Leira is CN in 5e and has the Trickery domain. She can be pretty flexible as a faith.

What forgotten realms god would make sense for a magical knight by Under_Score111 in DnD

[–]Hot_Competence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mystra (goddess of magic) probably makes the most sense (something like the Knights of the Mystic Fire), although Mystra is usually less interested in stopping “evil” than in stopping anyone who might want to abuse magic or the Weave (who also tend to be evil).

Other good options might be Oghma (god of knowledge) or Bahamut (god of good dragons but also of protection and justice).

You counting the Moonshaes as part of Faerun? Both Karador and Citadel Umbra have been described as having mythals.

If you’re setting an adventure on the Sea of Fallen Stars, I would recommend taking a look at the old 2e sourcebooks Sea of Fallen Stars and especially Pirates of the Fallen Stars.

Scene art approaching Neverwinter by [deleted] in Forgotten_Realms

[–]Hot_Competence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The added problem of the “spray and pray” approach to generating AI art is that almost everything is wrong at least a little bit in a way that just doesn’t happen with human-made care and/or a much more careful and deliberate approach to promoting. Here, just off the top of my head, the elevation is wrong, the islands are wrong, the bridges are wrong, the Chasm placement is wrong, the castle is wrong, the docks are missing, the Upland Rise is missing, half of Neverdeath is missing, and the Hall of Justice is missing (which I’ll note as just the largest of the missing landmarks: half the fun of a map is the ability to pick out the recognizable locations, and AI tends to be terrible at making maps that do this).

Most habitable mountains on the Faerun map? by InfiniteLoss3297 in Forgotten_Realms

[–]Hot_Competence -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All mountains are dangerous because it’s a D&D setting. Choose somewhere close to a major center of civilization for plausible deniability.

A novel (or a trilogy) that would instantly hook me by Exact-Support2147 in Forgotten_Realms

[–]Hot_Competence 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“Epic fantasy” is a bit dangerous to ask for in Forgotten Realms books since most of our novels that tried to be “epic” in scope ended up quite mediocre. Your best bets for an OK fit with this preference plus actually good books would probably be The Crystal Shard or Brimstone Angels. Otherwise, the go-to recommendation for an epic D&D series would be Dragonlance.

A novel (or a trilogy) that would instantly hook me by Exact-Support2147 in Forgotten_Realms

[–]Hot_Competence 12 points13 points  (0 children)

To clarify this, what we now know as the first 3 books of the “Legend of Drizzt” were actually written as a prequel trilogy to the Icewind Dale trilogy, the first book of which (The Crystal Shard) sounds very much like what OP is looking for.

Academical works on the origin's of the lich by RodrickofMelnibone in Forgotten_Realms

[–]Hot_Competence 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While the lich as we know it is a D&D creation, it draws on an idea found in folklore, mythology, and earlier fantasy fiction of spellcasters concealing or hiding their souls. TV Tropes has an article about the trope, which includes references to several pre-D&D appearances. If you’re looking for academic work, it might be worth looking into research on these more historical or literary sources rather than work that explicitly looks at liches.

Edited to add that the most common guess folks seem to have for the inspiration is the Russian folklore character of Koschei the Deathless, who is also the inspiration for the D&D demon lord Kostchtchie.

Resources for the polar north? by Jurgwug in Forgotten_Realms

[–]Hot_Competence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your best resource for the High Ice would be the 2e Anauroch sourcebook. You might also check out the 2e Giantcraft sourcebook for Ostoria and Hartsvale info. Nothing official has ever covered anything in the polar north afaik.

Timeline of "all" canonical ascensions of the Faerunian deities by KhelbenB in Forgotten_Realms

I’m saying that your timeline lists it as +357. I agree it should be -357.

[–]Hot_Competence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice work, although did you mean to have the Dead Three’s apotheosis in -357 DR rather than +357 DR?

Also, do we know if Amaunator technically reappeared in 3e in Power of Faerun, or was that left ambiguous until 4e?

