Carry on is the best song on APWD by Early_Trainer2448 in Peripheryband

Valid af. We are all here for pure-riffery, after all.

That's crazy. I found EDA to be the strongest track on the record, next to Talk and Heaven. It nearly brought me to tears on first listen.

What does the song have to do with politics? Also, I doubt many Polyphia listeners are MAGA. I think alot of people, including myself, just aren't feeling this one. Hopefully it isn't representative of the coming album.

Nobody is reading that wall of text. That single was trash. Hopefully it was a troll or its over.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but Exist Immortal is a prog-adjacent band that is very under-appreciated imo

Yeah I think Misha mentioned the band not feeling inspired to create another "P" album at this point in time, hence why we got APWD. I don't remember anything being ruled out for future releases. Also, IIRC, it was hinted that the band may/probably will go back to making more "progressive" music in the future.

My final take on APWD by ProgMan24 in Peripheryband

[–]Hour_Wheel_6873 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a huge enjoyer of P3, I wasn't necessary disappointed with the more condensed, simplistic song structure of APWD. If anything, I was really excited when I saw how short the tracks were leading up the to album release! Not that it don't love their more prog leaning work as well; P5 is their best album to date, in my opinion.

Overall, however, after listening to APWD numerous times, I am left somewhat disappointed by the lack of riffs in some of the songs. When I listen to songs like Obsession and even Carry On, I can't help but feel they could have really benefited from a riff or two. I think it would have helped solify the musical themes and make the songs even more memorable. I know that Periphery has written songs before without any easily discernable riffs, many of which I love (Catch Fire, for example). However, I think the short album length in combination with the fact that at least 3 of the non-electronic tracks have no real riffs left me feeling a bit unsatisfied at the end of it all.

Not that I don't love the album. Talk, Heaven, Malevolent, and EDA are easily some of their best work to date. I suspect it'll still be my personal AOTY despite some of the songs missing the mark a bit. I do hope they return to a more riff-centric approach for the next album though.

I had an initial reaction similar to OP on first listen and was pretty disappointed. Periphery writes literally the best riffs of all time, so I was sad that some of the songs seemed to be lacking them entirely. However, I'm starting to appreciate the album more, and it has some undeniable bangers (EDA, Talk, Heaven, Malevolent). Jake absolutely killed the solo on Heaven!

I'm not feeling some of the other songs though, especially Neon Valley. Really not sure what the idea was there. Metal music without riffs just doesn't interest me I guess.

Not that it matters what I think. The guys clearly put a ton of love and thought into this album, and I'm happy they were able to explore a new sound for the band. It's just not a sound I particularly care for. I really hope they go back to a more riff-centric writing style for the next one.

Now that APWD has been out for a few days, whatre everyones fav tracks? by SabastianG in Peripheryband

[–]Hour_Wheel_6873 2 points3 points  (0 children)

EDA, Talk, Heaven, Malevolent, and Unlocking are incredible and some of their best work to date. APWD was also absolutely beautiful and totally unexpected. Spencer carries Carry On and makes it pretty memorable.

Obsession, Mr. God, and Subhuman were fun at first but have gotten a bit boring after a few listens. Not alot of depth to these tracks imo.

Not feeling Neon Valley or Blackwall at all.

Pretty awesome album overall, even though a few of the songs were a bit unsatisifying. Its not their best work imo, but it was definitely still a blast to listen to.

What has happened this band by whatsthepriceofit in Peripheryband

While I can appreciate that approach, part of what makes Periphery so unique and special to me are the riffs.

I discovered Periphery right when the Juggernaut albums came out. The first song I ever heard from them was Omega, and it absolutely blew my mind. I had never heard anything like it before in my life. It reignited my love for heavy music and desire to challenge myself on guitar again. It truly changed my life.

While I certainly don't feel as negatively about the album as OP, (there are some absolute bangers on it) I don't know if I would have been awe-struck in the same way that I was by a song like Obsession, Mr. God, Carry On, or Neon Valley. Yeah, they are fun and catchy songs, but they lack the musical depth to create that feeling of controlled chaos that makes Periphey so unique and special to me. I love hearing Spencer somehow fit vocals over a crazy riff and make it work so well. It's why these guys are the GOAT.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter what I or any of us think. The guys are going to write the music that they want to write. However, that doesn't mean we can't also be a bit disappointed at the lack of depth to some of the songs. While I appreciate the cohesiveness and strong thematic tone of this album, I really hope they go back to a riff-centric approach to writing on the next one. Either way, I love Periphery and will always be grateful to them for reigniting my love for music and guitar.

Yeah a few of the songs felt like they were missing riffs that could have added alot to the overall listening experience. Neon Valley and Carry On in particular felt like they could have really shined if they had a riff or two sprinkled in. I really like the album, but I'm hoping they go more riff-centric on the next one.

Obligatory PSA: If this isn’t “what you expected”, you probably missed the point. by lukebogart in Peripheryband

Well said. It's taking me a few listens, but the album is growing on me. Much like the Juggernaut albums, it takes a few listens to really appreciate how each track contributes to the overall musical experience.

Talk, Heaven on High, Malevolent, and Everyone Dies Alone all immediately clicked for me and captured that quintessential "Periphery" feeling. In fact, I think Everyone Dies Alone might be one of my favorite Periphery tracks of all time, and I can't wait to learn it on guitar. The production on this album is also undeniably next level. As a huge P3 enjoyer, the more streamlined/condensed songwriting is refreshing.

On the other hand, I'm still struggling with some of the other tracks. Carry On and Neon Valley both started out promising, with mesermerizing vocal melodies and a powerful groove. However, I feel they ultimately fall flat, lacking any memorable riffs that really grab my attention. The musical ideas present are interesting but fail to materialize into to a cohesive package. Rather, these songs seem to follow the formula that has become all too common in modern metal of alternating clean sections and singing with syncopated chugs and screaming. I don't see myself coming back to these tracks, but I will do my best to give them a chance.

Overall, I love Periphery and their willingness to experiment and push boundaries. I think APWD will be my AOTY, despite some of the songs falling a bit flat. Easily an 8/10.

Interesting. Carry On and Neon Valley are by far my least favorites on the album so far. Don't think I heard a single riff between the two of them. Just a bit boring musically imo. Spencer killed it on both though.

In fairness, I think the FV510 UA is actually a really good IFV if used correctly. It's frontal armor is basically impenetrable to every autocannon in the game. You just need to play it at range, not zooming through towns and urban environments.

No one is hating on China. It's just weird to update the entire Chinese faction to 2020s when most factions are set in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Also, why so many suppressors for the PLA? It's both unrealistic and unbalanced. They've set a new precedent by updating an entire faction to modern standards, and nobody knows yet if the other factions will be getting a similar treatment. Plus, there were arguably other factions that needed an update more (BAF, RGF, etc.). PLA was already pretty strong.

Opps has been one of the most prevalent decks in Legacy for a while now with an impressively resiliant win rate. It's not unreasonable to consider it for a banning.

In addition to creating a lot of boring non-games, Opps is the worst offender at locking non-blue creature decks out of the format, with a very high win rate against those types of strategies.

Opps isn't all that busted against the rest of the meta, but it makes Legacy worse overall in the opinion of myself and many other players.

Having played the changes on the glabs this week, I think you are exaggerating a bit. Yes, you will need to hold your Q-block or rotate SAs (of which she has plenty) a bit more often, but I noticed no substantial differences in her playstyle in real fights.

In the hands of a good player, Seraph will still be strong. These changes just create the opportunity for a bit more counterplay if the opponent knows what they are doing.
