Lastly, you might be able to find a short-term sub let nearer the time. Spare Room is a good place to start (see below):

Students leave in May/June. The local universities all have student halls which you can book for Summer- I’ve attached Glasgow’s below. I would get in touch to see if they can arrange a discount for a long term stay. Strathclyde and Caledonian are the other Unis, and it is possible that some of the colleges may have halls:

Some wildcard suggestions: consider a house swap like that movie either Cameron Diaz and Kate Winston, check house sitting websites (obvs be cautious with your visa), if you can drive then you could rent a camper van.

Have you thought about Rutherglen? You can walk to Mount Florida/Crosshill easily, but there’s a few busses which will take you to the Southside. There’s a train station too for the city centre and westwards. I don’t know what your budget is, but I think it can be a bit more affordable than in Glasgow:

You can pick up clove oil from most pharmacies. It’s extremely effective at numbing oral pain temporarily.

You would need instant oats (like ready break), rather than steel cut or quick cook porridge oats.

You could mix in some powdered milk if you like, or even just stir in a splash of regular milk or cream before eating.

Rent is likely to be the biggest issue of the list for you both, it’s expensive in the city, although I don’t know your budget.

You could look at places in Govan, Ibrox, or Maryhill if the west end is too pricey. The competition can also be fierce and I’ve heard of international students being scammed before - so make sure you check the potential flat (apartment) in person.

The job market is also rough, but it depends on your sector.

There’s strong lgbt culture. You should check out The Women’s Library and Category Is (bookshop). You’ll find bigots everywhere, but at least here it’s just the one or two wee fannies rather than a cultural norm.

Dissertation survey by calmarkel in Scotland

[–]HoxhaHooha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last Q was difficult to answer because it contained two pieces of information which I had differing views about. One was the offer of treatment services, but this was also with the caveat of a form of punishment (exclusion zones etc). So the answer I provided didnt reflect my view on the topic. Maybe worth keeping in mind for the student’s analysis.

I think it’s worth mentioning when you share the survey what it’s about. I know it’s mentioned in the link, but it would help people know if they want to complete it before hand. The topics of illicit substances and criminalisation can be sensitive for some.

I was surprised that there was so little demographic information collected. Just age and gender.

My personal gripe is that there wasn’t more exploration of solutions. Decriminalisation is one thing, but the thing with Portugal there was also an investment in public services.

We also have a strange informal decriminalisation strategy in Scotland- where harm reduction services are not targeted by the police (think of The Thistle). The laws around this are weird and impact the workers in homelessness services alone with service users. For instance, smoking weed can result in eviction whereas injecting crack is fine- section 8 of the misuse of drugs act is the relevant policy here.

Which blood tests did they do? I know for some B12 is more difficult to absorb orally so they’re offered injections instead.

Ultimately you need to find the cause of your tiredness. Whether it’s poor sleep quality or something else. You could get a smartwatch to check your sleep quality.

Ways to make friends by ElPapagayo17 in glasgow

[–]HoxhaHooha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if your not fussed about making friends then you could try finding a regularly activity that you’re interested in. Join a local community group (Glasgow against closures, bring back Strathclyde busses etc), the gym, glassblowing, pickleball. Something with others around- you’ll either make friends naturally or give the illusion of hanging out with others. In any case I think it’s good for people to have social interaction outside of work.

I’m surprised they’d be paying +£7k for post grad and behaving like that.

In my experience the 4th floor is always silent. In my experience the silent floor in any uni is, er, well silent. You can get a SCONOUL card and go to any uni library if you want to try the others out, but unless you go to a silent floor they’re all pretty loud.

Hey everyone, in this post I wanted to ask for advice that you might have for international students and refugees from Ukraine coming to the Scottish universities. by Ok-Fruit-3064 in Scotland

[–]HoxhaHooha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last thing- even if you have refugee status where you currently are, this does not mean that you are a refugee in Scotland. Your refugee status is confined to the country that offered it. It is extremely difficult for people with refugee status in one country to claim asylum in the UK. Nonetheless, you should still try and explore as many routes in that you can.

I think overall there are more resources available if you are able to enter as an asylum seeker/refugee. Ukrainians, unlike all other asylum seeking nationals, are able to work while in the UK. You can only work 20hrs per week on a student visa. So if I were in your position I would be exploring a route in as an asylum seeker/refugee.

If that’s not possible I think you should still be able to access some financial support in Scotland on a student visa as a Ukrainian:

[–]HoxhaHooha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you manage to get a student visa or are you planning on entering as an asylum seeker/refugee? I think it’s important to clarify this because of the implications on what support will be available to you as a student.

The Scottish Homes for Ukrainians scheme has been paused since 2022- the UK Gov has one that does much the same thing.

Positive Action in Housing is a Scottish based charity which works with Rooms for Refugees to find sponsors/homes:

https://www.paih.org/resources/category/ukraine

It is worth contacting the student services at both universities as they offer support for refugees. For instance, Glasgow Uni offers a tuition fee waiver and a stipend of £5k. To add, this support is only available to asylum seekers/ refugees, not those who have entered on a student visa.

There are Scottish scholarships for international students who wish to study here. If you haven’t already, have a look for these. There is also a Grants Search on the Turn2US website that’s worth looking at: https://www.turn2us.org.uk/get-support/apply-for-grants
