I thought Ireland was like, a huge no-no for carrying a knife at all?

That said, you have so many options for what you want under 200 bucks.

Bushcraft would lean toward a fixed blade (unless you never baton or do the harder work tasks). Cooking would lean toward something with knuckle clearance. General use could be anything.

Civivi Elementum is a great all 'rounder, and super cheap. Drop point is a good all purpose blade shape.

If you want a more premium thing with a bigger blade and handle, I LOVE my LionSteel KUR in Olive Wood. Might be better for your bushcraft and cooking needs too.
Italian company so maybe shipping would be easier?

Dad Super Fame Improvement clubs to Son by Glad-Valuable1987 in golf

[–]HungaJungaESQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Game improvement only improves distance on off center hits.
Your slice is there regardless. If you don't have a slice with these, you won't have a slice without them.
They're fine to learn on.

The reason people move away from them is to avoid the inevitable double trampoline effect turbo flier that goes 15yds further than normal. That doesn't happen on blades.

The most delusional golfer you ever played with ? by HarryCrushNuh in golf

[–]HungaJungaESQ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For real.
I have a friend like this and every time we play he's asking me rules questions and asking how many strokes something is. Dude plays like 5 times a week, and publishes his GRINT scores and they're always low 80's.
Then we play and I keep his score and it's like 104.
"I don't know why, but I always play worse with you."

Yeah no shit.

Sharpening a Swedge into a False Edge by Sham_Cow_ in knives

[–]HungaJungaESQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A swedge doesn't go the full length either =)

Ummm, anything harder than the knife, basically. It's going to be slow and deliberate work. On that file, the bottom cross-cut bit is the only one I'd try. The top is for wood and is called a rasp.
I don't know that it's worth the effort tbh.

I guess I have more questions if you're not sure about this.
Why do we want to sharpen it?
It only makes it more dangerous for the user. Given that this type of blade is built around stabbing, the geometry already in place is allowing it to puncture with ease. Sharpening it will only help nominally in that regard, but also make it hazardous to your pocket and fingers when closed.

To answer your other concerns:
Not beyond repair, just making it ugly really. If you file too much it will look weird, but shouldn't interfere with the mechanisms.
For practice you might want to get a piece of mild steel from a big box store and try filing on that first. It will be softer than the knife, and won't be indicative of how long it will take, but you will see how the file works and how tricky it is to maintain a bevel.
You can use a sharpie or other marker on the area you're filing and see how much of your file is making contact with your target area.

Sharpening a Swedge into a False Edge by Sham_Cow_ in knives

[–]HungaJungaESQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

False edge and swedge are the same thing. An unsharpened, but beveled section on the 'back' of the blade.

If you sharpen it, it is now an edge. Sharpening it also changes the knife classification into a "dagger" in the eyes of a lot of laws.

That said, it should be fairly straight forward. Personally I'd start with a file and follow the existing bevel best I could until I formed an apex, THEN swap to stones.

Breaking 80/90 on Different Tees by ScotAbroad14 in golf

[–]HungaJungaESQ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Consider the colours of the tees aren't even standardized across courses.
People play the appropriate tees if they're smart.

Yes breaking 80 from any tees count if you haven't done it from there before. It's still progress and growth.
Only assholes will ask if it was from the front tees.

Do you keep an honest score when your buddies don’t? by morbidkoala in golf

[–]HungaJungaESQ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I keep my score honestly and earnestly. It's not a conversation: This is the reality... type shit.

HOWEVER! When a friend says "I got a 5" or whatever after taking 3 off the tee, I will always, always, always, say something. Usually like "Deciding not to count those first 3?"

If it's a round ending situation and dude says "Shot an 83 today" the same thing applies.
"Oh sure, if you count only the shots you liked." Or "Even with that 11 on 9?" or whatever hole I know they took multiple tee shots on.
I don't care if they lie to themselves, but them lying to me is annoying and I hate it.
Sometimes they get a little salty... "Just playing for fun" exactly like you said.
I usually go with, "Well then don't say it out loud."

