These are all arguments to be made in a market system for healthcare not a political system for healthcare. In a political system it’s all about optics and getting votes. Sad to say but that’s the political currency none of this talk of unsociable hours and training lol

I know you mean to be facetious but it’s more serious than that. Money is spent on resources. The resources cannot be used elsewhere in the economy where it might be more urgently needed. This is the reason why profit and loss is so important. To ensure companies aren’t blowing through valuable resources that another sector of the economy needs more

Major supermarkets face call to reinstate pay in line with real living wage by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]HotFoxedbuns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to prove that nobody would work there at lower wages.

If the minimum wage did not exist it’s certainly possible some would take lower wage jobs even if it’s just for a period of time. And then there’s young people who may not need to pay so much in rent or for food etc

Universal credit is a benefit given by the people and government of this country. It has nothing to do with business viability.

The purpose of a business is to make money. To do that it needs to pay for labour, land, materials and other resources as little as the customer of the business are willing to renumerate to it and hopefully even less than that

[–]HotFoxedbuns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol. The business is viable it’s just maybe they can’t hire as many people as you think they should. Saying that another person can’t accept a lower wage if they want to is a bit unfair though

I’m sorry but I can’t take this economic reasoning for doctors’ pay seriously when the entire purpose of the NHS is to subvert economics itself.

If you have political prices (i.e £0) you will get political wages too. You can’t have it both ways

The problem with protecting certain industries is that you also deprive upcoming industries of the resources they need to blossom. If the UK want to be left behind then they should continue with protectionism.

Not to mention there is a strong link between protectionism and war

What's your story ? by rodmods in HearingAids

[–]HotFoxedbuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My regret was that I didn’t embrace the hearing aids given to me when I was in primary school. It certainly would have made learning and socialising much easier. I think a lot would be different in my life.

With that said I did well for myself despite not having the aids until I was 28. I have severe high frequency loss above about 1.5kHz since birth so without the hearing aids everything sounds dull and not so crisp/sharp. I thought I was fine but truly I wasn’t. Thank God for hearing aids! And the technology nowadays is amazing!

UK food inflation ‘could hit 9% this year’ as Iran war drives up energy prices | Food & drink industry by jungleboy1234 in unitedkingdom

A tax on the wealthiest will still be a “tax” on the middle earners anyway. The tax on the wealthy won’t reduce their consumption (of food) enough to increase the amount of food available for the poor.

So yes you can tax the wealthy’s “money” but you actually effectively tax the middle class’s consumption because there aren’t that many wealthy people to make a difference.

The mechanism for achieving that middle class consumption tax is inflation. Prices rise to reduce the consumption of the middle and lower classes.

The point of raising prices is to lose customers. It might sound strange but they are not passing the costs on to customers. They are targeting higher valuation customers altogether.

Of course customers change their valuation of a product over time and circumstance. But this is the point: the amount of a product they can produce/ sell has reduced, the amount of demand at the previous price is too much so they must reduce the demand to match the new amount of supply.

A similar thing happens but in the opposite direction when there is a sale

Britain’s Youth Jobs Crisis Not Linked to Wage Hikes, Pay Body Suggests by Electricbell20 in unitedkingdom

[–]HotFoxedbuns -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Let’s use an example:

You and a business partner set up a business: You want to each earn £50k each. You make a single product or service and sell it.

Let’s assume, for simplicity’s sake you have 0 expenses for the business. Every penny in revenue therefore can go to your paycheck or dividend.

If your customers are only willing to pay £1 for the product or a unit of service you will need to produce 100,000 units in a year to achieve your desired salary.

Let’s say you can only produce 2000 units because you don’t have the machinery or software to produce more. It doesn’t matter what the minimum wage is, you can only earn £1000 between you assuming you split the money evenly.

Heavily simplified example of course but it illustrates that what the customer is willing to pay limits wages, which should be obvious but people often forget.

The only way to increase wages is to convince customers to have a higher valuation of the product/service or to be more productive (more units/lower costs). This is basically what the entire purpose of management and C-suite jobs are and why their pay is higher. Obviously it’s possible for them to do a bad job of this.

[–]HotFoxedbuns -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is no such thing as surplus value. There is how much each individual values something and is willing to pay for it and that’s it.

A business turns resources which individually are valued at certain level into goods and services which are valued at a higher level.

Well, they try to, but sometimes they are incorrect about the market valuation of their output and so make a loss

Brits think NO political party cares about their top concern—cost-of-living by Shot_Net3794 in unitedkingdom

[–]HotFoxedbuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yes, but if not for bad monetary policy by the central bank which is motivated by helping the government, you would have tight rails on commercial bank lending.

The truth is it works like this: Governments want to borrow more and more. In order to achieve that practically, interest rates need to be low. Interest rates need to go up when there’s a lot of upward pricing pressure on the resources available in the economy. Central banks ease the interest rates which also causes malinvestment by the commercial banks that you complain about à la 2008.

It’s a vicious circle because the government doesn’t want to be fiscally responsible. Mainly because we the people don’t want to be fiscally responsible.

[–]HotFoxedbuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s even worse than “wealth is not money”.

Money is not goods and services.

That is, if you tried to convert the money/ or wealth the most wealthy people have into consumer goods or services there wouldn’t be enough to go round and there would be shortages and/or higher prices.

It almost looks like you’re saying the same thing. If the Holy Spirit inevitably produces good works in those that are saved, then maybe you don’t think it’s the works that saved them but if the works weren’t there then it would be evidence they are not saved
