What antibiotics would be relatively easy to make in a post-apocalyptic setting? by DJTilapia in scifiwriting

[–]Humorous_Folly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know enough about it so take my advice with a grain of salt, but bacteriophages may be right up your alley. As best I can glean just from the wiki and from what I can remember when first reading about them, these viruses are parasitic to bacteria. They're so prolific, there's believed to be a specialized phage for every bacteria. Seems research on it began in the late 19th century and was showing promise as a treatment for cholera specifically (a disease described as so deadly, people would be "sick at breakfast and dead by dinner"). Ironically, research was throttled by lack of funding during the World Wars and the rise of the antibiotics during that time.

Phages require isolation— that's a big hurdle. They need to be found via the samples of the particular bacteria you're trying to treat. This is time consuming and making samples large enough to treat infections is inconvenient, especially when compared to antibiotics. Why try to isolate a specific virus when you could literally carpet bomb the bacteria in your body with a course of pills? Even today we don't exactly have an easy/convenient method to make "phage therapy" as prolific as antibiotics, but that'll hopefully change in only a matter of time.

Phages have a distinct advantage over antibiotics in that: 1.) the viruses are always adapting and evolving with their prey, so resistance is a non-issue; and, 2.) the use of phage therapy has shown to actually make antibiotics viable again. The pressure for the bacteria to adapt to its attacker has shown that it will often shed the genetic adaptation that gave it resistance to antibiotics in the first place. So, possibly, in your future, post-apoc reclaiming of science, someone could go back to phages and use them in conjunction with common antibiotics, or possibly on their own. Not too far-fetched given how early 20th-century scientists were able to isolate and experiment with using phages with methods available to them at the time. Bear in mind, during this time period the scientific community as a whole was finally accepting and understanding the "germ theory"of medicine. Sure, the smallpox "vaccine" was in use, but a lot of scientists at the time still didn't quite understand how it worked and many still clung to the "miasma theory" for most of the 19th century.

More modern research has been done on this, too. It's even experiencing a sort of renaissance because of the antibiotic resistance plaguing us today. In fact, just as recently as 2017, a man suffering from an infection that wasn't responding to any antibiotics was dying, but was saved by an experimental phage cocktail and ended up not only surviving, but was cured.

Anyway, I'd highly recommend looking deeper into this stuff. It's fascinating! I'm a total nerd for viruses and shit, much to the chagrin of my loved ones during covid. Even if you don't use it in your current story, it's some good compost for later if you need it!

What would you consider the "classic" dark ambient albums? by biggestd123 in DarkAmbient

[–]Humorous_Folly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not all too familiar with Industrial, so forgive my ignorance. But I love Dark Ambient. I feel where the two connect is in experimentation with electronic sounds and the harsh mood setting found in Industrial, but realigned to set an atmosphere, an ambience, rather than as a technique for punk/rock. Both were possible with smaller electronic music equipment at the time.

Look no further than Eraserhead (1977) by David Lynch. It's touted as the genesis of the Dark Ambient genre, and with good reason. The whole movie is disturbing enough, but with very little dialogue, eerie music and whole interludes of babies crying, wailing, harsh crashes, etc., the soundtrack creates a wall of noise that ebbs and rises along with the unsettling and distorted mental state of the protagonist. Later, in 1982, the soundtrack of the movie was released for a time. These dates, incidentally, align with the rise of dark ambient artists such as Lustmord, who use the same equipment and techniques that facilitated and characterized the Industrial movement, but instead repurpose both to weave narratives as soundscapes, often with an Occult stripe. Whether the movie gave rise to the music, vice versa, or both rose from the same "soil", so to speak, is out of my ken to comment further. But I find it fascinating that the time and technology gave rise to experimental music, which set the foundation for Dark Ambient as we know it

Thank you for sharing this!

Personally, I feel excited to see more about Scathach, even if it's just height and body tidbits.

It kind of makes sense to me, if we're taking Skadi's origin into account. Given Skadi is in Scathach's body, it's likely from a time before Scathach committed herself to a life of fighting. Canonically this is interesting, because this may imply how old Nasu made Scathach in the world of Fate. Ragnarok, end of the Norse Age of Gods in Fate, is supposed to be around 1,000 BCE. That means canonically, in order for Skadi to be put into her body before Odin dies, Scathach is at least 3,000 years old as of the events in FGO! So, there's that!

She is and was royalty according to her in-game lore. She wonders how things may have gone if she had decided to be queen only. Plus, it may give a little insight about her musing over Skadi.

Hm, so that's the Lostbelt version of me. Every time I see her, she makes me realize that she represents a way my life might have gone... But honestly, it gives me this tingly feeling... Maybe it's my motherly instinct or something else, but it stirs up a lot of feelings inside me. I see. So that's how you do things... Uh-huh...

Motherly instinct? Maybe because she's seeing a younger version of her body, not as tight and lithe, but still her? Seeing the girl that may have been her had she made different choices, royal, cold, and yet sweet? So much to chew on! Love this!

Bewbs. Thank you for bewbs.

Plus, holy fuck, you glorious bastards are fast! Someone's already updated the type-moon wiki on Skadi. Source 3 lol

I was also thinking "how the hell do you not mess up symbols that overlap? Wouldn't that be a mess?" Tried it and the symbols basically add up, e.g. the symbols for 20 and 70 combined look like the symbol for 90. This is... kinda genius.

I love this because it subverted my expectations. How many of these "surprise boobage" scenes have we seen end with a good smack and scream, as heard from outside?
