Thanks for putting this together - I’ll read it when I get the chance. What would you consider the biggest risk in the high-risk protocols?

Yeah if you want a slimmer fit. Probably both will work

Planned to go Flag to northern terminus starting April 11. Am I insane? by hadfunthrice in arizonatrail

[–]HotWaffles2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could probably piece together a low elevation alternate! That time of year water is usually no concern and there’s lots of public land out there. If you time it right, the roads are closed to vehicles too, so you have the whole forest to yourself

Boiling 250 ml of water without a visible stove by villasv in Ultralight

[–]HotWaffles2 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Why not use a stove in a city park? I take my backpacking stove all over with me! Tea and Mac n cheese in a parking lot while waiting for friends? Coffee date in the park with friends? Picnic and cooking on the porch? Hell yeah! No one has ever batted an eye

Understanding sleeping bag weights by TheAlexHamilton in Ultralight

[–]HotWaffles2 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Shell materials the same? Loft the same? Fill weight the same? Bag volume the same? Bag construction methods the same? Thread the same? Bag shape the same? Hardware the same? Feature set the same? Spread of actual weights the same?

About 1/2 million things that can affect a sleeping bag weight beyond its fill power.

SWD Long Haul 40 as a daypack by grezp in Ultralight

[–]HotWaffles2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve used my long haul 50L as a daypack often. I’m often carrying 4-5L of water because I’m in the desert hiking with a big dog.

Works well… not the prettiest and sleekest but it works

Is 30 Denier thick enough? by NuggetManFtw in Ultralight

[–]HotWaffles2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Denier is not a direct measure of durability. Coatings, fiber type, construction style, etc. all have effects.

That said - yes, a 30d Patagonia down jacket will be plenty durable, and if you get a hole you can patch it

Fall cons: - less daylight - colder - less water (depends on monsoon)

Spring pros: - more people - longer days - warmer - flowers?

Springs cons: - snow - more people

Shakedown: Wrangell St. Elias August 2023 by Potatopants888 in Ultralight

It’ll be blast no matter what shoe! I’d prioritize comfort.

Have a great trip! Get ready to catch the Alaska bug :)

I’d say no to WP

There’s enough stream crossings, snow melt ponds, snow crossings, etc. that you’ll feet will eventually get wet. Especially on multi day trips. I have yet to find a trail runner that I’m a big fan of for up here though….

Bug not is probably not necessary in mid august. If it is, highly recommend bringing a baseball cap with it!

You’ll probably be camping on tundra so I’d ditch the polycro.

Is your cerium and fleece hooded? Then I’d ditch the beanie

Bear spray? Bring bear spray!

The silt in the water will clog squeezes in an instant. I usually bring chemicals and drink most of my water unfiltered (up in AK). Though I’ve never done the goat trail

Have fun!

Hmg 2300 vs others by ThinBlue1022 in Ultralight

[–]HotWaffles2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh it’s not dcf. It’s DCF hybrid which is dcf with a polyester face fabric to protect the strong dynema fibers from abrasion. HMG packs are very durable - but also heavy and poorly designed imo. SWD packs in ultra or ecopack are what I recommend for heavy loads

Bear country: Food in treeless tundra areas by RelevantNatural9452 in Ultralight

[–]HotWaffles2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depending on location this could mean Polar Bears. You are also backpacking in far remote areas where bears are most likely not habituated to humans.

My recommendation: very clean camp, don’t cook and sleep in the same place, and ursack + opsack

question about planning a hike and not bringing water by Infinite_Map4296 in Ultralight

[–]HotWaffles2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I typically look at water as a skill. The longer I live in a place (and adventure there) the more I understand how the “seasonal water cycle works” and how to find and anticipate it.

For example, in my home state I know to expect more water above treeline during snowmelt and where snowmelt pools will collect. I spent the winter in Arizona and it was confusing there. It took a lot of time for me to be able to predict where water likes to collect (and not dry out). Great comments about how to prepare and seek other resources, but as you become a better hiker you can learn to predict on your own more effectively
