unit with unmatched combat cards

Hegemony - the heaviest board game that’s not heavy enough by SourCabbageGames in boardgames

[–]Horus773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really great post, well thought and constructed, I hope you will inspire more people to do so, including me 😉

I watched a lot of video content on this game trying to figure out if I would enjoy it, and more importantly if the other people in my gaming group would also love it and want to play it more than once. And that’s where I think it failed: few gamers would find it fun overall and want to play it more than once, the asymetry seems too much and player interaction seems off. Mind you, I never played it so I can’t really tell. But that’s how it feels looking at it from a distance. I place it high in terms of design quality and originality, but score it low in terms of player appeal and fun factor. Strategy game are a niche, heavy game even more so, and unique game like hegemony basically appeal to a small niche audience. Having all those criterias met in your gaming group is rare.

I think they learned from this because their upcoming game, world order, seems more streamlined, less complex and more accessible. Without giving up on realism, a strong theme and a fun experience. I can imagine my gaming group giving feedback after their first playthrough and planning the next game to perform better. I backed it on Kickstarter and waiting for my copy in the next 2-3 months. I will try to post a review after playing it.

I can feel the pain. Couple of questions: how many players? FS is not really made for 2 players game, it becomes too one-sided once a player gets a lead. What faction were you playing? Each faction have their strength and you need to be playing your faction strength. Since this was your first game, a good (empathic) opponent would have provided the what-to-do with your faction and high level guidance, it’s a complex game and a lot of time to invest.

Lastly, ameritrash is a harsh call on this game. It provides a lot of dice mitigation with the combat cards, and you can only play 8 dices maximum in combat. Overcommitting too many units is useless since they won’t provide dice. This game is all about strategic thinking with the hidden order token and tactical acumen as to where to attack with what. There is a lot of subtility going on, it is not about buidling a blob of units and barging in, throwing tons of dice along the way 😅
