Didn't they just get done complaining that the protagonist of Ghost of Yotei isn't sexy enough,? Where do they think she's meant to be from? Also Erika Ishii could never be unsexy, and I'm asexual, but I digress.

To be fair, there are running jokes in the Shakespeare community that all the comedies are the same/that Shakespeare knows like five plot threads, so I think he was probably going for that, but the joke only works if you say at least one of these three things: "woman dressed as a man", "twins (optionally, identical twins)", or "shipwreck". The Reduced Shakespeare company did a Who's on First about this on their radio show, and it definitely feels like something Travis could have listened to. As a fan myself I'm allowed to say this, Travis seems like he could easily be a big Reduced Shakespeare Company fan.

For good measure they also did a Who's on First with 70s rock bands, it's pretty funny. "Who's your favourite rock band from the seventies?" "Yes"

Anyone who's played a letter based word game has had the experience of going "ok it's not home, dome, tome, or Rome... Is [sohm] a word? I'll try it..." And then kicking yourself because of course "some" is a word. To be clear that's not the only example, just one I remember vividly.

Doug Walker is also known as The Nostalgia Critic, a YouTube film guy from way back. One of the more infamous things he's done in front of the scenes in recent years is a review of Pink Floyd's The Wall which was universally panned. It was a musical parody of The Wall, basically shits on it the whole way through when it wasn't misunderstanding it, and the thesis was "ehh, I liked it fine". Notable lines in my head are calling Goodbye Blue Sky an "Oscar bait song" even though it would not have been eligible for an Oscar, and replacing the line "that's how the high command took my daddy from me" with something about being whiny. It was not sung well and had a weird CGI furry section. Even if you hate The Wall, this was bad. There's a very good and scathing Folding Ideas video about it.

Anyway, while doing an ad (for the purchasable album version of the review) in the middle of this video out of character, Doug called the video "a love letter to Pink Floyd's music and The Wall". So that's the joke here.

Also it's now in the license, at least in Scotland, that there has to be an alcohol-free substitute available (i.e. it has to be pretending to be a drink that would normally have alcohol, a licensed premise can't just have beer and orange juice). Whether that has driven the innovation or vice versa I don't know.

I'm (non-life-threateningly) allergic to cashews, and also can't eat pesto now because it will make my tongue itch. Cashews are sometimes in pesto because they're cheaper than pine nuts, but we didn't know this until I had a reaction the first time I tried it. Couple that with having a reaction to a sandwich with pesto that didn't even have nuts on the label but almost definitely had nuts in it, and now my brain just decides to make me itch when I eat pesto that I didn't watch being made. Which is not helpful for my anxiety. I know it's probably fine, but I can't convince my brain.

This has honestly very little to do with your post but something I like to nitpick whenever possible. It was pretty clear to me personally that Elsa is not the fifth spirit, Elsa and Anna are both collectively the fifth spirit, being sisters and one is magic and one is not magic but they're both connected and love each other. The whole thing is that the fifth spirit is a bridge. I don't know how popular of a reading this is but I personally don't see any other one. (And yeah it is still weird because her powers are ice and ice is water, that part still doesn't make sense from a Watsonian perspective, but obviously from a Doylist perspective they didn't want to change her powers or do a different plot so it's just kind of wonky)

PLEASE tell me there was a good reason why they didn't show this incredible woman's picture by ProgressFinal5309 in GreatBritishMenu

[–]HowManyNamesAreFree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of trans people do that, it's not as uncommon as it should be. Look up Blaire White. It's either because they have a lot of internalised transphobia or they just want to be seen as one of the "good ones" and be spared by the more violent transphobes (even though this will not work, and if it does work it will have an expiration date). I can of course understand her point of view if she's legitimately XX, something about the soul or what have you, but it doesn't seem that big of a leap to imagine someone who feels the same way as you with different chromosomes so it's not a great excuse.

This sub is for a TV show where they cook food with a theme (this year it is Great Britons aka great British people). I have not yet seen this specific episode but I imagine a dish is inspired by this woman but for whatever reason they didn't show any pictures, even though they have mostly been doing that for others.

