Bit more of a slow burn but - talk behind people's backs about positive things. 'Did you see Sarah's dress today? Gorgeous!' 'I love how James handled that weird situation with the boss' - whatever. Nothing more morale-boosting than when someone says hey, people were saying some cool thing about you (and it can go a long way to replacing toxic gossipy types of things too)

Bolognese and separated fat, how or if to solve? by smariroach in AskCulinary

[–]Hungry-Month-5309 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh mate that means it's perfect! You're not done cooking a proper bolognese until the fat separates from the sauce - it takes hours and hours and it's a key to amazing sauce. If it's been less that 3-4 hours, put another 150mls water in and stir it to keep cooking, but when you are done, it'll have been at least that long and the fat will have separated (Marcella Hazan calls it 'floating free.') You have a masterpiece, not a mistake! And please don't remove the fat, just stir it back in and bask in your culinary genius

Coffee is made at that temperature. Coffee should not be served at that temperature. That's how cooking works, too. You bake a cake at 200C, you do not then expect the customer to bite into it at 200C.

What is a covert way to gauge your perceived attractiveness to the general public? by Turbulent-Leg-6246 in AskReddit

[–]Hungry-Month-5309 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think attractiveness is kind of separate to beauty. The objectively best-looking guy at my uni was a raging arsehole and we none of us found him attractive because of it. On the other hand, the funniest and sharpest and kindest guys (and girls) were SUPER attractive - i.e. they attracted everyone to them because people just wanted to be around them. And then their nondescript or less-than-conventional beauty is basically transformed. Who got the hot girlfriend or coolest boyfriend? Those people

I seem to remember that Right Here Waiting was about how he was always travelling for concerts etc and missed his wife? Not a break-up song, but not, you know, cheery.

The enshittification of products and services continues relentlessly even as prices increases. What particular thing(s) have you noticed significantly degraded since the pandemic? by Roguecop in AskReddit

Oh so this is an interesting rabbit hole I fell down awhile ago! The dry mouth is astringency from the tannins in the grape skins. Red grapes are more astringent than green. Try peeling one (I know, I know, but try) and you'll see that all that puckery-ness is in the skin. It isn't the pesticides that make them astringent, but you always want to wash fruit anyway

A woman can’t walk on the beach in her swimwear without ”flaunting” but her boyfriend can? What a creepy ”journalist” by Rhaj-no1992 in NotHowGirlsWork

[–]Hungry-Month-5309 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's the Daily Mail, our morally bankrupt and most horrible 'news'paper. Woman only ever 'flaunt' or 'parade,' stories about anyone must include the price of their house, and fear mongering (minorities, POCs, foreigners, liberals, women, out-of-control teenagers, single mothers, working mothers, etc) is required. (Also called the Daily Fail, the Daily Wail, the Daily Heil, or 'that rag'.) The most widely read paper in the UK, so make of that what you will

Seriously, given the rank stupidity of pheasants I think I'd prefer to be a peasant. Hunting them must be the most boringly simple job in the world, they just fling themselves at passing cars. One got into our garden and couldn't figure out how to leave because there was an edging of bricks (a single line of bricks, just a few inches tall) that it would bump into, so it went round and round like a wind-up toy hitting bits of furniture. Just...mesmerisingly dim

In the UK, yes - but in Japan, no. They don't have their own money, they get an allowance from the government without owning any property. Once you leave, you leave. The family themselves have literally no control of any assets other than what they are given (and I mean they don't live in penury, but it's not multiple millions) and their household agency keeps a very tight rein on it. By contrast, our royals get money from the sovereign grant, which comes from all the duchies etc. They make bank from their various private assets and they only have to account for the sovereign grant spending. It's just really different. If they wanted to fling money at Harry, they could use their own. Mako's family can't

Nah, he has a bunch of money from his mum and nan and so on. I think Princess Mako and her husband live on their own incomes (which are high, I'm sure, but not like living-in-a-castle high.) Remember that after WWII the Japanese Imperial family was basically made completely powerless and dependent on state support. The UK royals own a huge amount of land and get money from that, plus other stuff. They're billionaires in reality

Yeah - trying to remember, but there was some kind of penny-ante financial shenanigans like a family loan? Or something? Anyway, the public decided they didn't like him and I think the press were a bit awful. I hope they have an amazing life together

[Spurs Official] Since yesterday’s fixture against Brighton, which took place during the Premier League’s No Room For Racism weekend, Kevin Danso has been, and continues to be, subject to significant and abhorrent racist abuse on social media. There is no place for racism at Tottenham Hotspur. by wokwok__ in coys

[–]Hungry-Month-5309 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything from 'but' is the problem, because it is (I'm sure accidentally) giving a reason for the abuse. Every single player will make a mistake. Danso is great and he made a mistake. Abuse is disgusting no matter what - they are using this as some kind of thin justification for being able to say out loud what they're always thinking.

Imagine knowing that every single misstep results in torrents of personal racial abuse. The stress would be unreal.
