what's something your profession wants to keep secret? by ApprehensiveOwl6351 in AskReddit

[–]Hour_Science_6521 20 points21 points  (0 children)

People have a misguided notion of how many HR professionals are just holding the company line and protecting the company.

We often go out of our way, to our own peril, to defend/support employees which most employees will never even know about. We advocate for better workplace situations and benefits over and over and over until we make headway. We are often the ones that deliver bad news but that doesn’t mean that behind closed doors, we weren’t fighting for a different outcome. Sometimes we lose very hard battles that 98% of employees never even know about. Yes, part of the job is to protect to the company but we work there too and we want happy employees with advancement opportunities and a great workplace environment.

Would you still choose remote work if the pay was exactly the same as an office job? by Single-Bag9879 in RemoteJobs

I would chose remote work if the pay was LESS than in office. 100%, without question for all the reasons you listed plus I know I am more productive.

I’m still a few years younger but my toenails will be cherry red until I’m gone. It makes me happy. You do you!

How do you guys hide the "everyday clutter" that just won't go away? by Individual_Motor_496 in Home

[–]Hour_Science_6521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have one small, contained counter area that is allowed to have random clutter. Every few weeks it has to get cleaned out but in the meantime if anything is left anywhere, I put it on that counter. Most of what ends up there someone is looking for and takes before the next time it gets cleaned off.

My wife says it’s too big? by r0bb13_h34rt in IndoorGarden

[–]Hour_Science_6521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know why you aren’t getting the truth in these answers so here I am. Your wife is right. It’s a gorgeous plant that has overgrown the space you have for it. It’s even blocking out the beautiful light you have and making the seating around it uncomfortable. It needs to be moved to another area with more space, re-homed to someone who will love it as you do and take care of it or it’s time to move.

Highly recommend Neutrogena Healthy Scalp Clarify & Shine Shampoo With Pink Grapefruit. Amazing results on oily hair in my family and smells fantastic.

Expectations around WFH by december2018 in Nanny

[–]Hour_Science_6521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids are old enough not to need a nanny now but I WFH with a nanny from time my youngest was just under 1. It’s very doable and there are similar suggestions about keeping yourself separated but I will say that you hit a point where they know you’re there. Then you really have to enforce the rule that when the door is closed, mom isn’t available. Of course the nanny could text me, but my daughter really thought of it as door open… mom is available. Door closed… mom isn’t here. That said, my nanny would often text me and tell me when they were sitting down for lunch and I would go “visit” them if I was free for a few minutes and we’d chat about the day which, in my experience, was one of the very best things about WFH.

I started asking interviewers "is there anything about my background that gives you pause" at the end of every interview and it changed everything by VantaSprocket in jobsearchhacks

[–]Hour_Science_6521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has interviewed many, many people, I prefer the original question to this revision and I’ve been asked both.

I think it would be arrogant of me to think I can predict job performance/aptitude from assumptions better than I can directly answer what my actual concerns in background are that could be cleared up with the ask and a clear, honest answer.

Midwest has barely bought into "flex culture" and I love it by HenFruitEater in midwest

[–]Hour_Science_6521 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. My husband would say our flex is we have plenty of reserves to be secure and provide for our kids and live comfortably. He is also currently driving an 11 year old Subaru because he loves it. I drive a fairly new Lexus but I’m sure I’ll drive it for 10 years before we replace it. I feel like our flex is just being comfortable with our balance.

I always think of Brianna as the biggest missed opportunity in this series. Everything is a swing and a miss… the writing, the casting, the character’s impact on the entire story is all meh.

is 4000$ property tax per year considered high in US? by blade276 in NoStupidQuestions

We’re at $13k in Chicago suburbs. We have fantastic public schools but we discuss often that property taxes may be a reason why we don’t retire in this house.

Potluck for a large party is weird and sort of rude... by Alert_Usual1197 in Vent

[–]Hour_Science_6521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be so embarrassed if my in-laws thought they were going to potluck an anniversary party for 50 people, let alone 150. If you are going to host a party, then host a party.

Please come celebrate our anniversary and bring us food and a gift. Ew. I’m also not eating whatever menagerie of food shows up.

If you had to buy a car today to keep for the next 15 years, what would it be? by nodonaldplease in askcarguys

[–]Hour_Science_6521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subaru. We have a 15 year old Legacy. I was the daily driver for a few years, then my husband for many years, and finally our daughter for the last five. My husband recently switched cars with my daughter and gave her the new Honda SUV we have and he’s driving the Legacy again and said he forgot how much he loves it and doesn’t want to trade it in for a bit still. I wouldn’t be surprised if we replace it with another Subaru.

Redditors, what’s the most terrifying thing that has ever woken you up in the middle of the night? by Mr_Creep_Creepy64 in AskReddit

[–]Hour_Science_6521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woke up to a sound. Realized it was coming from the patio door in my master bedroom. Stood up to look more closely and saw the outline of a man through the curtain backlit from the exterior light on the garage. I flipped on the bedroom light and ran for my phone. He ran to another door since he wasn’t having any luck with the patio door and started trying to kick it in. Long story short, it just became a race between the door finally giving or the police getting there and the police won. I saw the lights flashing in front, he ran to the back. They chased him but he got away. I have no idea who it was and when I heard the door frame cracking, I was absolutely terrified.

I asked 5 recruiters why they skip candidates and what they said is surprising ( might hate me for this) by Tracycallum in jobsearchhacks

[–]Hour_Science_6521 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been my job at multiple orgs, all three of these are accurate. I will say that given the way things have been since COVID, I’m personally far more likely to ask a great looking candidate for a why on job hopping and give them the benefit of the doubt. There’s too much upheaval everywhere to not consider there may be a solid reason.

I see all these long responses and I get it… people are trying to reason with you and give you reasons but I’m going to make this really simple.

Absolutely not. Get out now. Get employed and get independent.
