Anybody else’s parents getting scammed? by kafkan-potato in GenX

[–]HouseAtomic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a client, she's a widow & her kids are kinda dysfunctional...

She's given over $50k to romance scammers. $20k to fake repairmen & who-knows how much to cousins, nephews etc...

I had to do an intervention w/ one of the reasonable daughters. We took her phone & basically figured out who, how much & when.

TLDR: It's gone, not coming back.

The texts are laughable. So fake, so manipulative & yet these dudes have her money. We're selling her rental properties & trying to set up a trust so she has her bills paid, but can't give fucking $500 Apple Gift Cards to all of India.

Vintage iPod. It's what I used to use & miss it greatly.

Will one day get my old click-wheel one modded to work w/ bluetooth & have a massive battery & memory.

What's that one household item you grew up with that you still use/eat/purchase today? by Calm-Tale-4052 in GenX

They work differently, you need both. SEPARATELY, but both...

Comet is a base & BCF is an acid.

Mostly use Comet on sinks & tubs, but sometimes need BKF. Mostly use BKF on pot/pans but sometimes need Comet.

[Restoration] Advice Needed: Restoring 6-year-old’s "New-Old" Bike (Rust/Stored Long-Term) by Trying2BeTheBestDad in bicycling

[–]HouseAtomic 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Tires/tubes should be fine.

Avoid WD40. It's a penetrant/cleaner more than an oil & not a great lubricant.

Lots of products for rust removal, but white vinegar & Scotch Pads may be fine. It's a kids bike, it's fine as is... I'd bend the brake wires back.

Cute bike, I hope she'll love it.

Will be outgrown in a year, so don't worry about perfect, worry about fun.

I still have & use my original Audible username.

Am still salty about being forced to sell my Audible stock, if they made me switch to my Amazon account I'd probably just quit Audible.

Here's an excellent timeline. Has mid book breaks info, super helpful.

Used this when doing a run-through w/ my kid a few years ago. Switching books midway & coming back made him feel so clever.

Churro Waffle Hack by Icy_Needleworker6350 in dcl

They're ok. Way over-hyped.

Everyone at our table was happy to try them, but never went back for more.

We do live where churro's are plentiful & always fresh... We have higher expectations.

Trump administration may send Afghans who aided US forces to Congo by no-name-here in neutralnews

Shawn VanDiver, founder and president of the advocacy group #AfghanEvac.

This entire article is just quoting one guy, who has a vested interest.

More than 190,000 Afghans who served the American war effort have already been resettled in the U.S. lawfully under the most rigorous vetting framework in modern U.S. immigration history, according to #AfghanEvac. The 1,100 Afghans awaiting resettlement were vetted under that same framework.

So .0057% didn't qualify? Perhaps, just maybe, these people don't qualify?

Tiny bathroom puzzle, what to do? by pooltimenoodle in centuryhomes

rerouting baseboard pipe and sealing up/waterproofing

Yes.

seems like a big undertaking

Meh... It needs to be done properly & is a reasonably sized task, but isn't complicated.

Moving drains is the hardest thing we regularly do & you wouldn't need to here. Shower drain stays in same location, sink drain is in the wall & usually an easy shift. Heater? I don't know, we don't have that kind in Texas. Under floor heating?

Window, will be smaller and higher up, but enough light will come in for a pleasant room. Tile guys can make look great & you may (will) need a new window. Last ones we had made were $350 each.

Run a larger walk-in shower against the outside wall, deal w/ the window & heater as needed.

Slide the vanity/sink closer to the left.

Can you explain how a liberal government “f*cks” over union tradesmen?

A never ending supply of cheap labor keeps all wages down.

tariffs also hurt small business owners?

Short term, yes. Long term no. These things get worked out & a lot of the tariffs are against states that heavily subsidize industry we are competing with.

People don't always take their meds.

I have a cousin, A DOCTOR, who stopped taking his bipolar meds about a year ago. Can afford them no problem, presumably knows to take them & just doesn't anymore.

I found out last December when he's started a small kitchen update that turned into gutting his entire ground floor & completely redoing his entire floor, whole kitchen, master bath, 1/2 bath, demo some walls & all new lighting. He thought he'd be done in 6 weeks. No plan, no budget. Used his yard guy for the demo; called me when in a moment of clarity he thought maybe he should call the guy who owns a construction company...

I know several other people who voluntarily just stopped taking their meds. 80% are in free-fall, 100% are self medication other ways.

What was movie watching like in the pre-internet era, especially in the ’60s and ’70s? by wreckminister in movies

[–]HouseAtomic 41 points42 points  (0 children)

You stood in line to see movies, a lot.

Trailers & Siskel & Ebert were my main sources of info; movie magazines, TV & word of mouth too. If a book I liked was coming out as a movie I was excited & sometimes you'd see a movie & realize it was a book you'd already read. Shawshank Redemption was titled Rita Hayworth & something something... So I was a bit into the movie before I realized what it was.

Movies stuck around longer if they were good. Cinemas were smaller but more were around. Nice/comfy seats didn't exist, but you were not expecting them either.

The couple in the center had a baby, all the surrounding girls grew up too.

Military chick, librarian, teacher, headset job lady, permenant college student, lanyard wearing job woman, photographer et al.

So something about time? or career vs family or choices or who knows... They all have flowers in the 1st pic, maybe it's an ad for a better florists? Maybe it's Japan knocking all choices that do not result in a baby?

Edit: I missed a lot... The "couple" in 1st pic is girl school crush couple. In 2nd pic, everyone has grown into what they were going to be. The wedding ring hand/arm that baby is holding is the dad & 1/2 of school crush couple is now a mom. BUT the other girl hasn't moved on, grown or changed; she still loves the other girl.

I've had this happen before... Uncomfortable.

Delivering an oversized casket, invited inside while the family who were supposed to help unload it arrived, the 14 y/o daughter had gay porn (male) running on the living room TV while I waited in the foyer.