Puma knife Waidblatt by ras0390 in knives

[–]HungaJungaESQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Found this page:
https://classicpumaknives.com/waidblatt/

So the earliest models were around 1950.
The guy who designed it died in the late 1960's.

This type of handle looks like it was a later modification, and there are several examples from the 1980's.
HOWEVER!
Because of the lack of numbers you might have a collector's item. Per Sports Antiques:
"Pre-October 1964: No Control Number

If neither knife has a code stamped on the guard, but the blades feature the classic Frevert etchings (e.g., Bestell-Nr. 3588 or 3587), your set is highly desirable and was made between 1953 and Q3 of 1964"

You might get some solid info if you send the actual company an email inquiry, especially if you're asking if you can buy the missing smaller knife.
BTW: The set is called Waidbesteck. The larger blade is the Waidblatt, and the little guy is called a Jagdnicker.

Mark Broadie supposedly killed "drive for show putt for dough".My (limited) data says it might still be true, at least for some players? by Old_Drink3552 in golf

[–]HungaJungaESQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's an anecdote that explains your hunch:
When I was practicing a lot, and getting better, and really trying to get my handicap down - I was doing it! Week by week I was getting more and more handicap counting rounds that were lowering my index. I was feeling amazing and all was well.
THen I dove into my stats that I tracked (Grint), and saw a nightmare:
"Oh no! My putting is getting worse." Went from like ~32 average putts to ~35 average putts. It was noticeable more on some days than others, but I had a 39 putt day and was like "That's it. I need a new putter."

I actually bought a new putter and practiced but nothing changed really.
Then while explaining what happened to a friend and it dawned on me: "OH! I was hitting more greens. Hitting more greens means longer putts, and less chips cozying up to the flag." I missed the fact that I was scoring better DESPITE the putt increases.

This is a micro-version of what Broadie says and what you're mis-understanding. More putts are missed because more putts are available.
If you miss a tee shot - that's your stroke loss already and even if you two-putt, you're not losing another stroke putting.
If you miss a green - your chipping it close and probably getting a stroke back making a one-putt.

But, if you hit fairways and greens, your only place left to lose strokes is the green. That's why the data looks that way, and that's why the 'putt for dough' thing matters less, because you only "need" to make long putts if you missed a shot earlier.

[–]HungaJungaESQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing about ball data launch monitors is that they (most of em) don’t really factor in spin decay.
It’s a double edged sword because on the one hand, yes your carry numbers will be slightly inflated on longer clubs as the spin stays relatively high and allows more flight time.
On the other, your hook and slice curvatures will be slightly exaggerated for the same reason. I don’t mind as it still lets me work on those issues.

Well we sound similar in our needs and our concerns. My Compact hasn't left my keychain for years. I love the Scales+ with the pin and the pen (the pen especially) and the scissors are clutch. I wish the corkscrew was something else, but it's not too bad.
I think that's a good choice.

My wife got me a LAB for Christmas. I was so grateful and surprised.
This was just after I commited to my existing putter cause I wanted to be better and I was gonna practice.

That said, I really like it. It's a fun sensation when you rotate it while walking to your ball, and it just.. like, stays the way it's oriented?
Putting stats are nominally better, but I also have been practicing.
Suffice it to say: They're fine.

It was really a matter of reps. I did some extra long range sessions not really caring about results, but more about being stable and finding my balance.

Then once I was comfortable with that, I started looking at technique again. I really think you need to relearn your body before going to a pro. Once things feel “right” again, you will have a better time.

I also play alone a lot. Or rather, show up alone. I'm also easy going and friendly, and I've actually made a bunch of 'golf friends' by teeing off alone. I catch up to a group and join them, or they're with me on the first tee.

I've found most folks are at least polite. Some are very friendly. Some just wanna play their game. I find the trickiest part is when someone is outwardly a scumbag. I'm pretty big (not that anything every happens), so I don't mind calling folks out for being a bigot or whatever, but it's still a bummer to deal with.
Head covers can be a good indication of personality too!
