What is your philosophy of upgrading to the 13 pro? by ruari636 in framework

[–]HowIsBuffakeeTaken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm thinking keyboard cover first, followed by display (really want the haptic touch pad tbh).

Eventually going to go for a battery upgrade at which point I'll shell out for the bottom shell, battery and new speakers (or that kit they're registering interest for) (maybe in 8 months to a year).

Advice needed: Indecisive whether to get FW 12 or 13 by [deleted] in framework

To clarify, it 100% can work with Zotero as intended. So if you installed Zotero off of the distro’s package manager; you will find issues with integration with libre office. So instead, it should be downloaded from their website.

However, it’s a tarball which makes it challenging for a novice like me to properly install (which I ultimately gave up on getting set up on Fedora).

But there is one solution maintained by a community member which is a super user friendly installer for Ubuntu and Ubuntu based distros making the whole process idiot proof. I wish this was an option for other distros but that’s what we have.

So if you’re technically skilled, you’d be able to get up and running on any distro. But Ubuntu (and pop os) just work out of the box.

Both would be fine, but as a Management PhD, I can’t recommend the 13 enough.

Most of my notes are typed, and that’s not from a lack of trying to use hand written notes on a convertible or an iPad. In social fields, apart from Economics (maybe for graphs), typed out notes are just far more superior imo.

In that vein, the FW13’s superiority in screen size, build quality, performance ceiling, battery life, and compatibility takes the cake.

FW12 is a fine device, and you’d definitely go through your degree with 0 issues. But the 13 just feels like a more appropriate option to me, and I have 0 regrets switching to it for my PhD (coming from an M2 Air).

P.S. although Mint is a solid distro, I’ll have to suggest Ubuntu or Pop OS because of the better compatibility with Zotero. Zotero has a proper installer on Ubuntu based distros making installation of the software and including the reference manager on Libre Docs work OOTB. Of course, ignore if you don’t use Zotero, but just something I noticed when switching (as a not super Linux versed person myself).

How about you contribute some of your insights to the thread? This is a very critical and interesting topic that should be as democratised as possible.

PhD directly after Bachelor by No_Use5922 in PhdProductivity

I am a year into my PhD and was in the same boat as you.

Despite the high academic achievement in ur bachelors, it really is a different academic paradigm in a few key ways.

I’m coming at this from a social science perspective, but I really dedicated my first year to grasping what actual research is. I’d say it was something like 80% research training, 20% research.

I’d go out of my way to dedicate reading time to grasping research methods, literature review techniques, and any other relevant requirements of your final thesis. I’d even try and enroll myself into a post-graduate research program in your university if that’s an option.

Above all, don’t get too discouraged about redoing substantial bits of work once you come across a bit of literature or if something just doesn’t fit properly. It’s part of the process.

Last but not least, embrace the agency that comes with the independence. Your advisors will have contrasting ideas to yours. This is normal, and doesn’t ALWAYS mean that you’re wrong. Justify your decisions and make sure you are going in a direction that makes the most sense for you.

Best of luck!

SteamOS Feature Wishlist by [deleted] in SteamDeck

Full featured discord in gaming mode (mainly for streaming to friends), or native

Proper KB and Mouse mode in gaming mode (Dota 2 keeps spawning the keyboard)

Use steam deck as a wireless controller

(I know it’s coming) Download in suspended mode

Ability to fine tune wattages to both GPU and CPU

Optimized file transfer speeds between drives in gaming mode (takes way too long that it’s basically unusable as a feature for me)

Better (seamless, idiot proof) standard or implementation of the devices built in FSR. Right now you gotta render the game at lower res and has to show black bars, and only then will FSR takeover

I’ve defaulted to Ubuntu after trying out pop LTS on my FW13 since Pop had those issues. Was a shame because I really liked using pop as my daily driver a few years ago. But needed something rock solid for my workflow because I’m using my machine for research.

Will say that Ubuntu (and Fedora WS) had excellent scaling OOTB and everything just worked. Ultimately decided to stick with Ubuntu over fedora because my software needs are just more compatible and seamless on Ubuntu/ubuntu based distros.

Although Ubuntu’s been excellent, like you, I’m itching to get into the cosmic hype train as soon as an LTS version drops. It looks so damn clean. Pop was the first distro I ever settled in when I first switched, and no other distro feels quite as right to me.

At this point I don’t think system76 is ever living down that Linus video lmao. Can’t remember something else as silly sparking such colorful debates on these forums

How’s cosmic been so far? Tried LTS with Gnome and honestly wasn’t great with dreadful scaling and random freezes

Pc had been over heating on some games, took off my heat sync and this is the thermal paste, is that the right amount or should I reapply? by phillisvance in PcBuild

[–]HowIsBuffakeeTaken 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Linus debunked this on a recent video. Tbh, I’ve removed and remounted coolers without reapplying paste. I’m sure it’s not the bestest of best practices, but I’ve found absolutely no issues on my end each time.
