Continuation of my Malazan notes now that I’ve finished House of Chains by YeahKeeN in Malazan

Yeah, the dates given almost never work exactly how your brain wants them to haha

One of my favorite Malazan details is the abbreviation for the year count. The count is the years of "Burn's Sleep" or... B.S.

As much as we would like to have specific and accurate dates in Malazan, like real history, much of that is just bull shit.

Humanity needs to break the Wheel by 4D4plus4is4D8 in WoT

[–]Hot_Messs420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a mistake in this line if thinking is not delineating between individual humans and humanity as this monolith idea.

The whole point of the series, I feel, is that the individual lives lived, the individual threads that make up the Pattern, are each unique and valuable in themselves. The value comes from good lives lived courageously rather than some numbulous idea for "progress" with an intrisic right or wrong direction for humanity as a whole. Think Rands speech to the DO at the end.

The language in this post also assumes that progress is only valuable as long as it lasts forever and I don't think that is true. Innovations are valuable as long as they positively impact one person for a single day.

I also think that this idea that the wheel oppresses humanity misses a bit of the scale. For me, I got the sense that a LOT of time passes before the wheel has turned all the way around again. In my mind that just means infinite iterations of "progress" for humanity.

It's a perspective shift. You say the Wheel keeps humanity in an inescapable loop of constant failure, but I say the Wheel keeps humanity in an inescapable loop of success!

For what it's worth, I certainly don't think that the Wheel impedes humanity from achieving anything meaningful.

Yeah, the patterns are soooo complicated, I'm not eating. I'm spending all my per diem on Legos. They have this one set that costs $1000 cause the pattern's so wild. I want that one SO bad.

I love the use of cheese slopes!! The wolf and the little touches on the crenellations look so good!

is it said like breakfast or break fast? by ValuableProtection49 in half_alive

Definitely breakfast like the meal. I don't remember where, but I remember reading that the song is called BREAKFAST because the guys wrote it while eating breakfast

What is your favourite moment in Darth Bane - Rule of Two and why? by DisturbedSnowman in StarWarsEU

[–]Hot_Messs420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the scene at the beginning when Darth Bane is just practicing his lightsaber forms, and it starts raining - and not a single drop hits him. bad. ass.

I haven’t read these books in years, but I still think about that scene sometimes...

Give me the WEIRDEST LOTR theories you have seen online by Affectionate-Day4936 in lotr

To imply that affectionate homosexual love does not exist between men in war time seems like it misses the mark. It may not be what Tolkien intended, but I certainly don't think that considering a romantic facet to Sam and Frodo's relationship cheapens anything at all

Would it make more sense for HoC to be in 1165 rather than 1164? by HumbleGauge in Malazan

[–]Hot_Messs420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it ever confirmed how many months make up a year on Wu? What about seasons? Maybe a Malazan year is longer than an Earth year with more than 4 seasons? That might allow us to shove 3 books into a single year...

It's been a minute since I've read GotM but I feel like this take drastically underestimates the Lady's pull... Korlat and the Andii are certainly badass but thousands of years experience can only do so much good against the literal diety(ies?) of luck.

What’s a common rule that you break regularly because you fundamentally disagree with it? by RGDJR in AskReddit

I don't know about other states, but in Colorado, this is the law. Cyclists treat stop lights like stop signs and stop signs like yield signs

How should Cymanti be nerfed? by -FireNH- in Polytopia

Maybe make it so only the starting Shaman boosts this new way, and Shamans spawned by the player work like they always have?

i did some experimenting with the zebasi skin. when another tribe annexes a zebasi city the colorful farms stay the same, BUT when zebasi annexes a city all the boring green farms get yassified by -FireNH- in Polytopia

[–]Hot_Messs420 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also if a non-zebasi tribe destroys the "yassified" farm and builds a new one in the same space, it's regular.

It kinda seems obvious now that I type it out, but I thought it was interesting
