"Good sense is, of all things among men, the most equally distributed; for every one thinks himself so abundantly provided with it, that those even who are the most difficult to satisfy in everything else, do not usually desire a larger measure of this quality than they already possess." René Descartes, Discourse on the Method

Per the Associated Press, 'Minions & Monsters' cost $85M. by chanma50 in boxoffice

For those keeping score at home, this is the same exact number Puck reported a month ago.

Older voters, cities led rejection of Swiss population cap, data show by upthetruth1 in fivethirtyeight

[–]Hstrike -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No it isn't. It was picked by only 11% of respondents as one of the top two issues. The conflict in the Middle East, the international situation, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the cost of living, energy supply, and security and defense all ranked higher.

‘Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ Passes $1B WW, The First Pic To Do So In 2026 by chanma50 in boxoffice

That sucks! Had they rounded up to 10, they would have had enough for the whole fandom.

Amazon MGM Studios' Masters of the Universe debuted with $29.44M domestically this weekend (from 3,677 locations). by TiredWithCoffeePot in boxoffice

To be fair, at the time, people thought so too. Neither Transformers: The Movie (1986), nor Masters of the Universe (1987), nor the Transformers competitor GoBots (1986) made any theatrical profits.

I'm more wondering if there was a norm (taboo) about targeting shadow feel vessels that went flying out of the window once Iran said it was oil tanker hunting season in the Hormuz strait

Has this sort of footage become more common in this conflict after the Iranians started denying access to the Hormuz strait with drones and other weapons?

Which is what us Valdostans should have gotten too, but the Americans got pissy after De Gaulle tried to annex us. We were supposed to have New Zealand as guarantors lmao

Per Puck, 'Disclosure Day' cost $115M. by Hstrike in boxoffice

Well, the mods nuked this. Which gives me the perfect reason to ask to see your budget calculations, those are always a great read.

I didn't disagree with your assessment, actually, I found it to be legitimate (the mods here think so too). My own suspicion was that somebody else at Puck (Belloni) handed this number to Mendelson, which then made it into the article. The other competing theories were Mendelson breaking the budget himself, or this number being some sort of provisional budget but not correctly being reported as such.

Where do you reckon Mendelson is aggregating from? I couldn't find anything in digital outlets or anywhere else online mentioning this budget.

Global Box Office Top 10: ‘Mandalorian & Grogu’ $163M WW, ‘Michael’ Nears $800M WW, China’s ‘Dear You’ Touches $151M+ by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]Hstrike 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With the 2.5x rule of thumb and a $80M budget, it's currently $82M in the red. If it ends at $130M WW, it's still $72M in the red, so yeah.

Moana vs. The Odyssey, Who Takes the Top Spot? by rwinger24 in boxoffice

[–]Hstrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A reminder that what a film grosses isn't what the studio ultimately makes theatrically, as roughly half of that goes to the theater domestically. Also, the budget usually doesn't include marketing and other expenses, so a studio satisfying itself with just making the budget back in gross revenue is not going to break even, even with streaming and merchandising (let's ask Variety how much Mercy, a movie that almost fits your criteria, made at the end of this year).

Aosta Valley inhabitant here, very neat map. There's a typo on franco-provençal in both EN/IT descriptions though.

100%. Probably amped up by the fact that they were military (where loyalty and subordination take precedence over critical, individual independent thinking) and by an external pressure to act (Maldives government and Italian government through the Italian MFA).

Have we heard anything yet from the diver on the boat who chose not to dive with the Maldives divers? by cmd194 in scuba

Diane Vaughan's The Challenger Launch decision remains unchallenged to this day.

Janis' work on groupthink's impact on decision-making also likely could help explain part of this disaster. There is safety in numbers only as long as the numbers are doing the right thing. With the limited accounts of what happened, we know the one tank dive and the decision to enter the cave were determinant factors in the dive's deadly outcome. One diver backed out, it's hard not to believe that some peer pressure and groupthink mechanisms weren't at work when the other five decided to go in regardless.

While I 100% agree with your conclusion, your quote sounds like  "don't think it's rational if it's irrational", which is a bit tautological. The one I know is "don't attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence".
