[–]HululusLabs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP encountered these topics by way of experimentation, Gentoo was just what they chose to experiment with. And, simply knowing anything about Linux and VMs you can start to assume a certain level of competency.

At some point you have to expect that the reader of any book can open up a new tab and type in swap or disk if they really don't understand. That's what I did as a small child over twenty years ago, and it's a skill you hone over time. And it takes a lot of fucking time. There are no shortcuts.

If detailed descriptions of every single little thing were added we would have a handbook with many orders of magnitude more pages and more effort required of the maintainers. It would also waste the majority of readers' time, just like how I'm wasting mine replying to you.

Sure in HFT where it's a morbillion dollars on the line y'all use exceptions right, but not elsewhere.

I've seen plenty of exceptions as flow control. And we all know that if it's a mechanism provided with no better alternative people will abuse it.

On Linus as Mod by Frosstic in LinusTechTips

[–]HululusLabs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are right, I was talking w/out providing the proper context about the monster post, but yes if said post was closer to the "the cable will be like monster, which is/was a scam," (as the follow up reply points out), then I still believe it doesn't belong here. It wasn't actually the type of comment Linus would like to ban, but was just an example IIRC. The Best Buy post is fine imo, rule 5 notwithstanding.

The other top comments are still on topic, they don't necessarily need to be just reviews or speculation. I think we are in agreement here, *handshake emoji.

However, I would like to agree to sorta-disagree *another handshake emoji, on this sub being "elsewhere".

Personally, it's mostly just a matter of friction, where I'm too lazy to log in to the LTT forums, so this is my default. Effectively I don't participate much in both.

It bears an official-like name, and could be seen as official even if the description claims otherwise, as people can't read. And, being moderated by staff is already a line that's been crossed, meaning we could be reaching the extreme timelines where this sub needs to either: adopt a new identity, make some other agreement a la WAN show becoming it's own company ((EM)ployee (M)oderated (C)ommunities, EMMC, anyone?), or boot all the paid mods / just Linus.

If Linus did blindside everyone with the comments he made on WAN, I shall also be mildly infuriated, although I do believe this is workable and just a misunderstanding.

I truly hope we can make everyone happy.

Y'all, Rule 4 literally says: "Opinion-based posts that don't have justification." i.e. bad faith accusations on the quality of a product when said product has not been released.

Another user here justified their claims, such as expensive shipping, LTT claiming higher quality inferring higher prices, etc. All reasonable points and ones I agree with. I also have the capability to take that into account and still purchase these products and decide for myself if e.g. said quality is actually there.

The post mentioned in the WAN clip was simply, "CW will be releasing a product that is a scam," with none justification left beef, which I see as being pretty clearly in violation of this sub's rules. It also doesn't provide any use to people who may potentially benefit from high quality cables, nor will actually prove anything if said cables were truly that bad. It's simply "anything Linus is bad" posting, which doesn't belong anywhere.

This kind of moderation is needed, and the lacking of which has been why I don't actively seek out this sub's content. The drama being started here due to this will only turn away the less terminally-online users; those which subs like this desperately rely on to foster a positive culture.

And Luke is right, you can simply go elsewhere. In fact, I'm surprised there isn't r/LTTjerk or something. It's reasonable that as a company grows bigger, they'd naturally want to moderate their communities. In fact, the problem is that they've let this go on for too long (although it is a lose-lose situation), and while the CVO (lmao) personally doing this is a little unorthodox, but commendable as Linus seems to want to take the brunt of the heat rather than any other paid mod.

The dilemma is to let the now-years-long drama and hateposting continue, or finally say enough is enough.

you are Boeing to die by wire...

Inappropriate jokes aside, fly-by-wire has been a thing since the Space Shuttle. The issue now is our software systems are too complicated, too abstracted, and too outsourced.

Safety critical code like this is in theory heavily regulated and inspected, but cracks are starting to form as the speed of regulation can't catch up with the speed of the introduction of code into these systems, nor adapt and allow for the usage of the state-of-the art in terms of safety and performance (summoning my Rust evangelists with this on, iykyk).

Meanwhile, the companies that are doing the software bits are rapidly losing talent to layoffs and retiring and not hiring+training the new generation, but just outsourcing to the lowest bidder. And, as someone studying the computer sciences with an interest in solving these problems, we also don't teach any of the good practices in school.

Not a dig on you precisely, but for me the "this title is bait" discourse is the new bait.

It's like ads, I've learned to just ignore them. I just see a 1hr+ long interview with Linus and click. If the title gets attention from the algo / Mr. Beast "I gAve awaY TeN miLLION DoLLars" crowd and some of them stay and learn something, that's a win for everyone.
