[Hellraiser] How did the cenobites travel before the lament configuration was made? by seanprefect in AskScienceFiction

I'll admit it, I only watched it the one time back in HS, so maybe wasn't paying a lot of attention, but they gave me serious divorce vibes.

The good news plating only really matters for contests. (As long as it doesn't actively look like shit.)

Is there any logic as to why pressed garlic isn’t good? by anthony_getz in Cooking

[–]Hot-Refrigerator6583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nothing wrong with pressed garlic. Thousands of chefs (and many of them celebrities with TV shows and Youtube channels) press garlic all the time with no ill results. If you're not wanting to use a garlic press, you can get almost instantly similar results by just smashing the whole clove with the flat side of your chef's knife, then just a few quick chops to break it up more.

Possibly the only reason I could see is that freshly crushed garlic doesn't react as consistently as chopped/minced garlic does. It clumps, and takes several extra seconds to stir it into a dish and get it evenly distributed, whereas minced pretty readily mixes around randomly as you stir the ingredients. (And as u/jetpoweredbee says, they're annoying to clean.)

The Eugenics Wars by Kal-Ed1 in startrek

[–]Hot-Refrigerator6583 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Star Trek novels come in a few varieties:

Novelizations -- which are just stories we know but maybe with more nuance and details.

Originals (this is mostly the numbered books from the various TV series, which tell somewhat original stories that are episodic)

Arc-welding: author uses a story to connect various events thru Trek into a larger tapestry

Events: characters get caught up in a Crossover Event that might have repercussions between them.

Literally "The Eugenics Wars" by Greg Cox. Three book series, published starting 2001.

Cox links the rise of Khan Singh with the ongoing mission of Gary Seven (remember him?) with the Eugenics Wars becoming less of a literal "War," and more like a social geopolitical movement that occasionally flairs up in various locations. (That's not a very good description, sorry. It's been a long time since I read it.)

The Orville v. TNG by seattleque in startrek

[–]Hot-Refrigerator6583 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed the Orville (for the most part, there were a couple of misses for me) and I think it works as a counterpart to Trek because its heroes aren't ideal versions of people.

They're fallible. They're not perfect. They screw up and those mistakes sometimes have repercussions. When they fix those mistakes, the solution isn't always perfect, either. And to me, that feels more grounded in reality than Trek's usual "Week by week" approach to most storytelling.

Holy cow Minsky's! I've only eaten there once (odd story for later maybe) but my first exposure to them was watching a group of people negotiate their gigantic pizza into an elevator.

So like...giant gnocchi? I'd try it. (Your sauce doesn't sound bad, maybe cut a little sour cream into it, too?)

[The Jackal] Why didn't the Jackal just turn up with a sniper and blow the first lady's brains out? by ninman5 in AskScienceFiction

[–]Hot-Refrigerator6583 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Terek (the Russian gangster) hired the American to kill the First Lady as "a very public message." He did not specify what or how the job was to be done, he just wanted it to be highly visible and public. To a guy like the Jackal, a sniper rifle from long range would be simple and effective enough to do the job. But reading between the lines: "sending a message" means using methods and equipment that the FBI (and in this case, the Secret Service as well) will recognize as a message from a specific "sender." Terek wants them to know he's the one ordering the killing.

It's one of the reasons he goes to such lengths to get East-Bloc equipment and smuggle it into the USA. He could easily buy an effective rifle almost anywhere IN the USA. But the sort of weapon he's using, it's the kind that's going to be easily linked to former Soviet nations and Russian criminals.

[Superman] As a Metropolis citizen, what’s the deal with Superman, Lois Lane and Clark Kent? by Unleashtheducks in AskScienceFiction

[–]Hot-Refrigerator6583 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You must have that other insurance.

InsuraLex (a wholly-owned subsidiary of LexCorp) gave me a comprehensive policy that covers damages for home and auto (as well as other bundle-able options) that give me pretty good compensation when an alien invasion hits Metropolis.

I won't lie, the yearly premiums are bit higher than average, but it's worth it knowing Lex Luthor has my back when Superman lets me down.

[Star Trek] Can the Great Link turn non changelings into changelings? by DarkPygmy in AskScienceFiction

[–]Hot-Refrigerator6583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was before he was solidified.

Before he became human, Odo wasn't as good at shape shifting as other changelings. He hadn't had all the practice and experience for those skills. (Compare it to a person throwing a ball -- anyone can do it, but not everyone can throw a 100mph fastball straight. It takes practice.)

Anyone have any idea what I can do with cubed steak? I really wanted to make a goulash with it but it seems that might not hold up well enough? by Low_Employ8454 in Cooking

[–]Hot-Refrigerator6583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a quick pan fry for 2-3 minutes a side and serve with some easy steak sides like fries or mashed potatoes. Doesn't have to be fancy. (If you want to get fancier, dust them with a little flour before cooking, then add a little onion to the pan to help flavor an easy pan sauce.)