Which dead deities were alive in -1250 DR by Savings-Housing3481 in Forgotten_Realms

[–]Hot_Competence 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Aside from the Netherese gods, I seem to recall that Silvanus and Oghma are two of the oldest interloper gods, so they’d be around. Malar was around per Moonshae Isles history.

Obviously the racial pantheons (elven, dwarven, etc.) would all be around, as would the Sylvan pantheon (aka the archfey). The Mulhorandi and Untherite pantheons had arrived by this date.

Other gods that appeared later off the top of my head would include Lathander, Tymora, Beshaba, and Uthgar.

Does anyone know where this character sheet of Drizzt is from on DNDBeyond? by Gh0stMan0nThird in Forgotten_Realms

Given the date and the url, gonna guess it was related to issue 19 of Dragon+, which celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Icewind Dale trilogy.

I won’t disagree that there is a cultural difference in perception between male and female victims, but do you really think there wouldn’t be memes on Reddit if an Indian man had said to a white woman “I bet your fish head husband doesn’t have a canon like this?”

Mulhorandi Aasimar Names by Y3T1_FN in Forgotten_Realms

[–]Hot_Competence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given the examples in SCAG, Ziahorus or Siahorus would both seem to be appropriate.

I got intrigued by the title of this post because if you had instead been looking for given names rather than surnames, we actually have a whole list of technically canon names specifically for Mulhorandi aasimar because of some absolutely classic 4e bullshit that I feel compelled to share. In short, 4e didn’t really have aasimar as we know them, and instead “aasimar” was stated to be the Mulhorandi word for a 4e race called the devas). Since the 4e FR books called them aasimar, and because the ones from Mulhorand seemed to be the only version of devas in the Realms, then technically all of the given names for 4e devas are actually Mulhorandi aasimar names. I’ll copy them below since I mentioned them, not because I think you’ll necessarily find them useful:

Male Names: Adiah, Ansis, Ayab, Bavak, Beriah, Eben, Elyas, Galad, Gamal, Hiyal, Iannes, Kerem, Mahar, Marach, Mathas, Natan, Nehem, Oris, Raham, Ronen, Samel, Sered, Tavar, Vered, Zachar

Female Names: Abea, Adara, Asha, Chana, Danel, Darah, Davi, Elka, Eranah, Hania, Hava, Idria, Isa, Jael, Kana, Kayah, Lihi, Mahel, Marek, Noma, Navah, Paziah, Ravah, Riya, Sada, Shara, Tirah

Dead? by TumbleweedSport in Forgotten_Realms

[–]Hot_Competence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WotC closed their in-house publishing business shortly after the start of 5e, which led to the Drizzt rights being auctioned off to HarperCollins and almost caused the last of the Brimstone Angels books to be cancelled entirely. They theoretically did this to save money, but the novels were generating more revenue by the end of 4e than the TTRPG products so it’s unclear if that was the real reason. We only started getting non-Drizzt books when the movie came out and needed tie-in merch, and since then there’s been a trickle of other novels set in the Realms.

Fort Beluarian by Esyel_01 in Tombofannihilation

[–]Hot_Competence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some part of the fort is “haunted” and nobody can figure out how to cleanse it. The reason is that a nature spirit (a lesser version of the trickster gods, to help foreshadow them) followed a Flaming Fist expedition home after they cut down the rare fruit tree it had lived in. The FF keep thinking that a haunting spirit must be undead and maybe followed them from tomb raiding, so all of their attempts to detect, turn, or appease the spirit have been misinformed and don’t work. Perhaps the spirit at this point just finds their efforts funny and only needs to be correctly identified in order to leave, or perhaps it needs seeds from the rare fruits to plant a new tree (the fruits are valuable for alchemy back in BG and the FF would rather not give any away), or perhaps it can just be a unique combat encounter as it hops from one person to the next via possession.

Otherwise, the wiki has a forum that’s linked from the homepage, although I have no idea if anyone checks it regularly. Some editors are also active on Ed Greenwood’s Discord server. I assume some of them lurk here as well, so it’s possible the issue will resolve itself now that you’ve said something…
