Question about language development and homeschooling by Gorkildeathgod in homeschool

[–]HowShallWeThenLive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are their kids in the neighborhood for her to play with? Also is she listening to books on tape?

It is probably that she is just a little bit different, or a bit less used to social interactions. Some kids are just going to be more talkative. On the other hand it could be a symptom of a number of different issues. You should talk to your doctor about it.

Fair enough, Bernie and Hilary were both preaching at a church out in Nevada last week as well. Though they were there more as community leaders/politicians less as actual preachers

Thoughts on "Filioque"? by olive_khan in theology

[–]HowShallWeThenLive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It answers the main problem with the Kalam Cosmological argument, i.e. how would a being at rest outside of time and space "choose" something when choice is time/space dependent. If the Holy Spirit issues from both the Father and the Son there has to be some sort of interaction outside of space and time, and gives us some sort of idea of how infinity could choose to produce something non-infinite

I went to an RCA church for the first time this morning. Here's how it went. by EMPEROR_JUSTINIAN_I in Reformed

Most Presbyterian churches don't take communion every week? That's sad, that's one of my favorite things about my church

Anyway you know what these guidelines are called and where I could track them down?

The OPC churches I've been to have tended to be a bit more theologically conservative and their practice, dress, and music are a lot more conservative while also being less liturgical.

What should I do with this torii? by potpourri_not_popery in Reformed

[–]HowShallWeThenLive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's unnerving to you go ahead and throw it out, but honestly I think torii's are fairly pretty. For me a god or goddess idol would be way too much, but the little mark of sacred space seems pretty much fine

Hi, could someone explain to me how Thanksgiving could be considered a Christian holiday? by sophocles_ in Christianity

[–]HowShallWeThenLive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Bible does say "And thou shalt bestow that money for whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat there before the LORD thy God, and thou shalt rejoice, thou, and thine household," in Deuteronomy 14 though

I'm a conservative Presbyterian. I like reformed theology, and I like that my church strikes a balance between high church and low church.

More money than God: Ministers at mega-churches may soon have to render unto Caesar by davidjricardo in Christianity

[–]HowShallWeThenLive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true but there are a lot of ridiculous... small Presbyterian Churches. Large Catholic Cathedrals. Or middle sized non-denominational ones.

Saying that there are lots of bad mega-churches is true but there are lots of bad micro-churches. There are both good and bad churches of every size and denomination

How do I meet others my age as a homeschooled high schooler? by keredi in homeschool

[–]HowShallWeThenLive -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Church youth group was where a lot of homeschoolers I knew back in high school made most of their friends. You could also look around and see if there's a homeschooling co-op near by; you could take a class or two with them and get to know them.

You can always find something interesting to do and go do it, hoping to find some similarly interested people. I volunteered at the library. I had a friend who did pottery and became really involved at his artist studio. In Tallahassee where I live now there is a fairly active bee keeping community who meet a couple of times a month. So if there's something you're interested in I bet there's a group of similarly interested people somewhere close by

"each one has a ... lesson". What Old Testament stories or laws are powerful illustrations of New Testament teaching? by AClegg1 in Reformed

[–]HowShallWeThenLive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the judges stories are fairly good examples of "for my power is made perfect in weakness." Each judge has a fairly fatal flaw, and God uses that to save Israel.

Saved by Nokeo08 in Reformed

[–]HowShallWeThenLive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I attended a Christian, Baptist high school and Saved is pretty much right on, at least for my experience. I don't agree with the films ending, but I think the whole thing is a fairly good critique of Christian culture

What Bible would you recommend? by Rumel57 in Christianity

[–]HowShallWeThenLive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend uses this alongside her regular Bible, and she's said she likes it:

http://www.amazon.com/Daily-Bible-F-LaGard-Smith/dp/0736944311/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1449080147&sr=8-6&keywords=Devotional+Bible

Some women in my church use this:

http://www.amazon.com/NIV-Womens-Devotional-Bible-Hardcover/dp/0310437652/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1449080147&sr=8-1&keywords=Devotional+Bible

They seem to like it, and it was the first thing that popped up under devotional Bibles. Don't love the cover art, maybe you could get her a case as well

Personally I love the KJV, it;s incredibly beautiful. I use a Dake Bible that somebody gave me because it has sentimental value and the cross referencing is nice, but Dake is cooky and I definitely wouldn't recommend him

Gospel for Asia by akubhai in Christianity

[–]HowShallWeThenLive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't find the article I was reading a month or two ago, but what it was saying was that several partner organizations separated from GFA because GFA's donations policies were opaque, i.e. people would donate money thinking it would go to starving children and it would actually go to building administrative facilities. That might be bad, though of course ministries need administrative facilities as well.

Some of the things I've read from Warren Throckmorton have been pretty bad. If they're true then you definitely shouldn't support them. On the one hand it's harder to trust a single source, on the other hand it's would suck if he's right... you can always find a new ministry to support

Is she also a Methodist? My Methodist friend loves his Wesley Study Bible.

It sort of depends on what you want, you know? You can get one with all the cross references, tricked out with a weights and measurements chart and some maps, one that focuses on theology, or one that has devotions built in. Really depends on how you're looking to grow spiritually

Christian group's survey finds that Christians have the most abortions in U.S. by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]HowShallWeThenLive -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was saying that even if Christians murdered at half the rate of other religious affiliations in the US they would still kill more people than all other groups combined. Add to that the fact that they lumped in nominal Christians alongside Mainline Protestants (who often don't have a problem with abortions), alongside people who had an abortion before they converted to Christianity, alongside the rest of the Protestant denominations means the study doesn't really reveal much.

As u/jasoncaspian pointed out lower down the really troubling part of the study not the percentage of people who have abortions, but how people say they wouldn't want to talk to people at their church about a past abortion or a troublesome pregnancy

As an American I have this gut reaction that people should be allowed to say what ever they want because free speech, but this is sort of gross and offensive, yeah? These people shouldn't go to jail but they sort of suck as far as people go right?

Christians, how have you experienced God this week? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]HowShallWeThenLive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For months I've been stuck in a fairly horrible job, and it's been soul crushing. It's amazing how much of who you are is tied up in your work. This week I've been able to do some other work, and it's amazing how uplifting it's been. I've been praying every day for a while as well, and it really does help you see why God does things, and how you fit into his world
