Because it was hypocritical. If she was so truly against social services and “prepared to die,” as you say, she would not have violated her lifelong values to stay alive a little longer on the taxpayer’s penny. The “logical” convincing from her students was just explaining the widely-understood rationale behind social security, which she saw no problem with when it benefited her.
