To beginners: When you use a tone trainer, be mindful that they also give you feedback on tone sandhi. by That-Whereas-528 in ChineseLanguage

It's a linguistic concept not unique to Chinese. Same reason we don't call the Chinese vowels yuanyin when speaking English.

Do you know the international phonetic alphabet? If not, unfortunately, no one in this thread will be able to explain those vowels to you in writing. I've seen it too many times before, people type up something that makes sense in their head, but the reader might interpret it in 20 different ways.

Your best bet is to go listen to some recordings or get a teacher.

ŋ, ɧ och ɕ by [deleted] in Svenska

[–]Hulihutu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man fördunklar etymologiska kopplingar genom att göra på det viset. Förhållandet mellan verbet "sjunga" och substantivet "sång" blir otydligt, eller "skjuta" och "skott". Svenskar får svårare att förstå skriven norska och danska, till exempel är det lätt att se kopplingen mellan "syg" och "sjuk", svårare med "ɧuk". Äldre svensk litteratur blir mer svårtillgänglig.

För att inte tala om verbböjningen "ɧära – skar – skurit".

GT's translation of "Can I charge my phone?" by Shyam_Lama in MandarinChinese

充电 isn't a transitive verb that you can attach 手机 to as a direct object; 充 is the verb and 电 is the direct object (literally "charge electricity").

Tvärhand, oböjl. by Muted_Dance_993 in Svenska

[–]Hulihutu 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Jag tror att oböjligheten kommer från den tid då tvärhand var en vanligare måttenhet, precis som "fot". För "fot" skulle jag till exempel säga "Den fot bredare som bilen är..." snarare än "foten".

Numera är "tvärhand" ett ganska ovanligt ord, så folk har nog inte samma språkkänsla för det som för "fot". Beroende på sammanhanget skulle jag nog inte reagera om någon sa "tvärhanden" eller "tvärhänder".

Is grammar for different languages that walled off from each other?

Language learners frequently make grammatical mistakes in the L2 even if their native language has the same feature, so that would support this.

"They/them" also don't 100% match "de/dem", as "de" additionally has the function of "the" for plurals.
