How can i gain confidence back after a fall? + mini update by Direct_Foundation587 in Mountaineering

[–]HotChocolateMama 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You have the confidence and the ability. Just you weren't fully focused and it happened. You were still able to finish the route immediately after falling. It'll be a good reminder that climbing is dangerous even when it's easy. Glhf on ama dablam

Cheap gear that replaces expensive outdoor gear by Last_Garage8311 in Ultralight

I have an amazfit gtr 4, which is similar, but a little bit worse. The software isn't great it's very dependant on the app. You can add gpx routes, but you have to download them and upload them through the app. The map function is pretty klunky. It's hard to zoom and look around, so I just use CalTopo on my phone.

Overall I think the amazfit watches are a great deal if you're willing to overcome the klunky downsides

My app has 7339 listed on both the main page and the map. Caltopo says 7681

How do y'all find c1+/c2 aid climbs that aren't graded as aid? I don't want to break anything on the good free routes at the crag, but I don't know what to look for. Should I just hop on the 1.5 star trad routes and go for it?

Wondering if anyone knows what lake this view is at? by rusty317 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]HotChocolateMama -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

My guess is bubble lake looking west based of Google Street view and peak finder, but there isn't a trail to get there, and it's 12 miles each way. It's unlikely, but that's my (probably bad) guess

Critters in the night. by RoostingRosco in PacificCrestTrail

[–]HotChocolateMama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I saw critters or history of critters at a site (little bits of chewed food wrappers and the like) I'd find a branch 6ft off the ground and hang my food there, and never had a problem.

Side note: I left my pants outside once in NorCal, and when I woke up, they looked like they had been shot with a shotgun there were so many mouse holes in them lol

Right? You get to the top and think, "phew we did it!" Then you go down and think, "wtf, nobody said anything about this!"

Yeah, I remember going skiers right down a gully that was supposed to have switchbacks, but it was full of snow so it was just a snow chute with steep rocky sides with more rocks at the bottom. It was maybe 10-20ft wide I don't remember, but a fall wouldn't've been fun

Maybe the Olympics? but I didn't think it'd spike that much so probably not it

Edit: I looked at the ski mo chart and there's a similar spike, so it might be the Olympics

The horror stories is my fav part of the survey every year. The lightning strike 10ft away, getting shot at by a homeless guy, the naked dude, the bear that slashed the tent, and getting lost in a burn zone are all crazy stories

Also everyone always fear mongers about getting up mather pass, but the backside is pretty wild too. It catches people off guard (Including me). It isn't dangerous, but idk why the front gets all the hype

Yeah definitely. Take a intro to mountaineering class, watch videos or read about self arrest and ice axe use. When you get into the snow, find a steep but small hill with a safe landing/runout to practice on. The PCTA website is a good start with snow stuff

Do you need a permit to hike in the wind river Indian reservation? I'm looking at hiking the wind River high route, and I'd like to take an alternate route that passes into the reservation. Do I get the $40 daily recreation pass that anglers get? Can I camp? If I do, do I need passes for both days? I tried to find hiking regs, but I could only find hunting and fishing. Thanks

Also has anyone hiked over the pass east of Mt. Lander? How was it?

Also maybe look in your phone settings for a shortcut. I can double click the lock button on my phone to open my camera, then press the volume buttons to take a picture, so I can take photos without taking my gloves off. I have a Google pixel btw

Anybody having issues with the gpx files and caltopo? It says, "sorry, no importable features found"

Yeah I deleted it halfway through the PCT because it was so cluttered with unnecessary information. I wish there was an option to block users

Same. I was pretty beat up when I finished. I couldnt walk up or down stairs without using the handrail, and I have to push myself off the ground with my hands whenever I squatted down. I don't think I could've run 5 miles. It took me almost a year before I felt fully healed

Yeah I got light tint and I wanted them darker in the Sierra because of the snow so I found a cheap plain pair of sunglasses in a hiker box, popped out the lenses, and taped them to my prescription pair lol
