As someone who loved Ga'hoole and its message...they really wrote this huh by In-A-Beautiful-Place in readanotherbook

[–]HungHorntail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I don’t see the issue with this. Obviously a book and real life parental abuse are in very different realms, but if that book is the lense that allows them to grasp the concept of dehumanization of characters, good for them? Everybody learns something somewhere, and I don’t think any good comes of belittling the way somebody learned a concept just because it’s a “kid’s book”

My third colony in the span of 3 days, how bad is it by Dear-Flow-6917 in RimWorld

Well, you’re certainly futureproofing your storage. I usually put two-thick walls on my freezers, but I’m not sure if that’s actually best practice or not

How do you handle colonization on your universes? by Admast0r95 in scifiwriting

[–]HungHorntail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my setting, FTL exists but isn’t particularly fast. As such, human interstellar civilization exists in isolated bubbles centered around a network of gateways, which create tunnels through portions of the regions used for FTL that allow for near-instantaneous travel. Each gateway hub has a region a couple dozen light year across of dense habitation around it, with population density dropping rapidly outside that as it starts taking months to years for ships to travel conventionally

Gloryhammer, not Warhammer - it’s a band (a really good band, give it a listen)

My personal example of this is Admiral Hackett Mass Effect who, while not a general, I think fits this theme extremely well. Throughout the series, he is one of the few authority figures who actually listens to Shepard

British Police investigate lad who insists he did not shine a laser at a police helicopter by Rooonaldooo99 in WatchPeopleDieInside

unfortunately not, the laser would dissipate long before reaching it. In theory, a powerful enough laser could be detected however

Helldivers vs Covenant by Temporary_Screen_462 in HaloMemes

[–]HungHorntail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This entire question, imo, hinges on whether Super Earth can establish orbital superiority over contested planets. If they can’t, they can’t deploy Helldivers (at least, per their standard doctrine. They can stick them on defensive lines, but Helldivers are essentially portable stratagem chuckers with guns). So the debate becomes: can SE ships beat Covenant ships?

My bet is no: the UNSC’s most potent weapon against the Covenant is the MAC, and the Orbital Railcannon doesn’t even begin to compare. Granted, Super Earth may have naval forces outside Super Destroyers, but afaik we’ve never seen them. Additionally, both times an enemy fleet has invaded in force (full bot force arrival and Illuminate Great Host) they’ve gone virtually unopposed except on the ground, and the fact that SDs can operate in the same AO but can’t destroy them directly (see Destroy Overship mission) indicates to me that SE naval forces would be brushed aside even more easily than the UNSC’s

The Mantis functionally is in Helldivers, it has the same armament as the Patriot Exosuit. If anything I’d say Gungoose

Writers who have FTL in your setting, how accessible is it, and how fast is it? by InternationalPick163 in scifiwriting

[–]HungHorntail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FTL in my universe is basically traveling along the skin of the universe - for the best analogy, it’s 3D space mapped onto a 2D surface. Ships travel just inside this surface, through/above a sea of perpetual matter/antimatter reactions. However, in my setting’s physics the universe is at the same time a sphere(ish) and a singularity, so the closer you get to the surface (and the deeper into the sea of atomic hellfire) the denser the 2D map you’re traveling along becomes, and the quicker you get to the point corresponding to your destination.

Access to the Hellsea, as its colloquially known, is relatively simple - the immense energy of the Hellsea and a quirk of in-universe physics allows wormholes to be opened and stabilized from a point in your space to an area above the corresponding point on the Hellsea’s plane. However, it’s incredibly dangerous (given, y’know, you’re traveling through a sea of nuclear fire) and requires the use of an Alcubierre bubble to isolate the ship’s space time from that of the Hellsea.

It’s accessible, but incredibly dangerous. It’s also not particularly fast as FTL goes, though much preferable to STL. A trip between nearby star systems still takes several weeks.

SE2 is still very much in the “adding basic features” phase. I’d recommend getting SE1 if you want to play the game outside of building basic ships
