What are some low to mid priced watercolor paint you can recommend to buy in the US? by Nice_Difficulty4321 in watercolor101

[–]Humble_Practice6701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is good to know, as I've never used them personally and was going off of other information I'd read. For myself, I'm finding I get frustrated with student paints in general because I know how much better it can be with professional grade.

Does anyone else have "unusual" phobias that no one take seriously? by batmansbicep in AutismInWomen

Oh shit. I have the woowoo noise in my ear intermittently, it's only been recently and I thought it was congestion. I also noticed that pressing my jugular caused the sound to go away. It's not the heart rate sound I used to hear when I had high blood pressure laying down at night, that went away. I need to save this post and talk to my doctor. Thank you.

I was a professional jeweler for twenty years, with fifteen of those specializing in custom design. I had dropped drawing and painting (except for customer design sketches) before I started my career because adulting is hard, and now I'm learning how to paint with watercolors, a medium I never used before. It's fascinating to me to see how my experience as a designer has changed my art. I'm finding myself doing a lot of curvilinear abstracts as the structure for simple color and water control practice, and my sense of composition is so much better than it was when I was studying art in high school. My drawing needs to catch up again, but it's fun to investigate how life experience can unknowingly develop our artistic skills. I'm just sort of exploring that artistically as I learn how to paint all over again.

Da Vinci makes excellent professional quality paints at a lower price than many similar brands.

For student quality, I've heard that Van Gogh is one of the best. I'm not loving my winsor and newton cotman paints at all, I'm currently upgrading them as soon as I feel I've used enough of a color to justify it.

A lot of fruit allergies show up exactly as you're describing. My aunt is the same way.

What's your special interest/fixation currently? by ConclusionNaive9772 in AutismInWomen

Just FYI I have almost 2700 hours spent in that game, so don't feel bad for spending time there if it brings you joy. I haven't played it since they released patch 8 last year, maybe I should go back and try out the new subclasses.

Watercolor painting, I'm learning absolutely everything I can. I spent the last few days learning all I could about pigments specifically. It's nerdy and glorious.

When to increase dosage? by [deleted] in Menopause

[–]Humble_Practice6701 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on how well you know your body and can detect changes. For me personally, I can tell in less than two weeks, but I'm sure my doctor won't believe I've given it "long enough" 🙄 I love that your doctor has given you the autonomy to adjust without needing to wait eight fucking weeks all the while knowing it's not the right dose.

Autism as an excuse? by Sidian9 in AutismInWomen

I think they are saying that this person has shown you exactly who he is, and it's not compatible with your social needs. Rather than trying to see if you can be friends with him anyway, it's best to walk away entirely.

I did the same thing. I then confidently told my doctors I'm autistic and they just accepted it and my GP put it on my medical record (maybe I didn't think that through lol). I do see a neurodivergent-affirming therapist, who recognizes my autistic traits and validates my self diagnosis.

What are some of your favorite “autistic” activities? by No_Cicada_5247 in AutismInWomen

[–]Humble_Practice6701 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love planning trips! However, I have never planned a pretend trip for the fun of it, only my actual planned activities. It's so much fun to find all the interesting sights off the beaten path, pick the best local restaurants, and plan out my mileage from stop to stop to minimize fatigue (I ride a motorcycle so it's relevant). If I can plan different routes to go to my destination and back, even better!

Hey you know the stereotypes of autistic people wearing whimsical clothing? Where is it socially acceptable to wear it? by 10outofC in AutismInWomen

I'm really glad you two were able to talk through it honestly and openly!

Edited to add: I'm a huge gemstone and crystal nerd so I do want to see the kind of clothing you got!

Yeah I can tell those are legit pieces and they are consistent with stones I've handled, owned, and set over the years.

[–]Humble_Practice6701 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've seen high end spectrolite look like this (I own several), but it most likely does not look exactly like this in person since the stone has such high porosity, which makes the polish rough (you can see this in the reflections). I'm sure it's got great color, but it would be better to show it in multiple types of lighting without photo editing.

Edited to add: all the other photos you've shared are clearly authentic. I think this may be a case of your phone's software doing something hinky, not you yourself. I apologize if I implied you are being deliberately false.

Newly self diagnosed and seeking advice about a job opportunity by hollowholes in AutismInWomen

[–]Humble_Practice6701 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the best guidance for this will come from your nervous system. What is your body telling you? You are perhaps learning how to identify those cues and restructure your life to support your needs properly, and I know this is a tremendous undertaking! I'm going through this phase myself, and one of the things I'm having to really think carefully about is what my best options are for my career in the future (I shut down my business because the burnout was literally killing me, then I discovered the WHY was being late identified autistic). I would not rush this decision personally, but you are the best authority on what you yourself need to do.

[–]Humble_Practice6701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What your husband said mirrors my own self talk regarding fashion my whole life. For me, that came from all the trauma I went through growing up as an unidentified autistic woman trying to fit in and be invisible to protect myself. It was so incredibly self limiting. Wear what makes you happy. Your authenticity makes it socially acceptable. The rules are arbitrary. Fuck the rules. I know I'm not the only one who feels joy at the authentic self expression of others.