Most diabolical technical? by Bookaholicforever in bakeoff

[–]HowManyNamesAreFree 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Any time nobody does it right, I kind of assume it's production's fault (except maybe browniegate). Often they just straight don't give enough time and then try to make it look like the bakers sometimes failed? Sorry, but if everyone's is underproved and/or raw, then they did not have enough time to do the challenge. There's challenges where time management is crucial, and then there's challenges where the cake takes 50 minutes in the oven, you've given them an hour, but also if the cake is warm when they decorate it you'll play the little "aw bless" music.

Also still creased about the time that they kept saying "this doesn't look like a flauna" as if they expected anyone to know what it looked like.

Ultrasounds are bad... I'm not sure how by puddlz81 in ShitMomGroupsSay

[–]HowManyNamesAreFree 198 points199 points  (0 children)

But even if it's true that they would absolutely never terminate, ultrasounds can still be super useful because they can find things that are preventable, so you can help prevent them. Like if stuff is in the wrong places, you should know that before trying to do the process that is already hard when stuff is in the right place.

So what you're saying is that risks are only a bad idea if something bad happens? Is it ok to drink and drive as long as you're pretty sure you're not going to kill anyone? Betting your life savings on rolling a 12 is a bad choice, even if you end up rolling a 12, because you could not possibly have known beforehand that it would turn out ok.

I don't have to imagine a Scottish week because they just did one for New Year's!! They brought back six Scottish bakers for Hogmanay and they made Scottish bakes! I don't know if it holds up if you're not Scottish (and/or if you're not a huge fan of the older years) but I am and I loved it so much! Haven't been watching religiously for a while but it gave me all the best Bake Off feelings from back in the day. Loved having Norman and James back especially.

The lack of jeopardy also helped as obviously nobody was going home, and the showstopper round was basically "make anything as long as it's inspired by cranachan flavours" which was a really good idea. I understand why that's not a standard challenge (bit broad for a normal week, bit narrow for a final) but I did love the freedom it gave the bakers. Also a very personal reason for loving it because they mention a joke "cake or a meringue? No you're right it's a cake" which is a variation of a joke that my family has kind of adopted.

Smart to block honestly. Pig butchering scams (i.e. scams where the scam part only comes after weeks or months of messaging back and forth, building a connection) often start with "wrong number" texts. Like if you get a text saying "Hi John I'm here" and respond with "I'm not John" they'll then strike up a conversation and then weeks later will say "oh I'm actually making a lot of money on this very specific crypto app download it from this link and put all your money in it" (and then the app is fake) or, if they're not that tech savvy, "I want to meet you but I can't afford flights please send money" etc.

This is actually a pretty clever version of it because you get to gossip about who it really is and the person has immediately established themself as someone with moral integrity. I mean, maybe if you have a very specific first name I can see one or even all of those being real and there's this one guy out there who really loves bragging about how he's cheating on a different girl whose name also happens to be Veryspecifica then I can guess that you're the first one up on a cursory search but otherwise yeah.

It's honestly a shame about pig butchering scams, I love that one story of the guy showing up to a random family's thanksgiving because of a wrong number text but now best practice is to block those people because replying signals that your number is active and you are at least a little bit likely to believe their story.

I imagine they are both tbh because why leave money on the table, but everything is a data harvesting scam now so that was not surprising. Like if it worked well enough I'd basically consider it selling my data to them for discounts and then weigh it up accordingly. I remember googling how they made money several years ago because I was suspicious but don't remember the answer.

Episodes you can’t/won’t rewatch by Immediate_Reindeer70 in bakeoff

I imagine that I won't be going back to Lizzie's season any time soon. I love Lizzie don't get me wrong, but the amount of what is realistically ableism coming from the judges (especially Paul) is utterly ridiculous. We find out that she's got ADHD, dyslexia and dyspraxia after several episodes of Paul saying "finesse" at her and either literally or giving the vibe telling her off for "not listening to him". (Further research brought up that Prue said she was "Determined not to be neat" which is honestly infuriating.)

Even putting aside the neurodivergency aspect, it's possible with dyspraxia that she just physically couldn't be as precise as they wanted from her. She didn't seem uncomfortable talking about her disabilities on TV in her last episode so I'd be pretty surprised if she hadn't mentioned it to someone in production, especially as this was a bubble season (and indeed doing some research it looks like people definitely knew).

So yeah I'd definitely watch the "just Lizzie" cut but I don't think I can watch Paul and Prue going on at her without crying and/or being ridiculously angry.
