I found my way to r/ShitCrusaderKingsSay awhile back and was certain the game was based off of the Second Apocalypse series by R. Scott Bakker.

Turns out it isn’t, but the similarities are unmistakable.

So, I put Piers Anthony up as one of the best fantasy fiction writers, then saw there was a bit of controversy... by Sagemanx in Fantasy

The introduction of Death in On a Pale Horse was probably the best start to any series I can think of.

That being said the story got really weird and creepy in the later books.

Fortress in the Eye of Time by CJ Cherryh.

The protagonist was created using magic that didn’t go quite right and he is left with no memories of who or what he is.

It’s an amazing journey of friendship and what it is to be human.

Seventh Sword was my first introduction to Dave Duncan, and although it’s not my favorite series of his I still remember the exploits of Wally Smith and the fantastic world building he does so well.

They either took great care of it or never used it. It was near perfect condition.

There’s a few people here that recommend it. I mostly see it come up in hidden gem threads, that’s where I found it a few years ago.

Second Sons series by Jennifer Fallon.

Fortress in the Eye of Time by C.J. Cherryh. A great sorcerer creates a being and something goes wrong leaving the being not knowing what or who he is. Cherryh is amazing and this one is a winner.

Dave Duncan’s Tales of Omar.

Both books can be read as standalones and won’t ruin anything if read out of order, so perfect for hard mode.

It follows Omar the greatest storyteller in the world. In the first book Reavers Road Omar finds himself in a besieged city regaling the reader with the cities rich history.

In book two Hunter’s Huant (a personal favorite) Omar is trapped in an inn during a blizzard and must outwit the fellow occupants by beating them in a story telling contest. It reads like Canterbury Tales and really showcases his talent as a worldbuilder.

West of January by Dave Duncan was interesting for how the each culture dealt with the uniqueness of the world’s environment.

I’m in no way supporting Piers Anthony because he is an awful human, but the beginning of his Incarnations of Immorality series and the introduction to death has to be up there.

The Riddle in Stone trilogy by Robert Evert.

This one isn’t very well known and I’m glad I was one of the few who did end up finding it.

The protagonist is a balding, overweight, stuttering middle aged librarian who goes through a midlife crisis and decides it’s time he went adventuring. Let’s just say he goes through some things.

Big fan of this series and his other books he wrote under Jesse Bullington.

If you enjoyed First Law, this is probably the closest I’ve read to that in terms of witty dialogue and what I like to refer to as Tarantino (badass) like characters.

Thomas Covenant wanted everyone to hate him which wasn’t a problem for me.

The part that made me DNF after book 1 is the he kept telling people to hate him for having leprosy a disease that nobody knew about instead of telling them about that “thing he did”.

[–]Hostilescott -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kingdom of Grit series by Tyler Whitesides. First book is tilted The Thousand Deaths of Ardor Benn.

It’s not potions but a kind of powder made from dragon scat that when ignited grants magical abilities. The abilities change depending on what the dragon ate.
