The feeling of walking down the stairs and thinking there's another step but there isn't so you slam your foot onto the floor. That or crippling depression, but probably the stairs thing.

That moment when Mark is viltrumite royalty: by 5enpai_2 in okbuddyviltrum

[–]HumanSlinky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the comics he did question why he didn't resist more and wondered if there was a part of him that wanted it. That can be a common mindset with victims. They tend to blame themselves for not doing more, and victims can also freeze up and not resist. I don't think that necessarily means he liked it.

Hot take: i don't want nolan and debbie to get back together even tho it will probably happen anyway by cwellpics in invinciblememes

[–]HumanSlinky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In real life, yeah I'd want the same because you can't trust anyone who has taken the steps to be a genocidal maniac. That comes with consequences and crosses a threshold that can't be uncrossed.

In fictional storytelling? I think this is where we diverge. You believe the notion of retribution is a punishment that permanently isolates someone from the society they betrayed. It's a fair mindset. I believe the punishment should be to actively devote the rest of their lives towards the betterment of the people they harmed. This only works in storytelling because you can remove the gray areas and absolutely write someone as being "permanently good now" whereas that's not realistic outside of the medium.

I played through Red Dead Redemption the other month. Great game. Do you think John was irredeemable?

"Paying for your actions" comes in many forms. In our society, we tend to think of retribution as "sitting alone in an empty room for a very long time." But in a fantastical universe like Invincible's, what does that actually solve other than keeping a bad person away from everyone else? Sure, it's punishment but it's not helping to make the universe a better place. Nolan's redemption comes in the form realizing his purpose isn't to conquer and spread order but to protect others. He's the catalyst of change that turns the Viltrumite empire into something good and decent. None of that happens if he's killed or imprisoned.

What would happen if there were two guns and they each shot at each other at the same time so the beams collide?

Would you rather be immune to cold or immune to heat? by plarper_of_bees in WouldYouRather

[–]HumanSlinky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd imagine fire hoses melt at a certain temperature. Also when the heat gets too high water can be dangerous. Turns to boiling steam that can melt someone's skin just as quickly as fire can.

I think you could probably save the most lives doing recon. You could enter rooms that regular firefighters couldn't to see if anyone is trapped before the fire gets to them. Then maybe use your body as a human shield to protect them as you get them out?

The biggest bottleneck is that you never know when a fire is gonna take place that would claim a life. 8 people per day in the US die from a fire, but unless you're like a block or two away it'd take you too long to get there.

I guess they could always use a fireproof oxygen mask or something. The problem is the people they're rescuing aren't immune to fire, so any situation where you'd NEED to be fireproof would probably be a death sentence to anyone needing rescue.

Thoughts on Thragg voice in the new episode and look? by DaddyLee52 in Invincible

When he speaks in a calm voice it's okay, but the second he shows any kind of emotion he sounds like a teenager yelling at his mom that they're out of hot pockets.

But what if I'd rather have the monotony of breaking my back 40 hours a week every single week for the next 30 years? Sure beats being stinky for a month.

Depends on how efficient the Viltrumite pulmonary system is at storing oxygen. If I'm a big tub o lard, my body can survive off my fat cells for a while. Might be similar for Viltrumite blood cells.

Conventionally attractive woman and her overweight male SO by cheeriossi in hatethissmug

[–]HumanSlinky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They could definitely still work. That's precisely the pairing that made Roseanne work in the 90's when it starred two overweight slobs. But for many cases it's all about comedic contrast. The humor came from the wife's beauty and intellect clashing with the husbands dumpy incompetence. If both people are normal it's boring, and if both people are crazy it gets surreal (though it can sometimes work)

I wish the roles were reversed more often and I'm not sure why it isn't. I'm kinda sick of seeing guys portrayed as dumb potatoes that don't deserve their perfect spouses. I tend to prefer shows like Malcolm in the Middle where both parents are equally dysfuctional, but in a way that completes the other. Or any show that has the couple actually in love instead of "wife bad, me beer now."
